I made the character model for Optimus Prime vs The Hulk, and I had a joke in there about the cube and Sam Witwicky, so I drew the Bay version... but then I had too much trouble drawing the head. I couldn't make it look right. So to save time I just drew the original head instead.

Honestly I don't get the praise for your animation. It's as stiff and lifeless and ever. I'm trying my best not to hate here but I've been watching you since 2012 and you've never evolved to a more dynamic animation style. Instead, praise like this might give you the impression that the more dynamically you can move one frame of a puppet, the better you'll get at animation.

What they're praising is the complex transformations, the flashy particle effects, and the fight choreography. Not the normal talking character bits, which I agree are stiff. But in defense of my character animation, if you go back to 2012 and watch videos like Star Wars Reenacted by Ponies, the characters were wobbly, constantly in motion. I thought it would make them appear more alive to have them always moving, but in hindsight it looks bizarre. Over time I made them stay still, moving to slightly different poses as they speak. You're right that it's stiff, but it looks much better than it used to. I still make sure to add anticipation and follow-through; the basics of any animation. And sure, I could draw a front view and side view of each character, add in tedious mind-numbing frame-by-frame animation to make it look more artsy, but then I'd only be uploading every 3 months. And the truth is, I'm terrible at drawing. I'm awful at frame-by-frame animation. But that's okay, because people don't watch my content for the visuals, they watch it for the comedy. The goofy puns, the silly jokes. My intent from the very beginning when I started back in 2004 was never to blow people's minds with compelling visuals, it was to share a laugh. The thing I'd really like to improve is facial expressions, as it would help dramatically with the comedy. If you have any tips, I'm happy to hear it. Getting faces to look good is hard.

@@jjkmovies What I personally think is very important to not only an animation's humor but to the entire medium in general is body language and facial expressions. Anyone can tell you that the joke in this video could have been way funnier if Superman expressed his determination up to the punchline, or his surprise up to the end. Instead we get his bland tiny mouth and eyebrows. And I get what you mean by trying to convey a joke through minimalistic animation, but trust me that there is a limit here! Superman body parts didn't even seem to flinch when Optimus punched him, and we didn't even get to see Lex's lifeless body's reaction to being grabbed by Optimus. Anyways any artist would tell you to just draw more. Draw characters from cartoons you like, and if you're feeling ambitious practice drawing real people for a bit. What some people don't get is learning to animate before learning to draw is like learning to run before you can walk.

For this specific animation, I didn't want Superman to be very expressive at the end- that was on purpose. The joke is him being causal, like, _"Oh. That was super easy. Huh. I'm an idiot for not thinking of that... Well this is awkward."_ An overly expressive face wouldn't make sense there. As for Lex Luthor, in the script stage I had a shot inside a room of LexCorp where he's monologuing about his evil plan before a massive metal fist smashes through the window and he screams. But I wrote it out, because I wanted the punchline to be an underwhelming anti-joke. That's the whole point- the music cuts out, there's an awkward atmosphere, Prime grabs Lex and hands him over. Simple, with no distractions to alter the awkward tone. It works. I didn't want Lex yelling to break that awkward silence, and since his arms and legs are surrounded by a giant metal hand, there's no part of his body that could move aside from his head. So I left him alone. And I found it to be funnier that way. Our disagreement on those two points comes down to direction; I'm happy with the way I did those specific scenes. The stiffness I'm worried about are on normal dialogue scenes: At the start of each new sentence, I'll have a character shift to a new pose. They'll lean back a bit, then maybe lean forward sightly. It's formulaic, a bit predictable, and their faces typically stay the same the whole time. That's the place I want to improve. More recently I've had characters point, raise fists, or do things to be more lively and dynamic. Maybe I should draw multiple eye shapes for each character. As for Superman's reaction to getting punched, I'll point to you the scene in Superman Returns where he gets shot in the eye without even blinking.
