David Corenswet, the new Superman Actor, was the one who convince James Gunn to add the trunks back because he believe Superman despite being an OP alien he wants to not be scary looking for the people or even children and the trunks will make him look goofy but at the same time a friendly superhero. Because of that, it sold me. This is the start of DCU so they added the other heroes but won't be much in screentime but just to introduce them but won't be pull the focus away to Superman.

I used to think like that but they can be small cameos or in for a bit. Gunn is making a point that superheroes are active and not an origin story which makes a whole lot of people happy.
