I'm SO glad you did this one. This is BY FAR THE BEST live version of Rhiannon. You get a really nice section of Christine McVie on the keys/organ AND an extended outro, not on the album version, that is just magic. Not only that but everyone was just 110% on their game that night.

This is the song that carried me across the Pacific ocean! Seattle to Korea...the musical offerings were limited, so I chose 'rock'. 9 songs on rotation...'Rhiannon' was one of them. Her voice, the guitars, the tempo all seemed to blend into the murmuring of the jet engines. I was terrified to be flying over a vast ocean, but I was 'taken by the wind".

If you haven't seen it you would enjoy the documentary film "Sound City" about the famous recording studio in Los Angeles. Directed by Dave Grohl, it tells the stories of many bands who recorded there, and Fleetwood Mac is a big part of the story. Also Dave invites many artists into his studio (he purchased the Neve mixing board when Sound City closed) including Stevie Nicks, Paul McCartney, Rick Springfield and others to jam. Lots of info and really fun!

Call me crazy, but I see a lot of similarity between Stevie and young Emma Kok in their lower registry. I think Emma could do this song justice if ever she were to perform it. I actually saw Stevie perform Rhiannon with Fleetwood Mac very close-up in 1975 at San Diego's old Balboa Stadium (no longer there). She performed it with an energy and passion I had never experienced before. She was absolutely mesmerizing, and I will never forget it. I'm awash in fond memories right now, and a little choked up. Thanks for reacting to, and analyzing this performance. Very well done and informative. All the best.

I read Triad when it came out. it's about a woman with an evil twin who, it turns out, doesn't really exist. There was an odd amount of these novels in the 70s, such as Thomas Tryon's The Other. It's funny, but the first time I heard the Fleetwood Mac song, I knew exactly where it came from. As I recall, Rhiannon & Branwen are Welsh legend.

She wrote this witch song in record time. Another case of a group member's girlfriend, immediately discounted until she very soon became the star of an already top band! She has the best vibrato ever in rock. Their breakup album (everyone was sleeping with each other) was also their best, and a candidate for the best and most influential album of our times. Christy McVie died just recently. Nicks was known for her sheer, waving outfits. Her LANDSLIDE song was her best, but also her duets with other rock legends. She's indescribable.

Understood you're a pop person. Stevie Nicks has over a thousand songs in her catalog that she has written, by her own pen, she was a member of one of the biggest rock and roll bands of all time. Not to mention her solo career. She has collaborated with people like Tom Petty, and Don Henley... Just to name a few. No superficial songs like Party in the USA... Just saying. You're talking the difference between a rock Goddess and a pop star. Have some respect.

Such a spectacular performance. The guitar and piano solos, and then that torrent of passion from Stevie to finish the song off. The only sad thing is I've read that doing the song this way was unhealthy for her voice, so she had to change her singing style to achieve her longevity. The longevity isn't sad, that's a gift too, but the loss of this style is. At least there is a good recording of it. Beth, I've noticed that a lot of songs slow in tempo as the performers age. Is there a reason for this that you know of?

Worth noting that this predates the Rumours tour: you can actually track the deterioration of Stevie's voice over the course of 1977 from pretty much the same as she has here early in the tour (able to let rip at the end of Rhiannon) to the very hoarse, world- and road-weary version you can find on a Tokyo '77 bootleg. As you say, it's low in her range, but by the end of that year on the road that's pretty much all the range she had left.

Whereas Christa Ludwig, a mezzo built to a similar frame, severly limited her performances in dramatic soprano roles so as to not over-use her voice and had a 47-year stage career, in prime voice for almost every year of it.
