A) Yes - that’s what I’m using in this video. See on-screen message at 10:30
REMOTE
Thanks for all the links to the remote on eBay - I had already seen that seller - they specialise in Superscope spares - However that remote is just for the CD recorder section, it costs a lot for what it is (including postage & duty) and I was never really all that invested in getting one. A viewer in the U.K. however has the full one that he is sending me as a favour.
NOPE
Quite a few people have stated that pressing the Record button again whilst the device is recording should increment the track number. It doesn't - perhaps they were thinking of another machine.

As hardcore fans of the Techmoan channel, it's a huge honour for us to have our music included in the making of this video. The Superscope PSD300 seems to outshine our Tascam CD-RW700 that we use in our own recording studio. A lovely example of a stand-alone compact disc recorder with professional specs.

I do think you make a very good point about having a lot of knobs, switches and buttons. I do find in a lot of modern cars, not only is it often really difficult to work out where a particular option is to turn on your heated seats or whatever, but it takes ages to scroll through all the menus when you really should be looking at the road. It's much easier seeing a button with a picture of a seat with what looks like bacon on it and pushing it.
@gayusschwulius8490
@gayusschwulius8490 3 жыл бұрын
This is a problem I experienced with the photocopier at our university. The old one had tons of buttons for everything you could do. Looked cluttered, but worked perfectly. The new one only has a touch screen with dozens of submenus. Took us ages to figure out how to do simple things like duplex scans. And even if you know where stuff is, it still takes far longer than on the old one to input your desired settings. It's a really stupid design philosophy more and more companies are falling for.

Wow the internal mic on that is better than 90% of KZbinrs' 'studio' microphones.
@strangersound
@strangersound 6 жыл бұрын
It did perform well, but it's likely a simple electret condenser. Usually about a dollar a piece in quantity. The problem with a lot of KZbin audio is the user, not the microphone. There are big name channels (I won't mention) that suffer from poor audio issues and these are entities that would definitely be using pro quality gear. Proper gain staging is the key and most independent content producers likely don't understand how to properly record audio. They don't understand why their audio quality is poor and the automatic assumption/idea is to buy a better microphone. But the real solution is to learn how to properly deal with gain staging, and also how to properly use a microphone, and deal with audio in post production. The room also plays a role, especially with any microphone that isn't a tightly focused cardioid. Another issue is the modern recording environment places so much emphasis on waveforms as a visual reference that people put too much trust is what they see, rather than what they hear. An example would be two waveforms side by side they may look very similar, but vary greatly in volume.

Lots of DJ equipment in the late 90s and early 2000s had a vocal reduction function, such as the Denon 2500-F, which had that feature and was pretty useless, unless you were a full time karaoke dj. Other than that, gimmicky and not very good.

There's no standard support for lyrics in a CD-audio, unfortunately. There are some karaoke CDs which use a modified standard for displaying lyrics, but they may have comparability issues with normal players, and are intended specifically for Karaoke machines. I have no idea why CD-text is so rare, I've always included it on every album I've worked on.

It never really caught on, but it was done on a few odd CDs. Here's one example (and it shows some of the data, as well): lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-questions/2012-November/246944.html I also found a book that mentions it at least slightly: books.google.com/books?id=Hs23Aax60XoC&pg=PA238&lpg=PA238&dq=CD+Text+lyrics&source=bl&ots=ifue4imKTq&sig=M2Wg9CwEAnZMfm6y3fGNSiwAA6s&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjYy-XDzZfZAhVP2mMKHYiFAJUQ6AEIVTAI#v=onepage&q=CD%20Text%20lyrics&f=false It seems like it's one of those things that was a bit pre-Internet and not very common, so may be hard to find a lot of information about online.

I used to have a 230 player. It was the play/pause feature that was why I bought it. I had a (brief) educational performance company where I'd do shows. I needed a CD player that would play a performance track then pause for the next track. I built a wireless trigger mechanism using the transmitter and receiver of a garage door opener, hooking the transmitter on my belt. It worked quite well. Thanks for the memories.

If you were wondering how the voice reduction system works, it relies on the lead singer generally being mastered in the middle, i.e. the same on both sides in the stereo recording. When you subtract one channel from the other, you end up with a mono sound signal with the lead singer removed. That's why some vocals which are mastered differently still come through. It may do some additional filtering, to reduce the frequencies of human speech, but then again it might not. It works without it. Since you lose some information with lossy compression, this technique works somewhat less reliably with MP3 files. A similar thing happens when the ground contact on a headphone port is broken.

I hope your eyes grace this comment. I am now the proud owner of two of these machines. A couple things you didn't mention is that they run a bit hot. There is a quirk where if you plug in a bluetooth audio adapter to the phones jack there will be a bit of noise in the audio interference in the signal. I put a coiled wire over the adapter and the sound went away. It make me nervous that it would melt or warp my CD's but I've been using them for a few weeks now. Audio will also play out of the speaker with said adapter unless you switch the speaker off (a godsend that you can do that). It does not do this when driving headphones. My guess is because of the low energy feature of Bluetooth itself that it was putting out an audio signal to it, but the player was expecting a higher output to the jack and it did not cut the feed to the speaker. The speaker audio stops with regular headphones. There is a bit of a difference in audio quality when switching it from CD to LINE OUT. The audio sounds much more full when set to LINE OUT with headphones plugged in. The built in Preamp is wild. I have to have the volume set to minimum with my Sony WXM4's plugged in. When on low volume, there is lower volume output on the right channel. When the volume is bumped up a millimeter the audio fixes itself. This device is fully capable of driving some high impedance headphones for sure. Though the portable CD players I have produce a richer sound with their built in DACs. The lows, mids and treble overall sound better with my Sony D-NF601 and D-NF430 players even when tweaking the equalizer dials. Which is understandable given the use case of the machine; it's no audiofile device. But as a home player, it's the best I've experienced out of the few I've had in the past. Took a couple of years to find one in excellent condition. A few days after the first one arrived. Another went up for auction with me being the only bidder. I have not owned a better CD player in my life. Thank you for reviewing this wonderful player, I most definitely will use the CD record option sometime in the future. Edit: The audio issue is with how the XM4 handles the audio. Regular headphones such as earpods and B&W P3 headphones do not have this issue. The XM4's just do not play well with the PSD300. I have no audio issues with other devices with these headphones. I guess they're too modern for the player itself.

This video came just in the perfect amount of time because a few days ago I was documenting myself about these portable units including the Marantz one and I was experimenting with burning a CD with CD-Text and was succesful in getting it to work inside the car CD player. Keep up the good work. Cheers :)

The reason you did not see more music CD’s with the CD-Text feature on them was that the feature was patented and their was a licensing fee, both for the hardware manufacturers and for the record companies. Many record companies simply didn’t want to pay the fee to include it on their CD’s, especially since not all CD players even supported the feature. This feature suffered a similar fate to that of the expansion bus standard that IBM tried to push as a successor to the ISA bus, MCA (Micro Channel Architecture). MCA failed because IBM patented it and required all PC manufacturers to license MCA if they wanted to include it in their computers. Despite various advantage it had over ISA, many computer companies balked at the licensing fees and instead went with free alternative standard like VESA Local Bus, EISA, and later PCI. By the mid nineties, IBM was forced to through in the towel. It’s a good lesson about how it’s best not to get greedy when it comes to a standard, especially if their are other acceptable options or the option of just leaving the feature out (as in CD-Text).

I think the VR works by inverting one of the stereo channels and mixing down to mono. Which is why the output goes mono when you use it. Doing that cancels out parts of the two signals that are the same in both channels - i.e. the sounds coming out in the centre of the stereo picture.

One thing to point out is that you will almost always find people asking far too much money for any given thing on eBay. I collect old roleplaying games, and I'd be in debt if I was paying what some folks are asking for classic titles. You've got to take your time and check often to get the best deals.

I used to have an early DVD player(massive thing) that had two mic inputs on the front and a sharp and flat button that'd effect the sound like that. You could plug in mics and talk or sing over whatever was playing on the player, I'm assuming it was for karaoke discs maybe?
@MarioManTV

sinformant I have a kids DVD player with two mic inputs as well. Now you've reminded me, these karaoke machines usually support the CD+G format, which was used almost exclusively to display song lyrics on an otherwise standard CD. Interesting bit of tech, in my opinion. It would be fascinating to find some other inventive uses that it might have had.

MarioMan crazy when I think of it that DVD player was like $200+ dollars and was still very basic, now days you can buy a bluray player with all kinds built in fancy stuff like apps and wifi for $50 and under. Hell I had a nice 3d bluray player I paid $60 for, that had all kinds of media streaming apps. But the new 4k bluray players are still too high priced for me to stomach.

Viewing this video caused me to go on ebay and purchase one of these. I got lucky, the unit I got is super clean and everything functions perfectly. Thanks Techmoan. Edit: For anyone who's interested, I found out that basically most CD's in jewel cases don't have text, but most CD's in a Digipak do have text. So, it seems they add text more often to the more modern CD's.
