Spoilers for the game: Ryan is right about the painting. There are three different endings to the game where the paintings are different. Apparently the game is a choose your own adventure so depending on how you interact with objects/where you walk around the house will trigger different endings. The painting could be your wife, a self portrait, and I think the third one is of your daughter. Loving this series btw.

There are 3 total endings; the “Endless Loop” ending, where you fail to ‘perfect’ the painting and keep trying to get it right, only to continue down the same path again and again. Then, there’s the “Self Portrait” ending, where you neglect anything related to your family and only focus on yourself, ending with you drawing a self-portrait and having it hung up in a museum. Then there’s the “Family” ending, which is similar to the “Endless Loop” ending in the sense that you fail to perfect the painting, but this time, you faced what you did to your family and end up killing yourself in a fire to atone.

Games are rarely scary because of gameplay reasons, I don't find the gameplay aspect of games like Amnesia scary because the only consequence of dying is maybe losing a bit of progress. It's not scary because three boys are ripping on it and hooting and hollering the whole time, probably in a well lit room. Like yeah, a scary movie isn't going to be scary if you're doing a riff track on it.

I've personally been enjoying it but if I may play devil's advocate, I think I understand why. Horror playthroughs are big in let's play communities (arguably even the cornerstone of why LPs became big in the first place). And it's because it's fun to watch your favorite content creators get scared. Supermega isn't typically like that and doesn't really make that kind of content so it's fun to see it at Halloween, when there's an excuse to play actual scary stuff. But with three of them on the couch the constant chatter is guaranteed. Unless the horror game is really aggressive with its scares, most rely on atmosphere to absorb a player so the scares work. If you aren't absorbed, any game will feel stupid. And it's really hard to feel absorbed with 3 people. Most horror games will feel "on the rails" in this scenario.
