The idea of a Metropolis punk scene themed after Bizarro is a stroke of genius for something such a quick gag (you could easily make a full miniseries about Bizarro punkrockers). Gerber really was on another level. Keep up the good work!

Just when you thought Steve Gerber couldnt get any weirder. He is one of those writers that always manages to suprise you with his imagination. Also Gene Colan artwork always work well with Steve's scripts. They were quite the odd Dynamic Duo.

The "Woman with an exploding head" trope(?) is also used at the end of Defenders 32, when Ruby Thursday detonates her cybernetic dome to take out the team. Actually, Gerber's depiction of women (from strong iconic leads like Valkyrie and Moon Dragon to moral pillars like Red Guardian, and down to villainous caricatures such as Virago in Sub-Mariner) was always well ahead of the 1970s curve. Maybe rates it's own episode?

That Gerber/Veitch coda in DC Comics Presents was really disturbing. Not only does Superman basically fail, but it ends with destruction raining on Metropolis and the antagonist just shrugging off Superman and leaving. It was also about the last pre-Crisis story to be published, so the whole universe was getting rebooted immediately. This was the note Earth-One Supes went out on.

Superman is my favorite character and PHANTOM ZONE is one of my all-time favorite Superman stories specifically because of how weird it is! I think Gerber managed to strike a balance of doing something quirky and unconventional while still "feeling right", for lack of a better description. The moody and atmospheric art by Colan and DeZuniga helps.

More people need to read this story. However, as an "art" guy, I always wondered why Colan didn't draw Charlie's emblem/family crest as it had appeared in the original tale. That checkerboard rectangle was an odd choice.

Gerber had often cited Superman as his favorite comics character, which i always thought was odd for someone of Gerber's interests. I mean, i do believe in the idea that people tend to imprint on the stuff they loved when they were 12, but Gerber being a diehard Superman fan might be one of the weirder things about him, all things considered.

Does the prelude read better before or after the mini-series? Is it written as something you read right before jumping into it, or does it open after the first story ended with Superman being like "Gee, I wonder how all this stuff I just went through started" and a big flashback popping up?

I think it's best to read the prelude after the miniseries. But, honestly, I don't think it matters one way or the other.
