I keep forgetting you guys watched the pilot a long time ago, so regarding your question about Mary knowing what John and the boys do the answer is no, cause John became a hunter after and because of Mary's death, in the pilot Sam says John became obsessed with finding the thing that killed her, and in episode 09 we learn that after the fire he was trying to find answers about what happened and that's how he met the psychic lady. Also Sam was a baby and Dean was four when she died and in the pilot Sam mentions the way they were raised after their mom died, so her death is what led all of them on the hunter path. At least that's what I remember, I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, hopefully without spoilers

This episode was criticized very heavily at the time, oh so many years ago, but I always thought the story played out pretty well. Getting Dean sex was a bonus too, but the brotherly banter was super fun and got a good doublemint twin shot.
