Supermicro and Solidigm on E3.S Gen5 Petascale Systems [GTC 2024]

At GTC 2024 Jordan took some time to chat with our friends at Supermicro and Solidigm, and their role working together on next-generation large capacity SSD's and storage servers. They're taking a look at the Supermicro Petascale E3.S SSD server, a 1U server with 16 SSD support and a 2U version that supports 32 SSDs. Getting this many drives into dense enclosures is one thing, but Supermicro has to enable all the back I/O and expansion slots as well. Then Jordan talks with Solidigm about their latest SSDs, including a massive 30.72TB E3.S SSD that's amazingly thin and powerful. Sounds like Solidigm Gen5 SSDs are coming soon too!

Not bad. I see they also make a single socket system like this, that is good. Even better would be if there was a EPYC Siena (8004 series) CPU variant. (Siena still has plenty of PCIe to drive 18 drives at full speed and width, plus room for 16x NIC, and 2 M.2s for boot). But I know Supermicro will not make one, maybe TYAN or Gigabyte will do it, as they have more interesting products. Also I like these short flat MCIO cables. 3M had them for so long time, and they even have better signal properties than other cables, but not many server makers use them. Not sure why.

Are you in our office? Literally just hung up on a call about new Siena systems...great argument there for Siena cores vs power envelope. We're seeing a ton of interest in Siena, there might be many more options if this picks up.

some consumers still use 2.5 / 3.5 inch sata ssd units. it would be amazing if we saw a solidigm ssd in that format since so many fail after barely 2 years
