The idea of a Metropolis punk scene themed after Bizarro is a stroke of genius for something such a quick gag (you could easily make a full miniseries about Bizarro punkrockers). Gerber really was on another level. Keep up the good work!

Just when you thought Steve Gerber couldnt get any weirder. He is one of those writers that always manages to suprise you with his imagination. Also Gene Colan artwork always work well with Steve's scripts. They were quite the odd Dynamic Duo.

@@Alex-yx5qh No. Steve Gerber died on 2008. He was never arrested. Maybe you are confusing him with Samurai X mangaka.

The "Woman with an exploding head" trope(?) is also used at the end of Defenders 32, when Ruby Thursday detonates her cybernetic dome to take out the team. Actually, Gerber's depiction of women (from strong iconic leads like Valkyrie and Moon Dragon to moral pillars like Red Guardian, and down to villainous caricatures such as Virago in Sub-Mariner) was always well ahead of the 1970s curve. Maybe rates it's own episode?

PHANTOM ZONE is some wild comics, even for Gerber. A weird Dante's Inferno riff, plus Bizarro-punk

That Gerber/Veitch coda in DC Comics Presents was really disturbing. Not only does Superman basically fail, but it ends with destruction raining on Metropolis and the antagonist just shrugging off Superman and leaving. It was also about the last pre-Crisis story to be published, so the whole universe was getting rebooted immediately. This was the note Earth-One Supes went out on.

You always have really interesting takes, no matter the subject. Well done + thank-you SBP. It’s genuinely always a pleasure to see whatever new work you present. One day (hopefully soon 🤞) I will donate/pay towards this channel. Your work deserves to be recognised + rewarded. I really hope you do manage to achieve your stated long term goals. Excellent stuff as always. I look forwards to whatever you bring next...

This was fantastic! Thank you! A few (simple?) thoughts -- ·I really like those "ten minutes into the future..." lines you put into the beginning of each episode and I make sure to read them. I dunno, they're just cool. ·I appreciate Metropolis as a setting even more now that I know that canonically it had a thriving punk scene. Wendy Y. Bother would (or would not) approve of my approval, and that's frikkin rad. ·In a bit I'm going to scrounge up some 3D glasses (I have a lot, long story) and check out the red/cyan skeletal figure at timestamp 8:31. It's probably pretty awesome. Thanks again, and as usual, I really appreciate you and the work you put into these! Edit: corrected timestamp

Superman is my favorite character and PHANTOM ZONE is one of my all-time favorite Superman stories specifically because of how weird it is! I think Gerber managed to strike a balance of doing something quirky and unconventional while still "feeling right", for lack of a better description. The moody and atmospheric art by Colan and DeZuniga helps.

Perfect story to represent the craziness of pre crisis DC. Gerber was such a talent it’s too bad Marvel kept screwing him over

More people need to read this story. However, as an "art" guy, I always wondered why Colan didn't draw Charlie's emblem/family crest as it had appeared in the original tale. That checkerboard rectangle was an odd choice.

Gerber had often cited Superman as his favorite comics character, which i always thought was odd for someone of Gerber's interests. I mean, i do believe in the idea that people tend to imprint on the stuff they loved when they were 12, but Gerber being a diehard Superman fan might be one of the weirder things about him, all things considered.

Does the prelude read better before or after the mini-series? Is it written as something you read right before jumping into it, or does it open after the first story ended with Superman being like "Gee, I wonder how all this stuff I just went through started" and a big flashback popping up?
@StrangeBrainParts Жыл бұрын
I think it's best to read the prelude after the miniseries. But, honestly, I don't think it matters one way or the other.
