It was a time when there were no boundaries for creativity because art was more important than marketing. Today it would be very difficult to go see a producer with a 24 minutes opera-style song and convince him that there is some value in it. And unfortunately, the producer would be right to refuse

It kills me when the late great herd of bygone critics parroted the lame criticism that it was all 'pretentious.' The members of Genesis were (mostly) wealthy boarding school and art school teens, imaginative, inexperienced, well-educated, literary, intelligent, skilled, ambitious, naive, and eager to make their mark. Not one bit of what they did was pretending anything... it was who they were. They made no claims for themselves. What the critics were really saying is they were uncomfortable with the complexity and creativity, the weirdness, and they'd rather enforce the unwritten rules that rock be macho, not too smart, overemotional, simple, pedestrian, and working class.
@catfdljws4 жыл бұрын
Well, to a degree they were. But it also misses a key aspect of the British aesthetic. For the English, often the pretension IS the art form. Whether it was prog rock's early days, or The Wall film, or the crazed metaphors and massive scale of the 2012 Olympics opening ceremonies, or (related ot the Oscars), the attitudes that drove a film like Chariots of Fire. Pretension itself is part of the aesthetic. It wouldn't quite feel English if it wasn't there in some form.
@MrBajawillie4 жыл бұрын
The critics that thought it was pretentious, were taken for a ride.

Same critics that hated Rush, most Rolling Stone flunkies. I found that in my years of listening, to pay closer attention to groups and albums that the media had a penchant to trash for everything that they did. Often we the listener discovered early what the media either never did, for what reason remains a mystery to me, or took years to begrudgingly acknowledge genius as is in Genesis (and Rush).
@luciodellaporta72014 жыл бұрын
At that point Genesis was the best prog rock band ever period. The gran finale of the song is just bone chilling... there's an angel standing in the sun and Steve guitar answer to Peter lyrics is just amazing.. I also love how heavy Apocalypse is. Incredible how in those days Genesis was able to sound like a musical box inside an enchanted Forest or fierce and heavy like Zeppelin. I don't remember another long song so effective and well balanced like this one ... So yes Steve : you were in the best one at the time!!! Keep going Maestro

I thought for almost 50 years that the final guitar solo was the best you could get. Not a single note to be changed. And then, I saw the rendition on the Genesis revisited at Royal Albert Hall, and the lenghty guitar solo at the end of the show, so long and so gorgeous, and so moving. For weeks I couldn't help myself to go back and hear it, again and again, with goose bumps and tears in my eyes every time. A gift from heaven. Thanks, Steve, for all this beautiful music all along the years.

For me … well, not the opposite but: i always loved the piece but it felt like 'unfinished' for me personally. For me it always ended like an everyday pop song just fading out because we have no idea how to end it otherwise. I always felt like "it is fading out but there is still stuff going on, tension is still going on … wth … feels like a fragment" After watching that RAH rendition … wow … for me pers. the perfect stuff. And at the end: finish line reached, now all is written, all is said, i am missing nothing, now i can rest in piece. ;)

In addition… at the end… Nad's different tone of "there's an angel standing in the sun" and "This is the supper of the Mighty One" For **me** personally … it fits better in this feeling of being overwhelmed/stunned in that given situation (described by the text) combined with total surrender to the power of the 'scenery' … [if it makes any sense ;) ]

from the first time i heard this song, way back in the 70s, it's been my favorite Genesis song and every time the meme comes up on any social media platform asking what one song would you take to a deserted island...this song is my choice every time. and if that wasn't enough, the song will always hold a special place in my heart, for when my dad passed away back in 1989, i had the Reverend read these words at his memorial service... like the river joins the ocean as the germ in a seed grows we've finally been freed to get back Home there's an angel standing in the sun and he's crying in a loud voice this is the supper of the mighty one the Lord of Lords King of Kings has returned to lead his children Home to take them to the New Jerusalem

I was 14 years old when I baught my fist Genesis album. It was Genesis live. It started off with watchers of the sky, getem out by friday, the return of the giant hugweed and so on. It's was the first time I listend to Genesis. Thought these songs were awesome to listend too. Untell I bought foxtrot. Could get enough of suppers ready. But then years gone by, genesis started faiding out of me. That was in 1974. I'll be 60 next month. For some reasond now and for the last 3 months I been inspierd to listend to suppers ready. I nderstand the meaning behind it so clearly now. I seen genesis back in 1995, 96 but never had the houner to personaly see steve hacket perform. I also had the houners of seeing daved gilmour of pink floyd performe the bending of the strings of his guitar. But Steve on the other hand invented a way to keep the sound going longer while bending the guitar string. Before I depart from this planet, I would like to see steve hacket perform just ones. I first became aware of Genesis in 1973 right after, "Selling England by the Pound," cameout. My friends and I loved, " I Know What I Like in Your Wardrobe, " so when the band came through Michigan we caught their concert in Ann Arbor. Recreational drugs were mandatory before concerts in the early 70s, so unfortunately I ended up having no memory of the show. I still often regret missing out on what I'm sure was a great show. Fortunately, four years later I saw the Wind and Wuthering tour, (drug free, thank God), and have vivid memories of the show. Steve was striking with his black Les Paul and knee-high leather boots, especially when he marched in place during, "In That Quiet Earth". The awesome lighting provided by rows of airport runway high-voltage lights suspended above the stage. Phil belting out, "In the Cage," while surrounded by revolving columns of multi-colored lights. Tony revealing a hint of a smile while playing his ARP during the upbeat section of, "In That Quiet Earth". And of course, Phil standing majestically on a riser, draped in a white robe and bathed in bright white light while singing the finale of "Supper's Ready," as clouds of smoke bellowed across the stage. I've since listened to "Supper's Ready," hundreds of times and it always brings back memories of that incredible show. Of course, Steve left Genesis soon after that tour and I've never bought an album or seen a concert by them since.

I know this will be considered sacrilege to some, but the version on 'Second's Out' will always have more groove, power and the vocal from Phil remains one of his most powerful interpretations that he's ever recorded. the studio version always felt a bit detached from one link to the other. the live version somehow was able to meld these things together into a more powerful and comprehensive piece. I'm sure Chester's playing had a bit to do with it and maybe the fact that they were 4-5 years older when this was done. But the studio pales compared to the live. to my ears, anyway.
