Got be a bit of a boat nerd to enjoy bunkering procedures! Little surprised you don't have a ball valve at the connection on the yacht side, to prevent fuel coming out at severe roll angles. Also surprised that you don't a have locks on it. We had a new engineer miscalculate the fuel needed for our Cutter and the excess fuel puked out of the dipping hole in front of the Captains cabin and down into the forward cabins. He was not popular for that trip as we spent much of it removing fuel oil and scrubbing everything.

What was the point of the "drip sample". What is it for, what do you do with it, and why is it important?
@ethandoyle81825 жыл бұрын
suppliers often try and cheat you of fuel so they may supply diesel at the start then change to another fluid (may not even be a fuel could be water) so the drip test is done over the course of the bunkering operation. it is important so you know you are getting what you paid for. typically you would not run this fuel until the test results came back. source: I am a marine engineer on cargo vessels
@d_o_u_g_h_n_u_t80635 жыл бұрын
In the commercial industry, the drip sample is used to take a total sample of the fuel bunkers. From the sample 4 bottles are filled for: 1. The ship 2. The bunker supplier 3. The ship operator/company 4. Lab analysis. The fuel is tested for bacteria and water content. The fuel will always contain water however, this is usually very very minimal. This is done to check the quality of the fuel and whether or not it is suitable for use. If the fuel was rejected by the lab. The fuel would then have to pumped out and the tank would have to be cleaned. Very time consuming and expensive. Very interesting to see how a yacht performs bunkering, compared to commercial vessels.

When I was in Engineering in the Navy I would test the fuel from the receiving station and then when it passed my fuel test I would inform the EOW who would then allow the fueling to commence. I always erred on the cautious side and never had a bad batch of fuel on board. I also ran my purifiers whenever I topped up my day tanks so that I did not have problems with my filters. By the way, the best fuel and the cleanest fuel I ever received was in Japan. The fuel slip supervisor was on board verifying my tests and if they did not meet his requirements he made his crew re-clean the fuel and then we tested it again.
@erikb88775 жыл бұрын
Dale Johnson when you say “purifiers” I’m curious what type. I have been a Chief Engineer for 20+ years. On my vessels I ran several centrifuges that was continuously cleaning the fuel and separating any water. That’s a cute fueling hose eh? I would be there for days if I had to fill my boat from those little trucks. I’m surprised to see a DOI.

@wilfdarr5 жыл бұрын
Ya, but a spill on an airport is not nearly the ecological disaster that a spill on the water is.
@evolutionCEO5 жыл бұрын
35 mins to pump 150 tonnes into a 777? Through a flexible tube? Into tanks in the wings? big heavy tanks in the wings? Tanks that would require the wings to bend in places and not in others instead of evenly along the whole wings length? Erk...disaster imminent. So these engines don''t create and maintain a steady vortex in over-unity then? The air, when forced into a strong enough vortex gets hot and drives itself. That's what we were taught at school. Kinda just sucks itself along...
@Kurskaja_Narodnaja_Respublika4 жыл бұрын
Boat people like to keep it complicated.
@carl87904 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say it's more complicated, it's less advanced. Aircraft refueling has the advantage of higher fuel pump rate speeds, through multiple feeds at each wing. This vessel here only has one feed at a much lower fpr/m. Very convenient. Sucks that due to safety regulations and practicality, refueling these vessels are tedious and slooow. But they don't required refueling that often and a good Captain never let the main fuel storage go below a certain mark, since it's less time consuming to fill it back up.

Dean Lewis I’m not sure about his process. I know our vessel we sample the fuel by using color cut to test if their is water and gauge the tanks of the bunker barge just to make sure there isn’t water in the fuel. Dirty fuel is a issue but hard to catch, that’s why we have 6 fuel filters. Water is the big issue, our water traps work but water in the tanks also creates algae blooms, had to get our tanks scrubbed last year due to it.
@paulskopic58445 жыл бұрын

@bas69835 жыл бұрын
Nope gasoil is normally not tested before bunkerking. Particels and water will be filtered out and when normal a gasoil grade is ordered it should be on spec for the engines they use. In that trading area there is no need to check pour point or cold filter plugging point. The sample taken is for marpol. To prove you’ve bunkered a compatible grade for the area in regards of sulpher contents.
