@@randall-king You're right - the extra late show had a less formal "Big Time" vibe than he could capture competing against Leno at 11:30. But he had the advantage of working out of a real street level old theater that was a legend in itself, and he got the neighbors, tourists, and local color on the show, and was able to pull off all kinds of physical stunts and mayhem on Broadway and 53rd. I actually expected him to be more conventional when he made the transition, but no question the CBS show remained 100% saturated with classic Letterman style.

@@kikovazquez7277 I agree with you. I think it gave the show longevity. Had he continued to do the same things in the same environment, I don’t think it would’ve lasted as long as it did. That said, I prefer the Late Night format on NBC to the Late Show on CBS. It’s more fun to watch, at least for me.

Letterman seemed to become more corporate on CBS. While on NBC, he pretty much told us that he would have nothing to do with upper level management...

Agreed. The studio and audience became bigger (along with the band) and I think the intimacy that was there at 12:30 disappeared when he came on an hour earlier.

The CBS show was the show he'd been making fun of at NBC (morning and late night versions). I didn't realize that until ... actually not that long ago. Probably since getting my Masters in Letterman by attending Donz U.

Thanks for posting all of these. I was ten when the NBC show came on and shortly there after we got a VCR. I taped the show every night and watched it the next day as soon as I got home from school. I spent my high school and college years pretty well obsessed with this show. The level of comedy that was shown during these years has never been match in any form of media. It’s proven when you watch these clips now and they are still as fresh as when aired (and in some cases are even funnier with age). It really means a lot to see these especially right now. It brings me back to some really wonderful days that were truly carefree. Again, thank you for this.

Eat Me Dates was definitely one of the most memorable Supermarket Finds on the show. And while Jerry Vale's version of the theme was good, nothing topped Tom Jones' version. A mind blower! Totally tore the house down.

I disagree. I find the Tom Jones version the most generic and boring one. Jonh Denver did a much better one than Tom Jones for example. But this one from this vid is by far the best and haunting one

Thanks for all of these postings, Don. I used to tape Letterman on VHS back in the 80s and I would make Xmas compilation tapes for my family and friends and I included this Eat Me Date bit on one of them. I see now just how much better he was on NBC, before he moved to CBS. BTW I was in the studio audience when Madonna made her infamous appearance on his show in 1994.

@@davebartosh5 yeah the format was done 10 years ago. The self-deprication "humor" bit they all do was stale 20 years ago. Part of the fun was staying up late to watch it. I was thinking this morning (yes, I have no life). I wonder if some Supermarket finds etc were built especially around whether someone was dropping in for a musical spot. Say John Denver. He was avail for an appearance, and they could parody "Rocky Mountain High" with "Supermarket Finds" and off they went. So they built a complete comedy segment around a celebrity appearance. It's interesting to think about... to me I guess. lol.
