Supertop Ultra Installation for Wrangler JKU

Pre-watching this video, then using it as the "installation guide" made installing the Supertop Ultra as easy as it could be. Really only used the included manual to verify the parts received to the list. It took right at 4 hours to complete the project, from unboxing to installing the rear window. Just a couple things as feedback for Bestop: (1) Why is the short center bolt on the door surrounds a 5 mm Hex head instead of the Torx 30 head the two longer bolts use? I will have to add a tool to my kit (that comes with the Jeep) for removing all the bolts as a result. (2) The two rubber grommets that go into Bow #6 to secure the quarter windows should come pre-installed. I would think a commercial grade adhesive would be a better option to secure them in place than super glue. It will take some getting used to having the "stack" along the tailgate as it cuts into the rear-view field of view and the frame running parallel up the roll bars. Other than these aesthetic issues; the quality of the top is outstanding, the windows provide crystal clear visibility, and it looks great on the Jeep!

I installed this top on my 2016 Jeep Rubicon. It's works and looks great. I did have some small hardware missing from the packet but was able to purchase the missing items locally and Extreme Terrain is securing me replacement hardware. At 31:52 in this video notice how the rear retainer snaps into the Jeep. At 32:03 notice how the retainer is NOT actually snapped into the Jeep and appears to to be quite a bit short of reaching the Jeep retainer pocket lol. This was a very tight fit on my top and only after 3 days of stretching in the hot sun was I able to snap the rear retainers and get the lower window retainer bar squarely seated. After a few practice cycles I am able to remove the windows and lower the top in 5 minutes and reverse the procedure in 10 minutes with no help from my partner. Highly recommend this top so pay up and have no buyers remorse!

Thanks for watching, Greg! Like you mentioned, those retainers might be very tight at first, but also are not essential to use the top. Sorry to hear that there was some hardware missing, but glad you are enjoying the top!

Torx or allen head screws instead of phillips would gave made the installation 200 times easier. Also, the instructiobs sometimes had different part numbers. Customer service was able to help, but they shouldnt have to. Installing using the instruction booklet alone would be near impossible. A revamp of the instructions, with images at the end of a step to show what it will look like would be worth its weight in gold. That being said, the installation was more tedious than difficult, and the top is a beauty.

I purchased a Supertop® Ultra™ Squareback Soft Top Jeep 2007-2018 Wrangler JK. This was not a cheap date. First off I will say that now that the installation is done, the top is great! It fits well, looks good, and is first-rate quality. However, like many Jeep owners, I live out in the boondocks. Pay $200 to have someone install it for me? Yes please! Nope, said Bestek. Nearest dealer willing to install it is 75 miles away and they don't intend to travel to me. The only option was to try to travel to them with two ginormous boxes (in a Jeep) or install it myself. I chose the latter. Right from the start it was a nightmare. The instruction sheet jumps around from page to page; it is not in order. The KZbin videos make it sound easy - it is not. Some part numbers written on the pages do not match part number stamped on the product. I suppose this is a testament to the quality but the parts are all so tightly engineered that screws and bolts have to be *just so* in order to screw in. According to the instructions, this is a 4-hour job. It took a week, and that was a week (working on it each day after my job) that the vehicle was unavailable to me. Do I recommend this product? Only if you have the exact right tools and a lot of time and know-how. Or if you happen to be lucky enough to live near one of the few places in the country that has agreed to work on them. I would add photos if I could. I also wish the hard tops (my first choice) were available but they weren't.

okay…obviously late coming to the video but holy hell. So I purchased this top and we installed everything exactly like the video says to do and when we get to step 15 the freaking levers don’t “click” and it won’t lock… so it won’t stay up and it was short reaching the front. after a while we got it to latch in the front but it’s still not clicking or locking. WHAT ARE WE DOING WRONG!

Had the same issue to the letter. Had to brute force it to lock into place with the two levers. After that, they clicked into place as they should. I had a really bad time with this install, not happy with Bestop at the moment.

I have some serious issues with Bestop on this one. I was missing 4 bolts that secure the lift assist. The bolts were not already on, nor where they in the packaging. Also, rear door surround. The “nut” that the torx bolt goes into is REALLY easy to spin/strip out of the plastic. The top would not lock into place. I had to brute force it to get the levers to click, and only then would it lock. For the amount of money this top cost me, I was/am pissed. I bought the Sunrider and had zero issues. This feels really janky except for the actual top itself. The twill is magnificent. The hardware surrounding it, terrible.

Mine came the same exact way. What did you do go buy bolts and nuts at Home Depot?

@@sneakypete4556 I did, but I also called Bestop and politely told them how unacceptable this was considering the cost. To their credit they sent new hardware and a new surround. The top has a lifetime warranty, so they should. Bestop also owns PRP seats, and I had an issue with the stitching and workmanship on one of my custom seat covers, which they replaced and made right. Long story short, they’ve made good on the issue that I’ve had with their products. Give them a call.

The screws don’t fit in the predrilled holes. 😢 My installation is not going smooth at all. I am trying to contact Bestop for help. What a mess.

I'm stuck at #3 and #4 as they didn't give me the same lifts or mounting bracket here, which inevitably means I don't have the same hardware. Has anyone run into this type of a situation where the lift arm has no mounted bolts to fit into the mounting bracket?

Yes, exact same issue. Had to go to the hardware store for the bolts as they were not included in the packaging either. 😑

@@neil12011 they sent the hardware for an older model that matches your instructions. There is a new instruction manual bottom left corner will say "Rev. D 0920" that matches the parts and they will have to send you the bolts.

Luv the top, but when you don’t get all the correct parts for the installation, you got talked to like a piece of crap and hung up on. Happened this week and I still don’t have shipping. Be very cautious with bestop.

Can I remove the side and rear curtains but run with the top up for sun protection?

Yes! That configuration is what we call "bikini mode". It can also be used with the sunrider open in that configuration. Hope this helps!

Regarding section 3 - If I remove the soft cover for the winter and go back to the hardtop do I have to remove these outer brackets or can they be left on?

Hi, Rich! Yes, the brackets that are mounted to the roll bars can be left on if you want to install a hardtop. Much of the rest of the top will need to be removed though. I'd say it will take 30-60 min to remove for a hardtop installation.

In Section 3 what did you to with the flap that was covering the bolts? When you first put the pivot bracket in place it looked like you folded it back, leaving the inside of the sport bar and cover exposed. However, when you installed the screws, it was clearly no longer folder back and looked much cleaner. What did you do...cut holes in the sport bar cover, fold the flap inward, leaving a gap, or what?

Yes, for the cleanest appearance, you will need to make two small slits in the sport bar when installing the brackets at 6:58. Thanks for asking!

After folding the top back in either position is it necessary to tie down anything while driving to prevent the top from flopping around?

Hi! No, there is no need to use any sort of tie down. It will move around a little in the fully retracted position when going over bumps but it is nothing to be concerned about.
