You’re right, it can be very difficult to handle - thats why i use two hands when placing or removing mine from the bath tub.

It is not widely reported but after the bridge strike. There was a pause and the a voice came over the loud speaker, “OOPS MY BAD” and shortly after a large duffle bag full of cash was launched up onto the bridge. And the boat continued on its way

Being a tug boat captain myself, it is sometimes hard to sea what currents are being produced by tractor tugs under the surface. Difficult situation especially when it's getting dark or at night.

I’ve Owned A Couple Of Boats…But More Importantly I’ve Captained Yachts From South Florida To Every Island Down The Caribbean Chain To Venezuela and Back Up All The Way Up The Eastern Seaboard Of The USA To Maine & Back…As Well As Worked As A Factory Yacht Captain For 5 Shipyards In Italy And I’ve Captained All Over The Mediterranean…I’m Also A North Sea Certified Commercial Oil Rig Diver Who Knows Quite A Bit About Bridge Construction, Maintenance, & Bridge Destruction When Deemed Appropriate.

Are boats required to have their AIS turned on and working? If so, wouldn't the tanker be at fault then?

They should have their AIS working but the Collision Regulations stipulate a sharp lookout must be kept at all times and relying on electronic equipment like AIS or radar may be useful but should not be relied upon.

@@jack-neens if the vessel is over 500GT or 300GT on international voyages it is required, the boat that sunk certainly looks like it should have had AIS operating. However the responsibility of every ships master if to ensure a keen lookout is maintained at all times. The tanker is non-compliant for not having AIS but the main purpose of AIS is vessel identification rather than collision avoidance- that depends more on visual bearings and ARPA (radar). I haven’t read the MAIB report on the incident but eSyesman says it mentioned both vessels were deficient in their watch keeping so potentially both culpable. Depending on the manoeuvres one of the vessels may be deemed to be at greater fault than the other.

The AIS should have been functional but I’m surprised the yachts radar didn’t pick it up? My Huminbird radar on our 38’ ChrisCraft will pick up a jet ski.

We ran a 54 foot pontoon on the Mississippi and Yazoo rivers for 12 years. The thrusters on the big passenger river boats threw us on shore multiple times. The city's dock was also damaged often.

Fort Lauderdale in Miami area can be tricky because of wind currents and tides which can get intense contrary wins. Contrary tides can be difficult to manipulate even with thrusters. I’ve seen many skippers struggle to handle the boat. what I do is back out, reassess the situation and look for another place to land or dock boat

in both situations the captain is at fault… perhaps the crew should go after the licensed skipper … yes the staff should receive pay and medical but to blame the owner is a bit unfair… I skipper my own sailboat … the buck stops with me … it would be nice info to mention the licensed captain of both instances … #accountability

In the video heard him cut the engines. I was wondering why he didn't go under the bridge to the right farther away from all that gushing water. It is sorta like a small plane taking off after a big plane. And you need to wait for a minute.
