An alimony check provides cause for celebration in this musical short whose title plays off Dinner at Eight of the same year. Featuring stage actress Maude Odell as a stern but sympathetic landlady with a collection of colorful boarding house tenants, many of whom contribute to the evening’s entertainment - music, acrobatics and even magic - this was one in a series of 13 musical shorts produced by Mentone Productions for Universal Pictures. It showcases stars of radio fame including the Ponce Sisters, whose estate assisted with supporting the preservation of this film.-Staci Hogsett

Thank you for this! There are so few Universal shorts from the early '30s available, and many of them were produced by former Hal Roach Studios executive Warren Doane, using a lot of (former) Roach talent. This restoration looks and sounds wonderful, and it's great to have more footage of legendary banjo player Harry Reser. Thanks again!

Well if this is a typical example of a Universal short it is better they remain unseen. The only good part was the section with the song “Don’t Blame Me” the rest of the singers were mediocre at best 😂. By the way what is the name of the man who sang “Don’t Blame Me” ? He has a pleasant voice.

I am impressed with this restoration. I’d love to see some of the original footage you had to deal with. I assume it was quite damaged and torn in places. Your work honored the performers and behind the scenes creatives who pioneered in this early talkie. I am also relieved that you included subtleties of of the original film negative grain.

Why do you keep so much negative dirt in the restoration?

This was a photochemical restoration; extensive cleanup of dirt can be achieved via digital restoration which would have required much more funding.
