The more reviews I read and watch, the more impressed I am by NAIM. There are many metrics a person can use for reaching such a position, but the one that strikes me is how you'll never hear a reviewer with a pair of speakers say, "Next I tried them with the NAIM blah-blah-blah, and *that* combination didn't work at all." You'll literally never hear that -- and you do hear it with seemingly all the other most-respected names in amplification. People have disliked a particular pair of speakers with a Hegel. They've disliked a particular pair of speakers with a Cambridge. Or a Willsenton. Or a Sugden or an Atoll. But you'll never hear it with a NAIM.

PRESENT NAIM IN 3 WORDS OR LESS: Low build quality. Must be left on constantly drawing massive electric current. Expensive recapping REQUIRED every 10 years. Use of overpriced DIN cables. Always an option to buy a new PSU for "better sound". Proprietary star-grounding mess equals incompatibility with other equipment without hum. Loudly humming toroid transformers. Famous Naim speaker hiss can be heard from 3 meters away with 87db speakers. Zero soundstage, only pounding exaggerated mid-bass. Naim "PRaT" is a marketing gimmick. Cold, steely, metallic and abrasive sound equals immediate listening fatigue. Naim repair service requires several months of unit immobilization. Naim has lost 3 CEOs, 2 Marketing Directors and countless technical engineers in the last 2 years. Naim INSISTS on using ALPS blue velvet potentiometers for balance and volume control which are ALWAYS imbalanced and SKEWED either left or right. It impossible to have a centered musical image for stereo listening with Naim equipment. Naim STILL will not update the omerta on using non-Naim speaker cables as they threaten this will "blow up" your amplifier because of inductance, resistance and capacitance values. Naim is now obligated to demo with Focal speakers, and vice-versa, due to the unnatural and illogical marriage of two brands managed by Vervent Audio Group. This entity is managed by Cedric Boutonnet from Saint Etienne, France and who doesn't give a SHIT about Customers in general and the Naim brand in particular. It is a well-known and well-documented fact that Naim and Focal do not work together and should never be in the same system. Imagine associating Naim with beryllium tweeters = instant ear bleed. Shall I continue? There's lots more to be said.

Goodness! I owned a 5i and it was buggy -- which I chalked up to being pre-owned -- but otherwise I had none of the experiences you're describing here. I'm not saying you're wrong, first because right and wrong don't work that way, and second because I have no dog in this fight, but here's what I *might* be saying: For you to be as right as you sound, there would have to be something extremely unlikely going on in the review community. I have personally never heard a single reviewer talk about "that famous NAIM speaker hiss" that you make sound like everyone is talking about. I've never heard a reviewer talk about poor soundstaging. I've never heard a reviewer talk about NAIM being a poor match with Focal speakers and I've never heard a reviewer talk about being able to hear transformer hum. [Please feel free to link any examples of these things as I am genuinely perplexed and quite willing to be wrong.] What troubles me a bit more is that I feel there are some well-known truths about NAIM buried in the middle of your post. And to me that collision of things most people do talk about (such as the balance knob, finicky about cable capacitance, hard sell on separate power supplies, etc) with criticisms are not as widely shared, make it a bit too easy to imagine that the widely-shared stuff is supposed to be some kind of Trojan horse to credibility for the overall opinion. (In debate prep there's even a term for this: It's called "The Sweep" and the way it's supposed to work is that a debate participant rattles off fifteen accusations, knowing that some of them are true and some of them aren't, with the confident understanding that any effort to parse between the two groups will read like equivocation.) Clearly you know what you're talking about -- that comes across 5x5. This isn't a case of a keyboard warrior with a fact-free agenda. But I for one would have appreciated a little more support for some of these assertions, and, dare I say it, a lot more humility regarding the more personal side. Lots of people, sir -- lots and lots and lots and LOTS of people -- absolutely adore their Naim kit. For your opinions to merit the kind of swagger implied by its tone, they would literally all have to be completely and objectively wrong. Seems unlikely.
