The "Death & Return of Superman" is also pretty good, although in the same vein of beign hard like Adventures of Batman & Robin for the Sega Genesis. They went and did all of the Supermen playable, minus Clark with the black suit and metal emblem.

Why does everyone insist that player 2 is Captain Marvel? (That's right, in 1987 when this game came out that was his name) It's just a pallet swap of Superman. Just like Mortal Kombat had pallet swap ninjas to save on memory, player 2 is just that. Captain Marvel has gold boots, wears a white cape (pretend all you want but this game uses grey for player 2), doesn't wear trunks over his tights and has a lightning shaped logo...not diamond shaped like Superman's . You can pretend all you want, it's not Captain Marvel.

I believe it actually came out in 1988, for the 50th anniversary of Superman. (Kinda like how the cartoon that aired on CBS exclusively for 1 season did. Note: if you want to see the cartoon, you can probably find it on eBay I assume, but I know for a fact it's on DVD Netflix.)

Funny thing about that: Back then you could get the rights to Superman, and that was it: Just Superman. If you wanted to have more characters, like Lex Luthor, you had to pay more money for the rights of those separate characters. Taito only had money for Superman, that's why every bad guy in the game is some made up guy. Even player 2, which everyone thinks is Shazam/Captain Marvel, is not. Taito just made up some guy (that just so happens to have the same color scheme of Shazam/Captain Marvel), and called it a day. Which is why player two is just "Superman with a color swap" (I mean, Shazam doesn't have heat vision and "Player Two" does, for example)

Perhaps Superman right alone was pretty expensive but Taito decided to jump over the shark, knowing that games based on source material would sell like hotcakes. Wasn't aware that the devs had to pay for individual characters instead of the whole franchise. Wondering if that's the same case for Konami when they were making TMNT games.

Probably due to sprite limitations. Making a palette swap didn't require a fully animated alternate sprite set for player two. Thus freeing up more room for enemy sprites/props/etc. That's why most 2 player games of the era just make player two a recolor.

In the Manga/Anime "My Hero Academia" one of the lead characters, All Might, is able to "throw" huge gusts of wind to knock around the villains just by throwing punches at the air. His protégé, Deku, does something similar by using his finger flicks to create concentrated "bolts of air." Maybe Superman was using a similar technique? Something with a little more force and control than just using his super breath.

I was playing this ~25 years ago at a bowling alley. I was stupid, and a kid, and my sweatpants didn't have any pockets so I stuck all of my remaining quarters in my mouth. While playing, I must've gotten excited or whatever and I swallowed one of the quarters. I could feel the ribbed edge all the way down my esophagus. To my knowledge, I never pooped that sucker out either. That reminds me as well of when I was 5 and at kindergarten. You would need to use MAME++ 0.119. Keep in mind there is a chance of desync when playing online, but if you are creating a save state every stage, you shouldn't lose your progress. There are also other choices like MAMEHub and Retroarch, but I don't like them as much.

merenguin It's supposedly Captain Marvel, but the game itself doesn't actually say that, as far as I know. From the pictures I've seen of Captain Marvel, he has a lightning bolt logo on his chest. On the high score screen in this game, you can see the red player has the traditional Superman logo on his chest. It's possible it's not supposed to be a specific character and it's just a generic player 2.
