Good idea on the adze, hadn't considered it. I'll need to get one now! I have a TWCA, and you're right, it can be a struggle to start the bowl. It also seems to have a bit more of a blunting effect than the later, smoother cuts when it's already shaped.

I'm a novice. Started using a gouge for the bowl. So far I love it.

Gouges are good but you can get in a bind. Some time you may want to carve without any workholding (camping, travel, etc.) Hook knives are more versatile, I don't know many people who rely on gouges to carve that don't need to use sandpaper to smooth the bowl after. Hook knives are good for finishing cuts and knife finishes too :~)

@@jones_trees_and_treen Very good points. I use a vice when I use the gouges. I am trying both approaches bc I see the merits of both. My tiny bent knife is dull and I have not learned to sharpen it correctly yet.

The twica cam seems to work less by lever effect than big diameter handle. Am I wrong ?

Depends on the type of cut you're using, but I think it's both. I definitely still find that the further out I hold it the more power I can generate with rotational type cuts.
