I saw ‘Superman - The Movie’ on its release in 1978. It had a huge effect on the movie audience, adults cheering like kids at the Saturday morning cinema. We knew we were seeing something special.

I was 7 when this came out. I remember it absolutely rivaled Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark in terms of excitement, anticipation and the audience interaction. Interesting that all of these movies had the same music composer. It was such an amazing experience.

I haven't seen Christopher Reeve's Superman in decades, so thanks for this. It just reinforces how this is The Best Superman Of All Time. ( I've seen them all.) Superman flying over the Manhattan skyline with the Twin towers in the background. Superman saying "It was nothing, have a nice day!" after saving the village by capping the volcano. Lois Lane drawing the glasses and hat/coat on the Daily Planet photo of Superman that Jimmy Olsen took. Classic and timeless right down to the costume. (No padding needed. 😁) Even in real life he was a Great Super Man! R.I.P. (Still sorely missed...)

As much as I love the Raimi Spider-Man trilogy, they borrowed heavily from these first 3 films. The giving up their powers for love, and battling their dark side with the symbiote suit. It was a love letter to these movies, I think.

The three best bits from the original superman films (not IV, I’ve no idea what happens, I’d gone by then) The scene where Clarke gets mad having been found out he really is supermen having put his hand into flames, the point where he stops denying it. The scene where superman returns having looked to have run away in Superman II where the music builds and the newspapers blow away and the spirit of superman returns, until he’s stood on the flagpole outside the high rise office and says, ‘you care to step outside?’ The scene where he looks to have succumbed and knelt before Zod, only to crush his hand and then throw him down the chasm.
