Honestly, the most important thing to consider when applying is your own sanity. Take a few deep breaths, try and find your calm spot, and remember that whatever happens will happen. I feel the calmest when flying and in airports (weird ik), so I literally booked a round trip ticket from Pennsylvania to Utah just so I could clear my mind and write! First draft and after showing it to teachers and friends I decided it was what I wanted it to be and submitted. CORRECTION! We discovered that our data for Harvard appears to have mistakenly included about 349 deferrals from previous admissions cycles. The REA admit rate is still 7.4%, but the regular decision admit rate is 2.6%, and the total admit rate is 3.4%. The chart in our blog is updated to reflect the corrected numbers. I am a senior in high school, and I want to apply early decision to Boston University (I'm out of state). I have a 4.2 something weighted GPA and a 3.9 or 3.7 unweighted GPA. I have taken 7 APs and six honors, and for my senior year I will take 4 or 5 APs. I have led a few clubs such as a book club 10th grade, the computer science club in 11th and 12th grade, and two different ministry activities. I also won second and fifth place in two science Olympiad competitions (but I am majoring in psych). I want to submit my application as "test optional" since I didn't get a good score, and I was wondering if being test optional would hurt my chances at all, and if you think I have a decent chance of being accepted, and if you have any tips to better my chances. Thank you so much for your time, your videos are so helpful. Have a good day!

First video who understands the difference between stats and probabilities. At our school, 10 kids applied ED to Dartmouth and only 2 got in. But 6 of those who didn’t get in had an SAT less than 1450 and a GPA less than 3.3 So really depends on where you are. Your probability could be zero or 50%.

This is true-- it was in my notes and probably even in one of the takes but didn't make the final cut for whatever reason-- this is mixed in w/ the alumni weight in early rounds. But the story is the same. EA /REA / ED isn't the advantage many think it is.

As someone who is always super last minute and procrastinates like crazy, I'm sitting here still writing my Columbia application Frankly I hate my common app essay and I have not written my supplements. My stats and activities are pretty good but I am terrible at writing essays in general. I don't know whether if my essay will be better in RD. Should I apply?
@allaboutroy73992 жыл бұрын
Maybe you should do RD. Your supplemental essays need time to become their best version!
@baxterbotox76612 жыл бұрын
Apply RD. Even if we assume your common app essay is good (unlikely if you don't like it), I doubt you can write all the supplementals for Columbia well in one day unless you're a great writer. And the vast majority of high school students are not great writers.

@emox64002 жыл бұрын
There's more to this, though. Colleges can raise their yield rates while lowering overall acceptance rates by taking half their new class from the ED pool, though it's much much smaller. Almost anyone's chances are higher if they apply ED (binding). But of course, having your application polished is a given.
@jeoboden2 жыл бұрын
good topic, i totally misunderstood this. a more thorough explanation of upward trend grades would be helpful too. thanks

If you had a LOT of B's freshman year. A's and a couple b's sophomore/junior year as available. School had no grades for part of COVID or totally inflated grades or something so you don't stand out much, but you're legit getting straight As now. Even in this case though, it's not ALWAYS bad to apply early-- if a school has more than 2x probability of early admissions it's probably still ok esp ED as they know you're sold on their school then and you may up your chances still. Sometimes the strategy is case-by-case according to the school, its stats, and how many students it historically "defers" vs. rejects. If you can just get to deferred it doesn't matter much.
@harrychu6509 ай бұрын
Admissions rates are higher during early action b/c that is when the university admits the athletes, children of faculty, donors insiders, and friends of the Dean. Now with test optional, there is no disincentive for them to limit the percentage of these special interest applicants. In the past, their test scores would damage the university's profile if their are too many of them.

Please don't have regrets!! In terms of tests etc. if you can just get deferred instead of rejected you will still have a chance. Likewise, my hope is that you understand that MORE STUDENTS GET INTO A GREAT SCHOOL DURING REGULAR ADMISSIONS than get in early. Every year I have students get in somewhere great during regular admissions as often as I have equally qualified students getting in early. I'm just trying to debunk the myth that you must do early or else!! If your last ACT was better, LET THE SCHOOL KNOW as soon as your score drops! They may very well still take it into consideration.
