The defining soundtrack... Because, it's not a soundtrack - it's the sound of hopes and dreams of billions of kids around the world - who saw a man can fly! This is also, the defining moment - that tells you..... This movie WILL make history... And looks at us know! We stare at this TO DATE! Richard Donner !

But let's not forget the lead-in to this epic intro, which is the kid-narrator opening that copy of Action Comics and declaring, "[i]n the decade of the 1930s, even the great city of Metropolis was not spared the ravages of the world-wide depression. In the times of fear and confusion, the job of informing the public was the responsibility of the Daily Planet, a great metropolitan newspaper, whose reputation for clarity and truth had become a symbol of hope for the city of Metropolis."

Everyone complaining about the length of the opening title have missed the point entirely. The opening scene of the movie is set on Krypton. The lengthy credit sequence is travelling through space to show how far Krypton is from Earth!

Fantastic opening credits, that alone is worth the ticket price, Richard Donner is movie making god, 36 years later and hollywood still can't get a movie to equal it.

Its not that they "can't", the bigwigs that own Hollywood are too cheap and lazy to spend money and hire people who can make a film that can rival this one. They're more concerned about how much money they'll make off of each film that comes out now. With how some films have been made on crowdfunding sites, I can thankfully see them finally dismantling Hollywood and allowing anyone to make a good movie, just as long as they have a good enough budget, writers, cast, and story. I'll admit that there are some indie films that look like someone simply shot with a video camera, but there are also a handful of good ones as well. At least with the audience funding it, they're the ones that decide if a film gets off the drawing board or not, which makes them feel like their voices are being heard (compared to an oppressive film establishment that doesn't care about them at all).
@Justdisco2
@Justdisco2 9 жыл бұрын
DrDK144 yeah, i understand what your saying, studio executives and producers are always looking at the bottom line, and they have the benefit of CGI to keep the cost down, back in the day in the 70's and 80s, a lot of producers were in it for artistic merit as well as making a few bob, i could never understand to this day why the Salkinds wanted both movies made simultaneously ? The salkinds produced superman 1 & 2 on a negative pick up deal, that meant fronting all the costs, and warner would write them a cheque on the strength of the movie with a test audience, it was a hell of a risk, lets see a producer nowadays take a risk like that, The Salkinds were unfair to Richard Donner, why make a movie like that, why not just make the first one and see what happens, the film would have come in on budjet and on time, instead Donner got the brunt of there fustrations and they caused real problems on set, thanks to Richard Donner and the departed Christopher Reeve and rest of the cast the first film became a masterpiece, and the second was excellent, thats the Donner version of course,
@trans8010
@trans8010 9 жыл бұрын
Dave Shields the Salkinds never thought the budget would balloon as much as it did. They thought doing a Superman film that would rival 2001 or Planet of the Apes in terms of quality could be made for peanuts. Theu had a strict budget of like 3 or 4 million dollars. Yet they soon learned that the production was damned from the start. The original shooting location was near Rome. Sets were being built, money was being spent, then Marlon Brando told producers that thanks to his previous film "Last Tango in Paris" he had an arrest warrant against him there and would have to shoot elsewhere. Since Marlon's casting was what sold the film to other investors and really got the ball rolling, and he was being paid a lot of money to do it, they had to abandon the Rome sets and as a result lost a hell of a lot of money. They then had to find a large enough Soundstage and that meant Pinewood, which of course was expensive. During the course of shooting, the effects shots were going nowhere and they invented a device to rig Reeve to look like he was flying. This new rig Donner had to fight tooth and nail for, because the Salkinds would not fund it initially, they thought shooting the flying sequences meant that all they had to do was shoot him on a board like George Reeves. That of course wouldn't work and eventually the Salkinds caved adding more to the budget. They simply had no idea as to what goes into the production of a large scale film, and thought if they paid the big time actors enough to get their commitment everything would fall into place. They put all of their eggs in one basket as a result and took their frustrations out on Donner when things started spiraling out of their control.

I was 25 when Superman the Movie came out. I didn't expect much. Seated squarely in my chair, the opening credits blew me away. The transition from a child reading the original Superman comic to a B&W depiction of the Daily Planet, then the John Williams' score lifting to the full motif, well, caused unexpected tears to roll down my cheeks and hoped no one would notice. I was once one of those kids running around their backyard with a red towel tucked under his shirt. I had a neighbor, Chuck, who I met and was even more into Superman than myself. He was actually reading comic books! He lent them to me... upon the condition that I revert to Batman. He was able to nail Christopher Reeves with such accuracy as both Superman and Clark Kent, that I had to relent. I became Batman. And the game continued. He was Superman, I was Batman. The ONLY time we fought physically, I lost. I'd never lost a physical contest like this before, so I wept. Chuck was a great pal. He consoled me and confessed that my knuckles to his skull almost turned the contest. If not for Chuck, I don't think I would have gotten as deep into comic books as I would. I'm fully supportive of "Man of Steel" and the new Hans Zimmer soundtrack. It is wildly divergent from the Donner film. It's a total reinterpretation, and the end effect is awesome. It took some time to adjust, but I did. Nothing can "replace" the John Williams' soundtrack, but if you want to go in a totally different direction, Zimmer is the guy to turn to. They did and he earned his salary. Whether diverging radically from the Donner film(s) was a wise decision is something for another discussion. I liked "Superman Returns" and I liked "MOS." They were both serious efforts to bring Superman to the screen. The music for both films was outstanding.

Awesome story, Odinson. Thanks for sharing! I, of course, don't want to see them just trying to imitate the Chris Reeve films forever only either. However, I did think that Superman Returns was a valiant effort to soft-reboot the franchise; and could have worked had it gotten a sequel or two. I was impressed with Man of Steel upon first viewing too. (Saw it opening night!) But, in retrospect, I think the film's much more a product of the late 00's early 2010's than a lot of people realize. The Marvelisims ("He's kind of hot"), the New 52/DCEU tasteless dark tone, and the dull color grading and uniconic music just sort of lull the film into obscurity, IMHO. I bought the steelbook Blu-ray when it first came out - but honestly, I've probably only watched it twice, if that, since... Just haven't cared to. The Chris Reeve films (and to a lesser extent, Lois & Clark and even Superfriends) IMHO are much better, more faithful adaptations of the greatest Superhero. Hopefully, in a few years time - and with a new direction again, DC & Warners can make something as iconic as the original 1978 film again! (Here's hoping!)

@mattkylie6723
@mattkylie6723 9 жыл бұрын
aidsbrigade i love Superman, everything from the early animations to Smallville, but speaking from a "hard core" Superman fan perspective!!! lol where do you want me to start!!! the dynamics of this universe where changed to suit otherwise poorly equipt Man of Steel, so much so that there was a need to fulfill an otherwise pointless aspect in changing his very nature and character, which originaly was more or less perfect, based on his origins & character, hence the saying (why fix something if it's not already broken) there was stupid idea to make Superman slightly darker than he originally was based on the success of the Chris Nolan Batman trilogy!! but what many forgot is that this has and was considered many times before in the past, but truth is Superman isn't dark and never was, yet the world around him maybe so, but this dosen't and hasn't the power to dilute him as a person or character, ... and Man of Steel allowed this which demonstrated a far weaker Superman who would or could adopt our ways which would make him no greater than us based apon that!!! Superman is not Batman!!! and therefore has different approach on the world as titled by DC comics (earth's greatest protector) now he can't very well be this unless of course he's immune to humanitarian faults i.e theft and murder which he expresses in the movie!! secondly the movie was badly cast, Henry Cavil is no Superman!!!!! in fact he's a very average actor with little if no big experience based on big part's, this by no means the least possibly the biggest part he'll ever play!! and he played it very poorly!!! the only realistic role given and played correctly was (Fishburne) Perry White, my opinion sits with 70% of the Superman fanbse which labelled the movie overall s..t!! great action movie 10/10 but Superman movie ...NEVER!!! there was more emotion in one episode of Smallville than this entire movie!! i was young enough to remember leaving the cinema after watching Chris Reeve as Superman and even the John Williams soundtrack left you with upbeat feeling inside, unlike the very lacking Hans Zimmer score which altogether sounded like Batman again!!! ...together with many i firmly believe this was quick money spinner, but i assure you the sequel will certainly place a number of nails in Superman's coffin lid, if it's not sadly a lost cause already,

After watching "Man of Steel", I had to come here and listen to this... again.... There will never be another, better theme for Superman. This screams SUPERMAN! Just love it.

I just think the music is so powerful and heroic, it stirs your emotions. If you ever hear the music by itself, the way it begins is beautiful. At first you only hear a couple of notes, you think "What was that?" A couple of more notes, now you KNOW something is coming towards you. By the time the you hear the trumpets, there is a moment when,just for a second, you feel the same joy you felt as a child. In that one moment, Superman is real. Maybe I'm a romantic, but that's what it feels like.

This opening sequence just blew everyone away! These titles along with John Williams' wonderful music took the audience's breath away. No one had ever seen titles like this before. It seems to me that, at the time, all the reviewers had favorable comments about the titles.

This is the first movie I ever watched in my life and the first time I was ever taken to a movie theater (my aunt took me when I was just a kid). I remember thinking, wow he is really flying! that movie made me wanna fly, but I knew I couldn't, lol. Many years later my fond child wish became reality as I've had many lucid dreams of flying just like Superman... (yes Christopher reeve, for me is the real Superman)

This is still one of the longest opening credit sequences I'm aware of. I think this is the rare case however, where the film actually benefits from it. It helps give it the big, powerful, epic quality that it requires.

I saw Superman in 78 and I assurre you it was more than just another movie. It was quite remarkable for many reasons. No matter what your age you were inspired and captivated by it as it presented a comic book with with the quality and length of an epic film. Quite unique and an inspiration that had yet to be topped.

John Williams' scores for his 1970s-80s films are the definitive reason why he is my all-time personal favorite music composer. Seriously, just listen to one of the scores to one of his early movies, like 'Star Wars', 'Superman', or 'Indiana Jones', and you'll see why. ;)

When you hear the opening 30 seconds of this Intro, it really sucks you in and the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, it's so powerful, Awsome score by John williams, And what can i say about Richard Donner, The man is a born winner, certainly my favourite director, He knows how to pull at your heart strings and what it takes to put a film together, check the classic's he's made The Omen,Superman,The Goonies,Lethal weapon,

When I was a small kid growing up I did'nt really get into Superman until 1978 when that movie came out. It was from there I got hooked into it. It's a timelss classic that I will never forget. Christopher Reeve not only made us believe a man could fly but he also show us that he had the heart of Superman. He will always be the Superman that I will remember.

Thanks to Chris, Margot and John Williams for getting everything right. I remember that they promoted it by saying that you will believe a man can fly. I would amend it to say there was a time when we could believe in heroes. And a special thanks to Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. They deserve all the credit.

Christopher Reeve WAS Superman! To this day he still stands as the greatest embodiment of that character. This credit sequence is also one of the greatest ever made. John Williams score and the graphics are incredible..even now! I remember seeing this in the theater as a kid being just blown away by it. The sound has since been remixed. Still nice. RIP Chris.

I remember seeing this in the theater..and when the Superman "S" emblem came "flyng" across the screen and the entire room shaking with the sound. It was awesome. I so agree with Marcusx1980's comments. There can be only ONE Superman, and it is and was and always be Christopher Reeve.

Just watched the Blu-Ray version yesterday! Whenever I want to feel like a kid again, I watch this movie. Yeah, its old, but it was the best movie from the 70's I think. My favorite when I was a kid. The effects still get me everytime I see them, especially the Krypton scenes.

The full intro with young girl reading from the comic book and then the full credits is just so amazing. This films reminds me of the Xmas' of the past as this film for many years was prime time viewing in the UK over the Xmas period.

I was a kid when this came out and I saw it in the cinema. It's hard to get over the feeling the titles elicited, they captured everything about the character in this opening sequence. Superman Returns tried too, but rushed it.
