Supermodel Shalom Harlow EATS the Runway: reacting to some of her most legendary runway walks!

Canadian supermodel Shalom Harlow bursted onto the 90s runway scene in true storybook fashion. After years of dancing and acting, she was discovered at a concert and recalled that within two weeks, she was in a meeting with Gianni and Donatella Versace. Her acting experience and striking look earned her small roles in movies like "In & Out" (1997) and "How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days" (2003). Shalom's first name means 'peace' in Hebrew, but she was everything but peaceful when it came to her time on the runway.
Defined by her fearless attitude and cutting cheekbones, Shalom became a certified It girl in the 90s fashion industry. She graced covers, fronted campaigns, and quickly became a favorite of innovative designers like Thierry Mugler, Versace, and Todd Oldham. In 2007, Harlow was named number 13 in the world on Forbes' 15 Top-Earning Supermodels. In recent years, she's opened up about some personal health issues, but continues to make fabulous cameos for houses like Schiaparelli and of course, Versace and Mugler.
One of Shalom's most iconic walks of the 90s involved her now best friend and proclaimed "soul sister", Amber Valetta. In the Todd Oldham Spring 1995 runway show, Shalom strutted the catwalk at a pace fierce enough to literally pass Amber. Her seemingly careless attitude about overshadowing her fellow model became an instant tabloid headline, but the real beauty comes when she invites Amber to keep up and pose alongside her at the end of the runway. Luckily, Amber seems to be a good sport while this is all going down; however, I'm not sure it would have been as cordial of an ending with certain other supermodels of the 90s. blink blink blink
Shalom is also known for one of the most iconic runway moments in history. In the Alexander McQueen Spring 1999 show, she was the star in the finale rotating in a white dress while being spray painted by two robots. The finale display was the first of its kind and cemented both her and McQueen in the legendary fashion archives. Think Bella Hadid before Bella Hadid was Bella Hadid!

Malcolm, you ask "which supermodel should you feature next"? Have you considered Carolyn Murphy? Estee Lauder's "face" of the late 90s & early 2000s, and replaced Liz Hurley. She's sort of the "girl next door" who is FULL of versatile looks. She's grown so much, too over the last 25 years. Like Shalom, she's now about 50, and still modeling, very much in fact. She, Shalom & Amber V are also very good friends & recently did a great fun spread in one of the featured big magazines with Amber & Shalom.

So I have met her twice and she was so sweet both times ! She’s taller than people say at least 6’ ish . She actually had some hardships because she was “ too gothic and tall “ but I think she was so elegant and that’s why she was always booked .

If I'm not mistaken, Shalom, like Naomi, had dance experience (hence the "looks effortless" walk). Both her parents are artists ( hence the ease with creative transformations) Harlow always brings "a presence" to any runway. But she also did some amazing editorial work, too.

Several people people have "beat me" to the punch. Shalom actually did train to be a ballet dancer though early on, she realized she was way too tall for ballet. She talks about it in an early interview with a Vogue editor. (If you search for it, it is about 20 years old) and she's featured in the interview with some pet finches in the background, and she actually talks to the little finches on camera (which warmed my heart.).

Oh fun fact, shalom harlow was discovered at a cure concert when she was 17, she is 49 and still ralph Lauren's top booked model. She just killed the fall collection, teaching the kids how it's done and looking younger than gigi

Shalom is one of the BEST runway girls on the catwalk. Thank-you for this video. Some of her best shows were Mizrahi and Rifat Ozbek. There is one runway show (I hope you or I can find it) that was absolutely amazing theatre from Shalom. Mizrahi's show where she has her back turned to the catwalk attendees, you see her as a silhouette fluffing her hair as she opens up to Dusty Springfield's Son of a Preacher Man --- AMAZING!

Oh she is a GODDESS!!!! Lately I've been OBSESSED with all things Galliano and you should definitely check her out in his shows, she was a showstopper and certainly theatrical, she closed his iconic show with the oversized chairs/madame butterfly themed show, ugh can't remember the year, anyway it was EVERYTHING, seriously, I was gagged!!!! Amber Valetta has really gotten my attention and also Eva Herzigova (watching her in the Dsquared2 shows, oh that's a MOMENT), Jessica Stam, Carman Kass, the 90's were insane, the models, the shows, I don't remember Isaac Mizrahi's clothes being as good as they were.....ok I'm blathering on, just found your channel and I'm loving everything, subscribed can't wait for what else you have to say.....the 90's and early 2000's, just wow and I'm floored by the genius that was Galliano, sad how addiction can affect a person, but it doesn't alter or change how brilliant he was, like how can one man think up ALL that fashon!?!?! So glad I found your channel ❤❤❤ Edit: wanted to also add a heartbreaking note regarding Shalom that speaks to her resilience and SUPERMODEL status.....she had to take a 10 year break from modeling to fight a near fatal illness, I think (but could be wrong) lyme disease or if not that, an illness brought about by exposure to black mold.....she could have died, had to leave modeling but fought back and here she is better than ever....the photo shoot of her dancing in those crazy pants was her comeback moment right after she returned, she's brilliant!!!!

She was the one of the first of the "Waif' crop of models that came onto the scene in the mid 90's. She was a star from the start and ruled the runway with her best friends Amber Valetta. She put her stamp in the modeling world and became one of the greatest of all-time. She is one of the few Supermodels from 90's that is still walking the runway today...along with Naomi and Eva Herzigova.

For the spring summer 1995 Todd Oldham show all of the models got air brushed t shirts. Nadja wears hers right after Shalom in the show. Todd was working on the line in Texas and the state fair was going on. He saw an air brushed t shirt stand and got one for each girl in the show that year.

I hardly ever see it featured anywhere which makes the show really underrated. One of my favourite shows of all time and the clothes are just modern, colourful, fresh, bold is Viktor & Rolf SS2009 digital show. Every model in that show is Shalom Harlow. The clothes, the walk, perfection!

…”walk like Anna Bayle…and..and…and”… the era of haute couture especially with Mr Christian Lacroix…..he almost always have Ms Bayle perform for his technically complicated and voluminous masterpieces…be worn and be walked by Ms Bayle….. change vibe ..change music….and her walk…is like no other…she doesnt play games….no playing cute…but delivers a moment that elevates the look .like no other..the glide…tension on the fingers..right hip comma to follow unto the next chapter of the story as told by her chapters of her story that is her full runway appearance with the look as the essence of that story…no extra tricks..arms flailing unnecesarily…head/face projections …purposefully detailed….seamless jacket removals ..and turns (not twirls)…her turns……are not because she is a model and she can…but done in a series….in a way that she moves innately .. her walk is the kind that can not happen if taught by someone..with Mugler…paired with Iman…ignites reverence….and she walks amongst the great black beauties…Iman in her magnificence…actually mentioned feeling fear if Anna Bayle is to walk before or after her….but Ms Bayle collaborates and works with people on stage..

Amber went to hs there but dropped out to model and her mom took her to NYC. She got her GED when she was in her late 20s. Kinda proud of her for doing that when she has absolutely no reason to have one , but she did it anyway. Most of what you read about her are lies or cover and she does not like people to know anything about her life. So I occasionally do this and it gets back to her.......not much info but it really gets under her skin. I suggest you contact her and ask her , feel free to use the name I have used here. But I don’t really see it as complaining anyway, just her pointing out that a portion of that interview now makes her uncomfortable. Toni Braxton was also honest about Oprah making her feel uncomfortable with a certain comment in an interview that happened many years ago. It happens 🤷🏾‍♂️ even to famous people lol and I don’t see it as an attack on Oprah either. Just being honest about their feelings in that moment.
