I feel like life would be a little less stressful if school did teach us more life related skills, as well as things that might help you excel in a specific career/major. They need to be more sensitive towards the fact that, overall, we're just people trying to survive, so why not try and help each other survive? You know, the older generation teaching what they've learned about life to the younger generation and vice-versa. It'd also make school feel far more useful, rather than just a means of getting a diploma and validation that you're smart enough to get a good job. I've been thinking about this a lot lately, as a newly graduated senior... so this podcast came at a perfect time ☺

I dropped out of highschool because it was useless. It taught me to hate other people and to hate math. It didn't tech my anything I use in my day-to-day life except reading. If I could have just gone to school for art then I would have excelled but the rest of it made me want to blow my brains out and wasn't worth it.

In respect to Cultural Appropriation, this is specifically a branch of colonial criticism. It is meant to define the relationship between coloniser and colonised, so by that definition it describe how an oppressor uses (or misuses) the oppressed group's culture. The criticism is that a colonising power will adopt the colonised peoples cultural traditions, recreate their iconography and even use their language, but they will misunderstand and change these practises to fit their own cultural mores and use this new mutated culture to change the colonised practices. This isn't always an intentional practice, the coloniser can even have the very best of intentions, but either way, an oppressed culture has had their culture taken and changed by an oppressor. However, all of this is an abstract of a problem, reality is a lot blurrier. The problem in America is the relationship between coloniser and colonised is a lot greyer. In theory America is a multicultural nation that shares and integrates different cultures. Though there are segments of the culture that feel balkanised from the rest and see attempts by others to adopt their culture as a form of appropriation. No one owns culture, so appropriation is going to happen; the question is, is it moral to do so? The problem is with morals, they're kind of subjective. Individuals will use high-level academic concepts that only half understand as cudgel to beat down otherwise good people. This whole problem is frankly much too complicated to have any certainty about what is right or wrong. I think given America's philosophy of multiculturalism, appropriating other cultures is kind of the point. Some will argue this will drive a nation towards nihilism, but you have to have some faith that new homogeneous cultures will replace it.

I am Hawaiian. Hawaii is the most recent example of cultural erasure. A foreign power invaded our country, made laws against the use of our language, and forced the native religion out of the country in place of Christianity. Now, of course, the religion is as fake as Greek mythology, but that's not the issue. As a result, in modern day, the Hawaiian language and mythology is lost. Even families from native Hawaiian ancestry have no idea of what the language is structured like. The culture is also bastardized by American media. Hula girls? Yeah those didn't exist. Hula was exclusively a male only practice, until foreign powers came and I suppose you could say "appropriate" the culture. Now, everything said, there's nothing wrong with, say, a white person wanting to learn more about Hawaiian culture and history. Obviously. However, it's incredibly frustrating watching people spread what they believe about Hawaiian culture. For example, recently I heard someone on Facebook saying they love and worship Pele, the goddess of fire, lighting, and volcanoes. Something about beautifying a goddess that was deemed, originally, to be terrifying, and evil is disgusting to me. Just so you know, Pele turned someone into a pig and ruined their life because she didn't like them. Even modern day Hawaiians, off the big island, fear Pele as a supernatural apparition of sorts. So really, I have no issue with wanting to learn more about other cultures, but it's still important to be respectful and be mindful of that culture. Hawaiian culture is pretty much dead. Also fuck you it's oo-kuh-leh-lay not YOokA LaYLeE

He ended up with schitzopherenia, and now he worships this one evil hindu god because he believes that hindu god is constantly talking to him in his hea, that is his reality now. It's crazy because he didn't know anything about Indian gods prior to his shroom trip but now he knows all the names and lore

The college system in the United States is reaching a tipping point right now where the benefits are beginning to not outweigh the cost. Though lots of people are on the fence about it being worth it or not, in the future if the trend continues it will become undeniably not worth it - especially considering millenials are creating an environment of 'educational inflation' wherein they all have degrees and suddenly degrees aren't worth much - And as much as you'd like to get your Masters or whatever to be above the competition, clearly that'd be more expensive, on top of also being 'not worth it' or 'making you over qualified' for most fields. I'm sure it'll reset at some point, but at what point I don't think anyone is sure of.
@Bizzozeron7 жыл бұрын
On the topic of 'comedy standards' and lets players - I think that whether a joke is told infront of a crowd or on a lets play, it shouldn't be an issue if something is said that is slightly outrageous, purposefully offensive, or clearly sarcastic. Comedians- professional comedians - can say and do say offensive shit all the time, so while on a Super Mega lets play they might say "HAHA ISIS 9/11" it might be a juvenile joke, but its a fine joke. Likewise, a practised comedian can make a more eloquent or complex "HAHA ISIS 9/11" type joke and it should be recieved the same, its just more tied together and less cheap. No comedy should be censored, we should hold eachother to a human standard of reason and assume that the person infront of us means no harm, and not the opposite. "Offense is never given, it is always taken."

I live in western Canada and we actually have a class in high school about the real world. It's called CALM (Career And Life Management). It's required to graduate high school and we learn about life expenses (specifically in our twenties), healthy relationships, sex education, child care, getting a job, and a bit more. It's definitely great and useful, but its only a semester long, it's not taken too seriously by a lot of students, we skip a lot (ex. taxes and other finances), and what we do cover is sometimes rushed and condensed. Though it is a step in the right direction and is incredibly useful, hopefully it will be changed for the better.

cultoral appropriation is mostly about not giving credit for a culture's thing, and claiming it as your own, not necessarily enjoying that culture. If you're enjoying something from a culture, that's totally fine, but saying that you came up with that and that your race or whatever is to credit for that idea is cultural appropriation, in my mind at least

Man, Not only was that cool of them to put up that warning on their politics talking, but i actually really enjoyed a lot of what they were talking about. The reason I've understood that schools teach the way they do is because of tests like the ACT and SAT. If they can cram all the info that is on those tests in our heads, not even to last, and you can do well on those test, you make the the schools look better on paper. So schools just want to look good on testing over actually educating the students. Its why my high school didnt have any Art, Home Ec, or PE classes available because you don't use those on testing.

I think it's just really important to be respectable when embracing other cultures. I think the Native American headdress is a good example of talking something without understanding the concept. A symbol of respect and status taken as a fashion statement, it's almost like wearing a Purple Heart as a pretty pendent.

Schools are private, but community colleges are smaller and can be partially government subsidized IF they hold up to certain standards. However, the only reason everyones school is so expensive is the same reason an aspirin is $30 at the hospital. It's based on the fact that 90 percent of the people walking in there will NOT be paying for it themselves due to insurance (grants in the case of college).

I have friends who took French class for many years in school and came out of it hardly knowing any French at all. It's disappointing. You most definitely have to seek help outside of school if you're serious about becoming fluent in another language.
