Hello, I am applying to a school a second time. My application has an essay prompt regarding reflection on experiences and personal development since my last application. (50 to 250 words) I was thinking about discussing that when I last applied my school had not ranked me in relation to my graduating class yet, I was the Valedictorian. The school really cares about student ranking and my school did not rank students unless they got the Valedictorian or Salutatorian ranks. I want to discuss this topic and how it gauges how I performed against others in a similar environment that being my high school. In addition to this I wanted to discuss my preferences for smaller classes which I have become aware of as of coming to a big college. I want smaller classes much like at smaller liberal universities because it is easier to get ahold of professors, ask questions, and make connections with other students as they not always sitting in different spots. I also thought I would discuss experience I have gained while working as intern in the summer and how I learned to work well with supervisors and co-workers, therefore developing communication skills.

As someone who is writing this from his Ivy’s dorm; I have met people who are pilots here, people who worked with high ranking government officials and then people who are just passionate about baking or coffee. We all share great test scores and grades, but it’s also such a huge lottery and it depends so much on how the admissions office is feeling. Good luck!

The one big thing not mentioned is being able to pay full tuition. The schools all deny it-- but the reality is that the schools have to have a certain percentage of every class, who are willing to pay full tuition. Yes, even though the Ivies have massive endowments, even they can't afford to pay every students tuition, or even help every student.

I am from novosibirsk and i did 1600 on SAT. 800 physics and math level 2 800, acto score 35 I did reading club at school and agriculture i had few people in my clubs. But i did right. Unfortunately, for international students the wow factor is much different than it is for US students. In my country (at least where I'm from) clubs and stuff are practically unheard of, and in school activities only include the occasional functions and stuff like that. Most of my activities are outside of school, and even though I do have three national level activities and a couple of international level awards, they're not team activities and hence I don't have a lot of leadership positions :(

Little Billy just turned 8. His parents went all out for the party. They rented a bounce house. The cake was three layers. They even hired the best clown in the state. All of Billy's friends from school were there, even some of the older cool kids made it. At the end of the party, when everyone left, Billy's father gave him one last gift It was wrapped up in a large box. Billy opened the box up and inside was a slightly smaller box. Written on the box was "Open me on your 80th birthday." Billy's dad, who has a big grin on his face, said "I guess you'll just have to wait." Later that night, Billy barely got any sleep as he pondered whether or not to open the box anyway. It took a great amount of restraint, but he decided not to open the box. Five years later, Billy was celebrating his 13th birthday. He'd reached a milestone and that year had been quite eventful. He was growing up, noticing girls. His parents got divorced. It was a mutual decision, and they both told him that it wasn't his fault. His mother, however, still felt the need to over-compensate on his birthday. She managed to reserve Billy's favorite arcade for him and his friends. Overall, he had a great day, but later that night, he remembered his dad's gift. He had it stashed away in the closet. He pulled the box out to open it up, but looked at those words on the box that said "Open me on your 80th birthday". Billy contemplated opening the box up anyway. He figured he waited long enough, but ultimately, he chose not to open the box, and put it back in the closet. Another five years passed, and Billy was turning 18. This year we also eventful. His parents reconciled. He had a girlfriend. He was starting college after the summer. He didn't need anything this year, and yet his parents surprised him with a brand new car. He was as happy as can be. Still in the corner of his mind, however, was the gift he received from his father ten years ago. Later that year, when he was packing things up for college, he came across the box that read "Open me on your 80th birthday." Surely it would be okay enough to open now, wouldn't it?" Billy held the box in his hands for a good five minutes before deciding to pack it away without opening it. Many years passed, and Billy, who was now going by Will, was turning 36. He got married, started a family and finally finished school, earning his PhD. Alas, his father passed away that same year. So it wasn't all good news. Will couldn't help but think about that box. He held onto it all these years. Still written on the box was "Open me on your 80th birthday." His father passed. He could open the box now, right?" In the end, he couldn't bring himself to do it. He wanted to respect his father's wishes. Nearly 50 years passed, and Will had lived quite a life. After earning his doctorate, he began teaching at the same ivy league school here graduated from. His children grew up, followed in his footsteps and had kids of their own. He'd lived a long life. His wife, however, passed the previous year. And Will knew he wouldn't last much longer. His 80th birthday arrived. And even in his advanced age, he never forgot the spot of the box his father gave him decades ago. He kept it so long. Every birthday was a constant reminder. He wanted to know what was inside. But the very movement he grabbed the box, he became overwhelmed with excitement and suffered a heart attack before he could even open the box. I bet you're thinking that's where the story ends, right? Well it isn't. Minutes later, the housekeeper found Will on the ground with the box in his hands. She was going to immediately call an ambulance, but here curiosity got the best of her. Written on the box was "Open me on your 80th birthday." She removed the lid from the box. Inside, bound but a paper clip, was eight $1 bills and a small note, which the housekeeper read aloud to herself. "I knew you wouldn't be able to wait. Happy 8th birthday, Billy."

This is a very interesting video. It would be quite cool if you could give some concrete examples of the 'Wow' factor. The High School activities and the Edge is kind of self explanatory, but the 'wow' is a lot more difficult to quantify.

Our daughter found her wow factor/edge in languages. She'll finish high school with Latin 3, Spanish 5, Mandarin 5, a senior independent study she created in conversational Cantonese, a full scholarship for a month of immersive Spanish in Spain. We'll see if it's enough or not... She refuses to apply to all Ivy's though. We even visited all 8 + other colleges in between last month. She's thoroughly uninspired by Harvard & not interested in applying to schools she doesn't feel are a fit just because they're an Ivy. Dartmouth, Yale, Princeton made the application list, along with Stanford (REA), Duke (Robertson), Vandy, Tufts, UNC (Morehead Cain), UVA, Ohio State, Ole Miss (Chinese Flagship School & safety), & Auburn (Safety). UChicago & MIT are under consideration (she wants to study BioEngineering)

Daughters don't use any social media & little YT, but I've followed the Dartmouth KZbinrs since we started researching schools, sharing some videos with the family & we love everything we see about Dartmouth except the distance from home :( & the cold. The outdoors programs, the organic farm, the culture, the town, not being in the South, all make the academics that much more interesting to our daughter. She doesn't want to apply to any binding ED's so will apply to Dartmouth RD

Other things can also count, such as things you have done with organizations outside of your school, interesting hobbies that you have explored, even family responsibilities. Also, talk about how your school does not have extracurricular activities to show them your situation. Admissions officers are critical but they’re not heartless. If they know your situation, they will factor that into your application.

To be honest, you are fricked. BUT if you play your cards right, there are chances that you will get accepted into like one-several of the top 50 unis. The ivies might be out of your league (doesn't mean not to apply to them. If you really want to go to the US then focus on something less demanding than the ivies and focus on like the UCs) but there are plenty others and like @AsPooNFulofSuGar said, the AO aren't heartless and by when I said play your cards right I mean, by reviewing your essays and making sure you can't improv them and a little advice, if you have the time then just prepare yourself for the interviews. Like if the interviewer asked "Why are your extracurriculars so empty?", talk about your situation and tell them about family responsibilities. Everything takes time, when others were doing their ECs you would have been doing something else. Those will be your ECs. It can be anything like babysitting your sibling to washing dishes. Just make sure your essay doesn't make them forget about you. Like after 1-2 days of reading your essay it should still be there in their mind.

I don’t think so. Colleges generally look at how many AP clases you took compared to how many are offered. Also, the AP classes available at your school are out of your control so I wouldn’t worry so much.

Yes it's a rough statistical estimate-- as if all admissions rates were independent probabilities and as if admissions decisions were random. In fact they probably cluster, and probabilities vary wildly depending on a student's actual qualifications (i.e. a kid with a less attractive application is not going to have odds that high-- one with a wow factor and an edge is going to have higher odds and suck up more admissions) and I would imagine actual overall admission rate is lower than the 35%-- but at least it gives an idea of what happens when you just throw more lottery tickets in the basket.

I am planning on going the pre-med route in college. I really want study undergrad at an ivy too though (or honestly any top/ elite school). So I was planning on focusing a lot on my extracurricular’s/honors/awards next year (sophomore year) so I don’t know if I could balance that with the 3 AP’s that I am planning on taking. But the AP’s are extremely easy though (in my opinion). The only extracurricular’s that I have right now is Varsity Track & Field and I think HOSA (i don’t really even know if I am apart of HOSA 💀)

Your statistical calculation at the start of the video is incorrect because the probability of admission into each individual school is not independent of your chance of getting into another school. Some people may get into all 8. Others will have 0% chance even if they applied to all 50 top schools.

Hello, thank you for your channel. It has taught me so much. I have a question: Should I transfer to another high school? I am currently at an early college, it is a brand new school (no track record of where students matriculates) and we are the first class of students. It is an amazing school and I can get certifications and a great education in computer science. However, with the heavy load on CS courses, they do not offer higher math, no physics, only 2 years of Spanish and only AP classes in history. Most colleges for engineer requires/prefers to see that applicants took physics, math at a higher level, atleast AP Cal AB and BC and at least 3 years of world language. My question is, should I transfer to another school that offers the wide variety of courses? or stay at my current school? Your advice is greatly appreciated.

I volunteered at an organisation and have given out over 20000 health kits over 1 1/2 years. I also am in the top 1000 players in the entire oceanic region of a very popular video-game and won quite a few tournaments and help a community of 1000 people by watching them play and giving them advice. Should I apply and include the video-game activity and will I have a decent chance? I had a severe illness during 9th grade so my gpa is around 3.7 or 3.6 because of that

Nooooo don't include the video game thing unless you wanna go into video game development or something. It's gonna make your chances of getting in a lot less. There's a video of a former Stanford admissions officer reviewing hypothetical applications. One of them mentioned their rank in some video game. They were a brilliant student, but the moment the video game part came up the admissions officer became visibly less enthusiastic about the applicant. My advice would be to NOT include it in your activities list. Instead, write about it in a supplement essay. That'll go far to boost your application because the supplement essay is an opportunity to showcase your personality and likes and dislikes, and if it's something you love them writing about it in a supplement essay will be a very good idea. @@brokensushi4427 no I mean the supplement essay prompts for different colleges. I still don't think it's a good idea to include it as an activity, unless you're gonna be a developer or smth. I don't mean to say that playing video games is bad or that being a gamer/streamer is bad. The entertainment industry is very important, and that includes streamers and gamers. But at the same time it's very common for gamers and streamers to drop out of college to pursue gaming full time, so the college you're applying to might have some reservations about you. Again, I don't mean to offend at all, I think it's really cool that you're playing at that advanced level. But if your major isn't something like game design/development/CS, I would advise against mentioning gaming as a major commitment. You can write about it in an essay/additional question as a way to show that you excel at everything you do, but try not to make it the central part of your app.

You can apply to multiple schools in early action. Even if you apply early decision somewhere you can apply to other schools in early action. If you get into your ED school you'll have to withdraw your other applications though. But if you apply REA somewhere you can't apply early anywhere else, either ED or EA.
