Supermarket Commercial Montage

Here's a batch of supermarket commercials, dating between 1979 and 1985 and mostly consisting of New York and Los Angeles area chains. Lotsa good stuff here, and I'll refrain from my usual annoying patter so you can be surprised - a full writeup will be coming on madubs.com/blog

Vons and Ralphs have since become part of Albertsons and Kroger respectively (which are the dominant two supermarket chains), and both of them continue to do very well in Southern California.

James Karen is the Pathmark Guy - he was in movies such as Poltergeist and China Syndrome. Pathmark was one of the first stores to have units open TWENTY-four hours a day. Helvetica is the font that Pathmark and most other chains were using. Also, I swear that when A&P decided to redo the Pathmark look, they looked at all the old commercials and ads. The new "Sav-A-Center" store design has elements that are directly lifted from 80s Pathmark.

Wow.. 😊 Superbly awesome, as well as really amazing, too. 😊 Seeing commercials like these on KZbin is really neat, as well as highly inspiring. Plus, they can create feelings of nostalgia in those who saw these commercials when they aired for the first time on TV too. 😊👍

Things I've noticed. That has got to be the same woman who still does the voiceovers for the Shoprite commercials. Hey that's Wayne Knight in that Waldbaum's Commercial

Ahhh, eggs at 59 cents. Pathmark opened 24 hours? In the 80's? Even with Von's, 6-Midnight? And speaking of Pathmark, exactly who is the spokesperson? Wow, these crazy offers were awesome back then. Now... well... What is that font they arrange those prices in? Nearly all of these 80's supermarket commercials have that font.

The A&P ad appears to come from WABC-TV, as the voice heard announcing from 1:16-1:29 was staffer Tedd Lawrence.

Ralph’s, Alpha Beta, Vons, that was typical So Cal back then, only 2 out of 3 are here now. only been to a safeway store once, then Lucky’s, oh so cal.

$1.09 for a two liter of soda before 1985? Outrageous, considering the wages. People are complaining about food prices today but I don’t think they are comparatively outrageous
