Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot was once a child of a wealthy family that was bullied due to his short height, obese figure and bird-like nose. Often taunted, he had no friends, and instead flocked to the company of birds. Eventually, he inherited his family’s fortune and adopted the Penguin moniker. In turn, he began presenting himself as an intelligent, rich and sophisticated gentleman in a tuxedo. Behind the façade, he had become angry at the world, due to never having felt accepted. As a result, he took up crime as a means for gaining power and taking revenge on citizens of Gotham who had dared sneer at his appearance. Love the Penguin and always did; comedic or otherwise (Devito's portrayal is too much for me though). He doesn't really seem to be as popular as some other Batman villains--sure, he's well-known, but people haven't seemed to have paid as much attention to him. Real shame because going off of this backstory/what the comics expand upon it, there's plenty of pathos to him. At least Gotham seems to be giving him some credit, albeit with a different backstory (Robin Lord-Taylor is the bomb by the way).

Paige Hankins Yeah danys version is way too inaccurate. Gotham is definitely the best version and most accurate to the penguin. The 60s penguin is sort of similar to the penguin in his early days and penguin triumphant which is a final appearance of the classic white collar criminal mastermind penguin. The most popular penguin is the one in the animated series/films and arkham games where he is a mob boss like the godfather or the kingpin with the iceberg loungs like in the comic book the penguin returns. Also the one from the comic penguin pain and prejudice is a popular one similar to gotham. I really enjoy the penguin on gotham. They do a very good job showing all the best stuff of the penguin. How he is a gray villian not good or bad and very unpredictable like loki from marvel. He also is master manipulater and always has a plan up his sleeve. The penguin is a way better character than the joker that hasnt gotten enough attention for a long time untill now with gotham. His character just has so many things about him which makes him a way better character than the joker. The penguin and the riddler are my top 2 favorite batman villians

Gotham doesn't really feel like a Batman show to me because: 1) No Batman (Bruce Wayne as a kid doesn't count) 2) The villains don't really look like traditional Batman villains Also, if Gotham is a prequel to the Nolan movies, why doesn't it take place in the past? I think the cool thing about The Penguin is that he's not just a Batman villain, he's a Bruce Wayne villain. Both Wayne and Cobblepot are Gotham's favourite sons, but while Wayne uses his fortune to help the needy and vulnerable, Cobblepot only cares for enriching himself. But at the same time, Cobblepot has that inferiority complex, due to being unattractive and not well liked. He wants to be feared, but he also wants to be loved. He looks at somebody like Bruce Wayne, who represents everything that he is not, and he resents him.

Penguin is always a personal favorite because he usually wouldn't get caught easily, not to mention he was always able to slip in and out. Though in the latest Gotham's Penguin, he is much more devious and also calculating, he doesn't appear as super villain, but more the factor of his situation. One thing I do remember that the Penguin was often times much more than his mother's child, he was also shunned by his father due to some family issues

Eric Coldfire If it was not for Tim Burton writing the story of Batman Returns the movie would have been a 2 hour long episode of the Adam West show from the 1960s with The Penguin and Catwoman going on a treasure hunt under Wayne Manor and yes that was the original script for Batman Returns which thank God that Tim Burton scrapped that story and wrote a new script for Batman Returns and yes some elements of the original script of Batman Returns found it's way in Joel Schumacher's Batman Forever with Two Face and The Riddler going to Wayne Manor and trashing the Batcave

If the Penguin was an informant for Batman, why didn't he change his name to the "Stool Pigeon". LOL! I like Danny DeVito's portrayal of the Penguin. In one episode of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" where Frank Reynolds(DeVito) was hosting a children's pageant and he resembled the Penguin character after a mortician did his makeup. DeVito also did this to his portrayal in "One Flew Over the Coo Koo's Nest" in the IASIP series.

Chester Oswald Cobblepot must have felt sad and lonely because people gave him no respect for his weird appearance and that really made him mad. In reality, people were jealous of him having a bird-like nose, being fat, and having a short height. Taking a life of crime was not the right move Oswald Cobblepot did, but it made us feel sorry for the many who had a troubled life.

I love the fact that the Penguin wears his monocle, even in the midst of martial arts bouts. That takes some skill.....

I personally prefer the Penguin from the comics and the movies over Gotham's version. It's not that I don't like Gotham's version, I do enjoy it but I love the Penguin who is overweight, short and not really handsome but classy. I also dont know much of Gotham, just started it (but yes it's good) and I kinda grew up with the old chubby Ozzy with his odd love for birds. Guess I'm one of a few who likes the comic version better xD But that's cool. Love&hugs :)

Nice. I recognize the Iceberg Lounge from some of the penquin fiction I liked. That kind of presented him a Card Shark Bond villain. And also from the "Mystery of the batwoman" animated movie. To bad with all the different interpretaions penguin rarely gets to this point in his profile. Nice work.

They didn't originally. The "torturous childhood" aspect was retconned into most Batman villains' origins in the 1990's and early 2000's to make them more interesting.

Okay so in Gotham Nygma got Penguin's origin, and penguin got custom origin, which means Ed really got changed by Ozzie in more ways than he could imagine. Breaking forth wall, well done, Gotham.

What makes Penguin unique is that unlike majority of Batman's villains who are insane such as Joker, Two-Face, Scarecrow etc, Penguin is probably the sanest.

The Batman (2004) Penguin looked similar to Danny Devito’s, however He had orange hair and voiced by the Great Tom Kenny, Who went to continuing playing Penguin onward and onward, which I really loved
