Yeah, I wouldn't trust everything a teacher says. My history teacher once had to sub a GCSE Geography class on a trip to the countryside. Trekking up a hill, a student asked why this goat they saw was perfectly balanced on a steep incline. "That's a Cumbrian goat," he explained, "they've evolved their left legs to be longer than their right ones for balance." Walking down the other side, the same student asked "What about these goats?" "They're Lancashire goats, with longer right legs," he said, thinking the joke ended there. It wasn't til the exams period a few months later that the geography teacher asked him why the hell her students had written about the evolutionary differences of Cumbrian and Lancashire goats xD

Actually, the reason that Rover (or probe I'm not sure which) crashed on Mars is because when they went to land, the original math was done in metric system and JPL ran the program using the imperial system, so it measured in feet instead of meters and deployed it's parachute and jets too early.
