I love Alastair's voice in this one. The actor really went all out. One of the best Supernatural episodes!

Chris Heyerdahl (Alistair) definitely makes some interesting choices with many of the characters he plays.

John broke out of hell when the Devil's gate broke open and they killed Azazel, so it's safe to assume that happened around the time John spent around 100 years on the torture rack..

John escaped after 100 years. Remember the gate opened and John walked out at the end of Season 2 he grabbed the yellow eyed demon and held him so Dean could kill him.

It's sad seeing Dean have to go to "that place", psychologically and emotionally. Can't watch him do it anymore. They both make the torture scene seem so real. And Uriel... I've rarely loathed a character from their start. But him I did. Dude makes him so menacing. Hats off to everybody in this ep. Fr

Just a personal theory, but I don’t think John was really given the choice, I think that was Alastair messing with him. I don’t think John was considered “righteous” in the terms needed for the seal. John had a hell of a life but he also did a lot of messed up stuff so I don’t think he would qualify. Dean being younger and haven’t made any truly unrighteousness choices made him the candidate they needed. Again just my take on it.

Yeah, the theory that John is NOT the righteous man in the context of this apocalypse arc is prevalent in fandom theory, especially in tumblr verse, and it is not even a headcanon, it is literally canon if we can connect the dots. (Spoilers ahead ... ) I hope Imon won't mind some spoilers here since she had already seen up to 5.15 Dead Man Don't Wear Plaid on Patreon, as I want to quote Gabriel's reveal from 5.08 Changing Channels for my point. Gabriel said: Why do you think I've always taken such an interest in you? Because from the moment Dad flipped on the lights around here, we knew it was all gonna end with you. Always. .../end So the angels' side has ALWAYS knew that Dean and Sam are important for the apocalypse, but NOT on the demons' side. The demons probably knew how the apocalypse mechanism worked, but not who were the relevant parties. They had assumed initially it was going to be John (he is not) as the Righteous Man to jumpstart by breaking the first seal. Maybe that's why Azazel was still infecting babies in S1 for some spares just in case Sam's generation of Special Children didn't work out. He didn't even know that Sam was important - he was rooting for him though - when he went along with Jake (in S2). Maybe Alastair knew but not Azazel. Maybe Lilith knew AFTER S3 that Sam was important, after she tried to hurt/kill Sam in the S3 finale but couldn't. The point is: that the demons don't know the whole story, but the angels' side does, though not every angel like Castiel, but those in management like Zachariah (from 4.22), do.

I like how the show decides to challenge the prevailing beliefs around Angels as sweet fat cherubs all about love, when this version definitely leans into the self righteous soldier vibe: it's like, if they're really on the side of good, is it wise to question? But why have free will if it cant be excercised, even in the face of "i dont really care about your problems" Angels

John in the context of the Righteous Man that Alastair told to Dean, is most likely a lie, as specified by the canon of the show, and this fan theory is pretty valid and canonically logical in my opinion. If we go back and analyze the prior season's scenes, particularly in S2, these theories can be logically supported and explained by canon. For example, in Crossroad Blues the crossroad demon tries to tempt Dean to trade his soul to get John back - how is this possible and allowed if John was supposed to shed blood to jumpstart the apocalypse? And then in the S2 finale, John escaped hell with the other demons, how could he manage to do this if he was tied up on the rack being tortured by Alastair 24/7 as he [Alastair] had claimed? And about the "a hundred years" of Alastair torturing John and he still not break (which is mind-boggling if this is true), this can be explained that he [John] might have actually been broken but the seal remained intact because he is NOT the prophesized Righteous Man - because Dean IS. Another point to consider, in this episode Alastair already knew about the drips of water on the devil's trap chalk drawing. He knew he could eventually escape the trap, he just needed time, and to play mind games with Dean - until when the time was right. And he certainly did that. He managed to mess with Dean's head massively and get under his skin with all the supposed "reveals" about John and Dean himself in the meantime. He then knowingly looked over his shoulder to see the progress of the drips. He ALREADY knew about the drips that were going to erase the devil's trap. Alastair is not a reliable narrator on top of being a villain, so we cannot believe and trust in his words fully. (Spoilers for 5.08) From the angels' side, Gabriel later canonically says the universe is always going to end with Sam and Dean. It is going to be the fight of brother against brother from the beginning and not father against son. So John is not the Righteous Man and therefore Alastair is only messing with Dean. The point is: that the angels knew Dean was "the righteous man" the whole time. The demons may have believed it was John who they needed for a time. However, there's also reason to suspect the demons found out rather early that John wasn't the person they needed to break, most likely just before Crossroad Blues happened by the latest. TLDR; the angels' side knew who the Righteous Man was and it was not John, but the demons' side didn't know (I expanded this theory with @brianhampton923's post) Also, if all it takes was a righteous man shedding blood in hell, since in all of the creation times that people have been going to hell, there's never been a righteous man who broke? Somebody would have broken a long time ago. This gives credence to the spec that only Dean is the Righteous Man in an apocalyptic way because of the prophesied brother-against-brother fight of the end of days. When Dean sold his soul to trade for Sam's life - who is one of the Special Children - the apocalyptic bat signal was transmitted to the angels' and the demons' realms that the end of days was nigh.

You are missing the point. Demons didn't know how to raise Lucifer until Lucifer tells Azazel in 1972(S4 finale) First Seal was a righteous man shedding blood in Hell and Last is the Lucifer's vessel killing Lilith. A righteous man might have shed blood before Dean but there was no Sam to kill Lilith. A righteous man must not have shed blood in Hell before, I think, because demons would never make such an offer to him but with John and Dean, they knew what to do. Besides they would hardly get any righteous man in Hell earlier, especially as righteous as John or Dean.

@@Saurabh-adc If I miss the point as you say, it was by design as I am not trying to write a whole thesis (though it might look like it, lol). I'm not including other pertinent details that were outside of the points I raised, just those within the scope of this episode, of which I reiterate and summarize here, were - - the primary point of this post being John wasn't the correct Righteous Man, citing the relevant episodes that can show how this could be, - the demons don't know who that person was, via the same relevant episodes, (I also expanded this theory in another thread with another different commenter), - they initially focussed hard on Sam and John but not Dean, and then pivoted to Dean when he made the deal, - Alastair lied to Dean to get the upper hand mentally, - while the angels knew all along about Dean. The last part of my comment in the above thread is an after- thought to generalize (in an off-handed manner) a closing paragraph to an opinion piece while emphasizing that ultimately, the prophesied brother-against-brother was the story being told, even if my post was written differently from the words that you used. I am aware of the specific points plus others you've raised, just again, not within the scope of that I am focussing here (which is that Alastair lied about John being the Righteous Man, Dean is the one) so I am not missing anything actually. Though thank you for adding those elaborating points anyways👍

This season really changed Sam and Dean forever, things are not the same for them since Season 1 which is just sad😢 It's never explained what happened to John after the Season 2 finale, I always assumed he passed on into heaven. Unrelated I miss Super Sam, he was really at his Peak this season, which is truly sad. Great Reaction Imon🤗💙💙

easily one of the best episodes of season 4 and the whole show. Secondly, they were going for a Marlon Brando vibe I think for Alastair.
