I loved that they use Bobby as Sam's inner thought that wants to go if your time is up (hello, continuity from S7) and Dean as the opposite of that. We've seen this before in When the levee breaks where Sam tends to compartmentalize his thoughts by projecting specific arguments onto individuals from his life. And I appreciate this method of storytelling too, it can easily let the audience know Sam's inner thought process from beginning to the end, and how we can understand where he stands at every point and at the very end of things. And it is kinda interesting to note that Death is there on Sam’s terms. Meaning he is not there to reap Sam if Sam doesn’t want to die. Sam has a choice whether to die or not. This leads to why I can also understand where Dean is coming from too and why he was surprised that Sam is giving up. Death is right there giving him the choice to live or die. Whereby before he collapsed, Sam already agreed to stop the trial and live. So I kind of do not have an issue that Dean lets Ezekiel possess Sam in order to not let him die when there is still a way to continue living, to save Sam. By whatever chance there is. That is the Dean's way - you just don’t give up, you find another way. He didn’t simply let any angel possess Sam, he referred to Castiel, to find out about this new angel. And Cas vouchs for Ezekiel. Furthermore, at the moment that the possession happens, Dean has every intention of telling Sam about Ezekiel. Only later he was pressured with the worst-case scenario into keeping it a secret. I'd rather take a risk and have the person I love survive than do the morally right thing and hope later everything works out for the best. They can work on the solution or make everything better between them on another day. In that way, I guess the intention is what matters the most to me here. In the s8 finale, for Sam, it was, "I'd rather be dead than disappoint you again. I can't fail you again." In the s9 premiere, for Dean, it was, "I'd rather you hate me than you be dead. I can't fail you again." The Winchester codependency circle was laid out plainly for all to see.

I really enjoyed the cameos from Bobby and Death here. This first part of the season has some intriguing stuff but my favorite part is definitely Cass learning how to be a normal “guy”. Getting thirsty and hungry… pretty cool.

OMG, you just made me laugh so hard! And feel so old. Were you brought up on streaming services much? Until 10 years ago, that was the timeline for EVERY show, for the past 4 decades, at least. And if you pay attention to, and watch in real time, network shows, it’s STILL the schedule. Shows have they’re finales in May, during sweeps week. And start the next season late September/early October! Sweet lord, I forget how young you are! 😂 Love you! 😉

I kinda wish I could watch this episode without the context of the previous episode. Because emotionally, I just cannot get into Sam's struggle this episode. I felt so annoyed that they "chickened-out" on closing Hell despite all that happened to make that possible, but I can see some people's arguments for why that was interesting and emotionally impactful. But then this very next episode, Sam is contemplating whether to let go of life or not?? Bitch, if you wanted that, you could have closed the Gates of Hell yesterday! I feel like I can TRY to get invested in one or the other of these struggles, but I cannot manage both, I'm so annoyed by it 😂

I really hate this season and this episode. The writers just switched roles from last season of which brother does something stupid for the sake of a feud

Do you really see it as writers making SILLY FEUDs between the brothers? ... ... because the theories that I am partial to were: that the writers were putting forth that the bro-codependency as something that was not good for the boys, AND showing that their co-dependency with each other was the ROOT cause of their feud, i.e. the writers are breaking the co-dependency so to speak since, you know, it was not a healthy relationship as it was borne out of generational trauma and from the isolation forced upon them since their childhood. In the Kripke era, he made it seemed like the co-dependency was something that was good for them - "we'd do anything for each other"-like style, hence romanticizing the co-dependency as something that sounds better than it really is, or believe that it is something better than it really is. Meanwhile, during the Carver era onwards, the co-dependency eventually will hurt others around them as the boys starting to form bonds and relationships WITH other people (Benny last season, we will see what happens to their closest ally in the coming episodes soon) and henceforth these are the trials and tribulations arising out of them wanting to form that support bonds with others, ... which is where 'breaking the co-dependency' theories come from ...

@@rose_mnor The writers aren't trying to break the co-dependency. As Dean said at the end of season 8 "Don't you dare think that there is anything, past or present, that I would put in front of you! It has never been like that, ever!"

Dean had no choice in this ep. He didn't have time to look for other options. Last season, Sam not looking for Dean and abandoning Kevin was bad writing, made no sense and was totally out of character. One of the writers wanted to have Sam look for Dean, but his idea was rejected. At least with Dean this season, they don't have him give up on Sam and walk away... that would've been out of character.

@@caseyanne967 S8 is just the beginning, lol ... Benny was the first casualty. It will unfold into multiple seasons. This is not a short plot arc. Having said that, what the brothers feel towards each other was not the issue, it's a given no one is disputing that. It's what they are willing to do to save each other ... and I am not going into spoilers territories, you can look through Carver's era until S11 when Dabb take over.

@@rose_mnor Sticking to this season for a moment, what else could Dean do? He was out of time, if he didn't let Gadreel possess Sam, Sam would've been dead and gone forever. The show would not go on without Sam. Do you think that Dean should've walked away and let Sam die? When making that choice, Dean has no way of knowing if there will be consequences from it later on. Good or bad things can happen. The writers could give it a positive outcome, a negative outcome, or a mix of both. But doing nothing meant Sam dead and gone forever and Dean would have to live with that. Also, Jared and Jensen wouldn't do the show if one of them was gone, so that wasn't an option.
