Watching Sparg0 take this after getting 49th last year and also struggling heavily in recent brackets, just feels so good to finally see him come back to the top. SPOILERS: So happy for Spargo to finally get a recent major victory! Always believed in him and try my best to help (mostly focused on Hurt this tournament). Sonix is also incredible and a very nice guy (make sure to support his streams) hot take but i think they could be best 2 in the world alongside Acola. I love helping people achieve their dreams/goals and i would have been happy with either player taking GFs because they both worked so hard. The Roy was Spargo's secret weapon, but he wasnt sure who to use here, so i tried to give him Roy ideas here (will give more detailed video analysis soon/now for stream/vid). Shows that there's more to fighting Sonic than just being fast. Mythra can keep up but she doesn't threaten him in an any significant way, and Pyra struggles to touch him at all to make the switch worth it most of the time. Roy is just as fast, but he can actually do something to Sonic once he gets his hands on him. That, I feel, was the real deciding factor here. If Spargo makes his recovery with Roy picture perfect, this may be the permanent answer to Sonix.

People usually point to Sonix's improvements at edgeguarding Pythra as the main reason for his newfound success against them, which is fair, him innovating the offstage flowchart against them is a big reason why people stopped believing Aegis was the easy answer to Sonic after like 8 sets of Sonix being stonewalled by Leo and Sparg0's Aegis at every tournament. I think another reason that isn't mentioned as often though is just how good he became at playing around Pyra's large, slow hitboxes, both in neutral and disadvantage, it used to feel like stray Pyra aerials would constantly delete Sonix, but now Pyra's swings barely graze him and he's immediately ready to punish every time, even at the ledge where Pyra should be at her scariest it's looked so hard in recent times for Pyras to close out a kill on him after Mythra wins neutral. Roy on the other hand has like 10 different ways to kill before you can even react, F-Tilt kills stupidly early for how fast it is, it's so fast and strong it can act as a way to kill Sonic for doing ground Spindash at the right distances, D-Tilt puts you in a techchase situation where one F-Smash can kill you at 50-60% centerstage, and Side-B is especially prominent in the matchup because it outright beats Spindash somehow and Sonic is often charging it at the ledge where it kills very early, like you mentioned, Roy has no issues with meeting Sonic at the ledge before he can get around him, something Pyra can have trouble with due to her speed, and he can actually just kill Sonic if he does manage to catch him, unlike Mythra. At the ledge the difference is even more noticeable, Pyra has to predict Sonic's ledge option beforehand to kill because of how slow her buttons are while Roy barely has to do anything to threaten a stock, he can jab the ledge at random intervals or just stand there at roll range and his opponent will still be in massive danger because of how many options Roy can cover all at once, and if any of his noncommital options hit they make his opponent explode, he doesn't kill as early as Pyra does but he is so much more likely to kill if he pushes Sonic to the ledge (and he still kills at grossly early percents compared to the majority of the cast anyway). Most of that didn't happen in this set though cause most of Sonix's stocks were lost from getting Jaired after neutral get-up, if you do want to see more of Roy's options against a Sonic of Sonix's caliber though then SmashLIbrarian has most (all?) of the Sparg0 Roy vs Sonix VODs from their practice sessions together, the way Sparg0 wins the majority of their games with a Roy that's 80% piloted by fundies definitely validates my Roy beats Sonic narrative, cause even during those matches he'll fail Roy confirms and admit afterward that he just didn't know how to do them. I was also an Aegis beats Sonic believer for a super long time though, it's just as likely that Sonix finds a way to flip the matchup completely, maybe he figures out a flowchart to edgeguarding Roy that makes every backthrow offstage as dangerous for Roy as Roy's ledgetrapping is for Sonic, maybe he'll adopt a gameplan that makes it feel impossible for Roy to land anything but sourspots in neutral, or maybe there's a dozen different ways for Sonic to escape disadvantage against Roy that haven't been implemented yet, if a way exists he will find it, guy grinds like a monster at this game. I hope he doesn't though personally lol.

How is Sparg0 the best in the world when this is his first big win since an eternity? Acola and Miya are just more concistent and play in the strongest region. Just look at this top 8 with 5/8 players coming from Japan while players from the US and Mexico keep drowning in pools in Japan. At this point Sparg0 it’s hard to not see Sparg0 as the goat. Without relying so heavily on DLC with a character that has lackluster recovery, he’s taken out the best in the world time and time again. He hasn’t been shaken by any meta changes or goofy play styles like Sonix timeouts, Steve, or G&W His only notable bracket demon is Mkleo, which was a previous #1. The consistency in his performance is amazing, and his headspace and respect for the game kind of trumps Leo’s. I can see why he’s the only Smash player to be picked up by FaZe. Let’s go SparGOAT
