Supermassive Black Holes on a Collision Course (ESOcast 246 Light)

Using the ESO’s Very Large Telescope, astronomers have revealed the closest pair of supermassive black holes to Earth ever observed. This video summarises the discovery.

I've always wondered why black holes collide but planets and their host star don't. Or stars randomly passing by and being gravitationaly pulled into each other.

I always thought super massive black holes cannot merge till the end of universe due to final parsec problem due to dynamical friction and conservation of angular momentum.

So 154 million sunmasses is a supermassive blackhole and 160 million sumasses is a monster blackhole? Come on, that doesn't make sense, it's only a 4% increase in mass for the heaviest of the two.

Since both are labeled "super massive", its safe to assume two seperate galaxies are in a collision act.

At 0:32 the video says "they are located in a galaxy".... therefore they are in one galaxy. Moreover, with a separation distance of "just" 1600 light years, they must be inside one galaxy (our galaxy is about 100,000 light years wide).

@@smbhquasar1527 Considering what the video says (I have no further info) it seems they located a galaxie with these 2 black holes in the middle that are near from each other and they will collide (and I do not believe I'll live to see that. HEHEHE). Cosmos is weird...

Empieza lanzando ondas electromagnéticas visibles hacia el espacio en busca de las imágenes, y es todo lo contrario, las imágenes viajan hacia nuestros radiotelescopios o instrumentos ópticos. No es una tontería, es que la mayoría de los científicos creen que nosotros viajamos con nuestros instrumentos hacia lo que está sucediendo y no es así. Hacia nosotros viajan imágenes de lo que sucedió y que ya no existe, 0,02 del documental

Sai lầm to lớn của các nhà vật lý thiên văn là khi họ nghĩ tồn tại hố đen. Thực tại không có Hầm hay Hố nào hết mà đó chỉ là các khoảng không trống rỗng mà thôi. Các ngôi sao chuyển động xung quanh khoảng rỗng và gây lầm tưởng cho thị giác con người về một Hố đen hay Vật chất tối nào đó. Nhưng đơn giản đó là một khoảng RỖNG do các góc chụp lệch lac của kính thiên văn rồi tô vẽ, hù dọa nhân loại. Mặc dù vậy tôi thừa nhận có các khối cầu vật chất (rắn, lỏng, khí) rất lớn tồn tại trong vũ trụ mà không phát ra ánh sáng. Nó chỉ to mức độ nào đó thôi, vì to quá nặng quá khối lượng giới hạn thì nó sẽ văng ra, vỡ ra thành các khối vật chất nhỏ hơn. Vũ trụ co thành chấm điểm là một suy nghĩ hoang tưởng, ngờ nghệch nhất của giới khoa học.
