Supertramp is Roger Hodgson & Rick Davies. Both are singers, songwriters and keyboardplayers. So there are often two voices and always lots of keys. This album is their prog masterpiece and Breakfast in America is their commercial masterwork.

I love the songs where they "talk" back and forth to one another. To me it's their signature effect, and it's rather uncommon in other bands.

Great tune by Supertramp. The more that you hear them, the more that you realize how so far ahead of the curve they were in the Prog rock genre. I definitely heard the early Elton vibes with the piano and string and the buildup. Great reaction La and Che!

And like a lot of really amazing pans, they've got multiple members that can effectively do lead vocals and everybody can do fantastic Harmony vocals. 15p is 15 pence (pennies), or £0.15 (pounds), or £3.00 a packet of 20, pretty sure it would have been about £1 a packet in those days. Even now its not £15 for a cig!

I saw Supertramp in concert when I was 18 and this song hit particularly hard live. I didn’t expect it, but WHAM…I got rocked. Prior to that, I wouldn’t have called it filler but just not as gripping to me as a lot of their other songs. It changed that day.

As with these prog type bands, and for the era of these musicians, the entire album is meant to be listened in its entirety. This song is a welcome “breather” in the midst of some other more energetic compositions. It’s its own gem in that it ties in with the theme of the album. Such a pleasurable album to listen to!

Consider hearing "Try Again", off of the first album. The album wasn't much to talk about. Not for me. "Try Again" wasn't played on the radio. But you hear this song and think, OK, this is the first time the great arrangement potential revealed itself. I think at that time they had a different woodwinds guy. This song has flute. As I recall, it's a long song... so I hope that's OK. It's not as incredible as some of these masterpieces that you have heard, but it's quite unique and I loved it the first time I heard it.

Actually, you are both correct. This song and Elton's song "Madman Across The Water" explore similar territory both lyrically and musically. And they were recorded within roughly a year of each other. So in that sense, they are bound to share at least one momentary vibe. But aside from that, they are each their own singular artistic vision. And both are remarkable achievements.

Pretty much anything from Crime Of The Century and Even In The Quietest Moments will never disappoint. Breakfast In America was their huge breakthrough but, to me, those previous albums were Supertramp at their best. I find it interesting that you would hear an Elton John vibe to the opening section. In 1969, before auditioning for the band that would become Supertramp, Roger Hodgson released a single on the Island label under the band name Argosy. He wrote both sides and each sounds so much like his style. The backing studio musicians were Caleb Quaye, Nigel Olsson, and Reginald Dwight. Dwight would change his name in a few months to Elton John. So there is a connection between Supertramp and Elton John. That said, it's also that this style of piano playing is indicative of the sound for many UK keys musicians from this period.

I'd have thought you'd have something to say about the drums, specifically. Pretty rare in 1975 for drums to be mic'd and produced that way, I mean, THAT massive, considering that this isn't heavy metal or even hard rock. Some might say the whole track, or the whole album (or all of Supertramp's output) was over-produced, but little details always made the difference for me as a 14yr old fan back then, like the attack on the organ when it comes in at 01:47, or the triangle/tiny bells at 03:28.

They didn't include the strings until this song. The songs on the other side were on the B-side and, in most cases, they were considered experimental or throw away crap. So, way back in the day, this song was the conclusion. The same was the case of "The Grest Gig in the Sky" on the album "Dark Side of the Moon."
