I just got a Samsung Galaxy S10e, and I want to use it as a DAP. It's got a headphone jack, but out of the box it's not quite as good as my Sony Walkman or Apple iPod. But with a few tweaks? It gets really close! This video is a tutorial that shows how I converted my S10e into a compelling digital audio player.

That S10e is a beautiful designed phone. It had everything you could want back when it launched. Too bad Samsung didn't follow up with a S20e and instead they made the S20 series more expensive, bigger, and most importantly, drop the 3.5 mm jack. Thanks for the video, I had my S10 for over a year and I didn't know about the volume limit or the Sound Assistant app.

Dude, I appreciate S10's audio quality too. It has a very clean output, which presents details clearly without bass rumbling too much like most phones do. Fun to see that you're doing the same thing as me. Please also try three things below: 1. Use USB Audio Player Pro app, it utilizes chip's hires DAC and can do bit perfect, bypassing Android's notorious upscaling. It even streams and decodes Tidal's MQA. 2. Connect your phone to a PC to fully enable Bxactions, there's much quicker response and the bixby animation is completely gone. 3. Switch off Dolby Atmos, turn on bit upscale (not bandwidth), and turn on Adapt Sound (choose soft, not clear) I have ditched my DAP.

@@lorcro2000 I don't think you know what you are talking about, DAC comes in different varieties and they range in qualities as well. A good DAC sounds miles better than a shitty one, it's not as simple as a DAC is a DAC as you put it, digital to analog conversion is very complicated. Without a good DAC first, no matter how good of an AMP you have, it's not gonna sound that good. The LG V series have ESS quad Saber DACs, these are one of the best on the market, hence why the LG V series is so popular among audiophiles as their daily smartphones. It does not have a dedicated AMP inside but its juice without an amplifier is more than enough for most IEMs.
@lorcro2000
@lorcro2000 5 жыл бұрын
@@versaleyang Meh. People have been making DACs for a long time now. A DAC can either get it right or wrong and most of them get it right. Audiophiles who have drunk the kool-aid are all "ooh DACs are important" but get real. There may be reasons to buy a pricier DAC/amp, but that will be because of the amp, not the DAC. There is nothing wrong with the Qualcomm DAC built into most Android phones, the problem if it exists is poor amplification. Any audiophiles who think the V-series sounds good because of DACs and not the high-power amps are just wrong.

Don't get it. My Samsung S10+ has a headphone jack. I've recently switched to wireless because they actually stay in my ears better and I don't want wires dangling around while I'm doing work. Before I made the switch I would never but a phone without one. Also, I use the Heydey earbuds. They're 50 bucks from target and they sound excellent. Battery life lasts longer than my 8.5 hour workday and the case charges up to 20 hours i think which I'll never need. I charge the headphones and case every night. Only bad thing about wireless buds is if you lose one its really hard to find them. That's why I'm afraid to buy more expensive ones. Think about if you're looking over a bridge or something and one falls into the water because a fly wasaround you head and you were swatting it and accidently knocked one out into the water. Then you're out 250 dollars. And back to sound quality, this sounds excellent so I wonder what the big difference is that would possess someone to buy 300 dollar headphones made for people on the go. I understand that premium xbox headphones go for like 175 to 200 on the highest end and i understand that because they can give you audio clues to determine exactly where you enemy is by footsteps and you know he's at approximately 7 o clock and you're able to spin around and kill him before he gets you. With ear buds, I only use them with my phone and they work better than fine. Can someone please justify why I'd spend 5 or 6 times as much money for headphones that are somehow supposed to sound better? I mean it can't be 5 or 6 times as good as my 50 dollar ones. I can't understand how much better the audio can get. Anyone wanna change my mind?

Buy a FiiO BTR3 or an Earstudio ES100 and stream LDAC Bluetooth to one of them. The combo will probably blow the sound out of the Samsung out of the water. The amp in the BTR3 is excellent. There is no hiss at all and it drives headphones very well. And bonus - every Android 8 or higher now comes with LDAC Bluetooth, ie 990k streaming, so you won't hear a difference between that and a cable, more than likely. Sure, $70 for the BTR3, and worth every penny. FiiO has a new model coming out in a month or two, the M5, which is actually a DAP, and a Bluetooth receiver, and a Bluetooth transmitter, which is pretty amazing, only question is price. You also don't have to play around with the phone buttons, the BTR3 has volume controls, track skipping, and play/pause, right on there... and of course t's also a Bluetooth headset. And going this route makes the phone unimportant. Any Android 8+ phone with an SD card slot will now be a superb "DAP" replacement.
@SuperReview
@SuperReview 5 жыл бұрын
I'll probably check out the new Fiio player, didn't think to use it as a Bluetooth receiver. I haven't tried LDAC yet, so far everything Bluetooth I've tried is noticeably a step down from wired.
@lorcro2000
@lorcro2000 5 жыл бұрын
@@SuperReview Yeah, 990k bitrate isn't an automatic guarantee of fidelity, but the chance it is goes up, compared to the less than third of that you get with SBC. But yeah, the new M5 was a surprise to me, it's slightly larger than the BTR3 (which to me is a real annoyance, I wanted smaller) but on the other hand it's also a DAP, a clock, a fitness tool and a Bluetooth transmitter. And its noise floor is even lower than the BTR3 which is already pretty spectacular. Basically it can be used as just a Bluetooth receiver - or else you can shove in some large microsd in there and use it as a DAP as well. Depending on price it looks really interesting. It's still technically a second device, but it' small enough to clip to your clothing so it's not nearly as bad as hauling a phone-sized DAP.

I have a btr3, but I have switched back to listen to wired on S10. After some adjustment, S10 really sings, to my amazement. Btr3, on the other hand, is clear but can sound boring at times for my earphones paring, too flat in general. And the most lethal: it stutters badly on Ldac 990kbps if I manually switch to that under developer's options.
@lorcro2000
@lorcro2000 5 жыл бұрын
@@sirch7141 Yeah, not saying it's necessarily the best for everyone, but with my headphones - both the Sennheiser HD58X and several types of IEM - the BTR3 sounds excellent and quite involving. I also have no LDAC stutter at all, I tend to keep both the BTR3 and my phone on my person. Mine never stutters at all unless I stand up and walk into another room perhaps.

@@lorcro2000 Glad you're enjoying your paring. Matching is also a very important part. One can find surprises sometimes. Just one thing, could I confirm with you that if you go to delevoper's options and manually choose Ldac 990kBps, there's still no stuttering on BTR3? Update: I have found the culprit. The location service. Turn it off and 990kbps streams normally. Too many bugs on S10!!!

I guess, but it still doesn’t even compete with the most portable of dedicated DACs (like the iBasso dc02, which looks like a dongle), and choosing a phone based on a bandaid feature like that Quad DAC is simply stupid, LG’s devices lack in so many areas when compared to flagships from other brands that it becomes a no brained to avoid them, even for audiophiles.

Neutron is the most feature pact audiophile player, but it's for the geeks (like me). Still, you will probably like Stellio most. Those players use their own pipeline, and do not resample all audio to 48kHz (if setup correctly), unlike 95% of the players out there. And thanks for this little video btw. I hate having to deal with a bunch of devices as well, that's why I had to seek out and get the best possible sounding phone.

If you are looking for a great phone replacement for a DAP that can also drive powerful headphones look into the LG V series of phones cause they can do exactly that and are arguably a true replacement for a decent DAP. I have the V20 and it's amazing, the second screen provides so much functionality with playing music that I didn't even know I wanted. Also for software I would definitely recommend making your own music server using airsonic so you can access you library anywhere without having to sync the files to your device everytime you want to listen to something new. Airsonic takes my flac library and transcodes it to mp3 on the fly and Music Stash is a great client that even can generate genre radios and suggestions based on what you're listening to.

I've used and loved Android in the past, but I've never found a way of syncing my library and more importantly created playlists to the phone without a rather clunky workaround, such as iSyncr and Rocket Music Player, which work fine, until I try to sync the device with my Car Stereo, which, as a musician, is a must in my line of work, as it's the only place I can practice working out vocal harmonies! 😉 I used to be able to do this with the old Micro USB connections, but since the advent of Type C, I just kept getting an error message, which forced me to ditch Android and move back to Apple, because, at least the lightning connection allows me to sync my phone seamlessly with the stereo. If anyone knows: a) Another way to painlessly sync playlists to an Android phone. b) A way to sync a phone to a Car Stereo using a USB C to Standard USB Cable input...I'd be really grateful and happy to switch back to Android in a heartbeat. After watching this video, I actually realized just how little I actually care about the quality of my portable music experience. I mean, I listen to music basically the whole day and sometimes sleep with headphones, so is not that I don't listen to it constantly, but I guess that after spotify and passable audio became a thing on phones and motherboards, it was basically good enough for me. The one thing that bothered me immensely was not having EQ for my headphones since the only headphones I can stand using without EQ are my modded dt880's. But installing some eq program, I find the rest to be ok. Granted, my headphones in general get extremely little use time as most of the time I'm either listening to my main home system, in the car, or the system at work.

KZ are a bit sibalent and a bit heavy on the bass so I cut that a bit on those. As for the HD6xx, they are actually the reason why I had to find EQ in the first place; based on the hype around them, I guess I expected them to be flawless. Sadly, I did not like their natural sound signature and I have to EQ them. They sound veiled to me, so I have to raise that high end a bit, while the bump at 125hz bothered me, so i have to dip that. On the plus side, I find them now to be my most comfortable headphones for long listening periods, so ironically they are the ones I used the most now.

I use automate to silence my phone notications when the headphone jack is plugged in, and to revert when unplugged. Also +1 for poweramp. The eq settings are excellent.

It would be nice to see a review on streaming services. How is music quality compared between them and compared to your own library and stuff like that

I tried Tidal for a week, which is supposedly the best, and it was clearly worse than my FLAC files on some Michael Jackson tracks I tested. Not a thorough test, but so far not great.

You can upload all your library to Google play music cloud, you can upload up to 50,000 song, there size Doesn't matter and it isn't compress the songs at all. You can sync the library from your PC and you can download it on your s10 or any device that you use with your Google account, and the best of all: is FREE

Google Music definitely re-compresses the music, I think it turns everything into 320Kbps MP3. Most of my music is FLAC.

LG V series still the best in Audio quality through headphones Seeing that the Note 10 may drop the headphone jack (Galaxy Fold doesnt have one either), they may as well be the only significant phones who retain headphone jacks on ALL flagships (looking at you, Huawei)
