We Malaysian goes to the wet markets for fresh vegetables and Meat, not to the supermarket.. much cheaper then in Mall unless we don't get it, in the wet market then we go to the supermarkets..

I noticed you had a poll for what noodles to have....Every time I go back to KL I have to visit Restoran Ah Hwa in Petaling Jaya just for the Hokkien Mee and nothing else.....definitely not cup-a-noodles sis. If you're going to Malaysia get the real deal and not from Jalan Alor please (some will hate me all you will but Malaysians will know) Do you have a local to guide you with some of these? I have cousins who might take you to some hidden gems especially good Malay and Indian places.

Honestly, personally i think, Village grocer is kinda a bit on the high side because they tend to carry imported stuff. The mid-range supermarkets are like Aeon, Giant.. They have more local items and are generally cheaper. That's my opinion anyway..

The bath shower gel is big because we Malaysian like to take a shower more compared to the western people, hence the big bottle.

We don't usually go to Village Grocer because they're expensive, unless you really want to look for imported stuff. Maybe you can try Lotus's, Giant, Mydin etc.. As for the Milk, we do have some local brands and one of them is Farm Fresh. I think I saw them in the fridge.

Best fresh milk is Farm Fresh brand. It is really fresh from farm and not UHT type. Do try it. Biggest difference is when use it for baking bread.. farm fresh stands out from the rest!

I suggest, if you have wild mind, kindly bring your shopping bag to wet market for veggies and fresh seafood (in early morning). You can bargain, and can make comparison between selllers. Just the place, perhaps, humid, hot, smelly and crowded...

Just like in the UK where you have different tiers of supermarkets ranging from ASDAs to M&S to Saintsburies etc. Village Grocer is one of the higher end ones. You can get cheaper local alternatives from Lotus(previously Tesco), Mydin or Aeon supermarkets. Btw, Alchohol is expensive in Malaysia due to tax.

Waitrose is the high end supermarket in the UK, followed by M & S, Sainsbury's, Tesco, Morrisons, ASDA ..cheaper options German supermarkets; Aldi, Lidl, and cheapest ones' Iceland, Farmfoods, Poundshops, etc. There are other boutique supermarkets in posh areas.

Malaysian brand milk is farm fresh...the freshest of all since the farm is just 200km away from KL in Pahang

Village Grocer & Ben's Grocer are premium-priced, specialist grocers; they are usually found in richer neighborhoods. For standard stuff, better deals can be found at Lotus, Giant & Aeon. Isn't it uppity you could only find Oz milk at Village? Malaysian dairies are everywhere, even at 7-11!

Grocers mart sells them higher price compare to other supermarkets...ie: AEON, then to the cheapest Giants...But there are certain food you won't get them unless you are at Grocers...that sells mostly Aussie products more.

Village Grocer, in no bad intention, is expensive. Thats why u can hardly find Village Grocer anywhere else. It is located in the high end area of living. To really understand and appreciate Malaysian grocery shopping like 80% malaysians did is to go to where malaysians normaly do.. supermarket that u can find almost everywhere major in Malaysia.. like Giant, Tesco or Lotus, Econsave or 99 Speedmart for smaller version of marts. U wud get more local varieties and for almost all items u wud get super duper less than for example Village Grocer.

VG is well known the high-end supermarket. If you go to Aeon, Mydin, Giant or Lotus a cup of noodle just cost 1.50-1.80 ringgit. But if you tend to look imported brand and YES VG is recommended.

As for the veges, you have to look for whether it is organic, imported or local. Usually broccoli costs around RM3.

1. U chose the most expensive supermarket chain in Malaysia. 2. U pick the imported item (which most only available in this supermarket chain). Can opt for local brand instead 3. Most milk is produced locally. Fun facts the one u pick is Made in Malaysia. Goodday is malaysian company. Nextime try lotuss or giant.

Hi skye, perhaps you can check out other grocery brands as well. Based on my experience i can categorised Malaysia’s / KL groceries into these: High end: Village Grocer Aeon Jaya Grocer Cold Storage Mid range: Aeon Big (This was formerly known as carrefour) Lotus (this was formerly known as tesco) Low end: NSK (this is as far i know the cheapest supermarket I’ve been to) Mydin

Village Grocer is more on the high end and its more to foreigner market, for us local we go for Lotus / Tesco and Giant.

Most major beers are brewed in Malaysia. Heineken Malaysia brews Tiger Beer, Heineken & Guinness in their local factory while Carlsberg Malaysia factory brew Carlsberg, Royal Stout and other brews under their label locally. The price are high due to 'Sin Tax' imposed on tobacco and alcoholic products.

Some cereals or other products are imported hence the high price. But they also have the same brand that's locally made (or around SE) thats more reasonably priced. I often found this for brands like Kellogg's, Campbell, Nestle

they have the largest factories in malaysia for Clarksburg in petaling jaya i used to drive by . its actually on the federal highway . they produce it in malaysia. and malaysia consumes the largest quantities in the world due to the large tourism .

I don't know how much Sake (Japanese rice wine) costs in the UK but it's crazy expensive in Australia, same with Shochu (Korean wine) because of the duties levied. Whenever I go back to Malaysia I grab as much Sake and Shochu as I can from specialty shops in KL and they are easily quarter the price if not less than here in Australia. Edit: To drink in KL with family and friends cos I won't be drinking that overpriced stuff when I am back in Oz haha

Village Grocer is a premium supermarket that carries a lot of imported items. Most locals shop at regular supermarkets / hypermarkets such as Aeon, Giant, Mydin or Lotus. You get more variety of products at much lower prices. Those broccolis that you picked up are from Australia and they are much higher cost. You can get much cheaper broccolis that are from China at a fraction of the costs.

Hi🙋Since you guys in KL ,let's go Sunway Lagoon Fun Park or Cameron Highland , there are some fresh strawberries let's customer to grab itself, & Nice view as well👍 Another recommend place will be call Sekinchan, a place which is famous on rice & seafood👍 local Chinese restaurant have a lot of famous dishes to try😄

Village Grocer targeted market are those expat... Kinda higher end for grocery shopping. Middle class citizen prefers Lotus's (Tesco before 🙂), Giant, AEON, Mydin. 😊😉

Oh you're definitely not gonna find Malaysian-sourced fresh milk (AFAIK). They would all be from Oz or the kiwis over the pond. The Malaysian milk may be powdered once or UHT? Nothing better than fresh Aussie milk though, especially with a good coffee....which is pretty hard to get in KL but everywhere in most Australian cities :(

Miss Skye, you might want to consider Malaysian brands Alternative rather than sticking to western brands. They are expensive because they are imported. Like the Heinz beans -> buy Ayam Brand or Yeo's instead. If you want Cornflakes, buy Nestle rather than Kellogg's (Although I dont think Nestle has Special K). I go to Village grocer too sometimes, those RM10 brocollis are organic. I just saw a Japanese KZbinr, they went to Aeon and bought a bunch of Japanese brand products, went home and complained stuff are expensive!!! 😓😓😓
