While Willows' performance of it was insane, this game also highlights what I hate most about Supcom (and which practically no other RTS has) - that you can turtle up even in a ridiculously tiny section of the map (he had like 1% of the map wtf) and STILL hit back at your opponents all the way across the map. That just should not be a thing imo. And it is only because of ONE weapon - artillery. Nukes can be defended from pretty easily, but artillery spam is just oppressive in this game. It really should be nerfed big.
@mikeg85642 жыл бұрын
@@ArawnOfAnnwn I don't think so, willow got very lucky. He was gifted everything he needed to pull this off. 1 Tele stike from comms or support comes would have ended him. I don't use the FAF mod, they didn't change it so you have the build trees of the other factions with the completion of the "Exp Resource gen"? You just ment to include, It was because he was gifted/capture a unit/factory of the other factions. The Aeon/Cybran or Aeon/UEF combo has always been a scary pairing. Matches just don't get to this lvl or last long enough to be this impressive =D Still been in a few matches where the AEON player has built another Exp Resource gen to gift to others with the same resaults. Still WillowWisp is making a name for themselves. I LOVE how it shows other how creative you can be in this game. Another reason SUPCOM is still the "KING of the hill" for RTS in my mind. If it was only updated with the UI of ZERO-K and better A.I and multicore support so large action net code wasn't the bottle neck it is currently. I'll say the gaming industry would have to put the crown on Supcom officially and say long live the KING =P

@@MacCosmic yes, of course he was gifted a Cybran engineer. However having a Paragon and pumping out vast numbers of Colossi and Czars is also a good way to end a game; in fact they were critical here to defending the tiny base, and the Czar can be a game ender due to air crash damage alone, plus the fact it can shoot anything, surface, subsurface, or air.

Nice to see Gyle pick this battle up and feature it. It's not quite as mega breath-taking as the previous Willowisp cast, but it's still an interesting and entertaining and nail biting battle. At roughly 40:40 you can see a big bank of TotallyNotARobot's T3 bombers making a pass up the left side of the map, looks like there was a large clump of them in a second wave to hit possibly after shields go down. Fullshare sent them just as they were touching the edge of WilloWisp's base, so they instead just parked up and waited for the ASFs to clean them up. Well played Willow, nicely done. Two critical errors that Team 2 made at the end of this game was, a) they didn't keep the strats back and accumulate enough of them for critical mass to overwhelm willows' shields. And b) the large contingent of navy hammering willows base had enough firepower to overwhelm willow's shields despite the hive assistance. What they needed to do was transfer control of navy to one player, get that player to hold fire for 5 seconds and then have all ships fire at the same time. On a side note, I would have placed all the salems to the south of Willow's corner island and then turned them into land walkers. The range on the salems would have hammered the bottom half of Willow's base and he had no T2 arty placed to the south of his base.

Great performance from Willow again could have been different if Team 2 had actually scouted nuke targets early on though.
@Shadesight2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, if those first two nukes had targeted not-Willow I think an earlier break-through could have succeeded. Robot *had* scouted the first Antinuke before launching, at least according to the replay, so I think it'd have made more sense to target Ice's shipyards, Super's main eco or yards (probably the yards, to make room for the following push), or Deltharra's starting island eco. If he'd done any of those, I think the increased earlier pressure might have cracked Super and Ice earlier, or collapsed Deltharra, and let Team 2 put enough pressure on Willow to prevent the paragon play from succeeding.

I think I said this on the last willow game, but I have the same take away this game. Stop nuking base's you know to have nuke defence, when there are perfectly decent naval targets to hit. if the moment they had nukes 2 of them would have been enough to give team 2 the naval supremacy they needed and the paragon would have never completed. I am of course arm chair commander here and probably would not rank very high but man when I got a nuke on a naval map I know a great place to put it. Right where the slow things that cant really move out the way are.
@Shadesight2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, when the first nuke launched Willow SMD *had* been scouted. I think any of the forward targets would have been better choices. Then, before the 3rd nuke - the one on Super - *Delth's* SMD had been scouted - making the 4th nuke an obvious throwaway. The known presence of BBs coming out of Super's yards would seem like a higher priority. I get TotallyNotARobot was also running the ASF squadron, but those three lost nukes gave Willow all the space to set up his macro-monster. Willow got Eye up in time to scout the launchers before the first nuke - Robot Eye went up just in time to see the Para start construction, about the same time nuke landed on Noble_Ice's shipyards (after he gave them to Super). That's what, 5 launches of difference on Eye coverage? 2 wasted against Willow, one on Super, one wasted on Delth, then one on the SW yards, right?
@DuxGalt2 жыл бұрын
@@Shadesight Yeah that sounds right. Having a great game is often not about being really good but rather having your opponent make dumb mistakes. I will again say though that I don't play ranked so I don't know how good I am comparatively and I'm sure most in here could beat me. There is so much going on in a game and often having team mates makes it harder because I personally find myself not worrying about some aspects of the battle or getting lasered in on a plan.
@Shadesight2 жыл бұрын
Oh, my rating is like, 300, so I'd absolutely be making the same mistakes - but I tend to target nukes more conservatively *specifically* because I expect antinuke defense if it hasn't been scouted. Better a suboptimal nuke than a wasted one. I also tend to be a more supportive player rather than a play-maker, because I know if I overextend I'mma get my head chopped off. I'll still push, but often on a salient to support an ally, either their defense or to help their attack. And you're absolutely right - these games, as in war, are often not about who screws up, but who screws up more and first, and those mistakes and outplays make for great content.

I am a bit torn on this play. On the one hand, it was a magnificent defense and turnabout. On the other, that it needed a turnabout is at least partly because WillowWisp mostly left his team to die while ecoing up, managing to make his eco and base unbeatable in the time it took for the enemy to grind through the teammates in front of him. It's still an impressive sight to see, but in mixed games like this I think it's more sporting to put the top rated players in the front positions.

I think the Nuke Defense reacted late in the top left corner because of the map. My guess is that because the nuke travelled off map in its approach and beginning of the descent, the Nuke defense didn't trigger because technically the incoming Nuke was "out of it's range" (being offmap). Thus when the nuke appeared on screen, midway or nearing the end of it's descent, it got shot down.

team 2 did good with the early domination and nuke spam, but the first 2 nukes not finding a target and getting defend did make the difference, the naval breaktrough would be faster and stronger, makes it harder to defend and this was a defence just on the edge of the blade, maybe better alpha strikes with the navy would brake the shield defence from nuke, because there was for some time 1 shield gen holding it with massiv support, but this takes always a bit of time to respond...it was a good match, epic

Team 2 panicked at the end there. If they'd granted control of all the navy to one player so they could focus shields down, they could have drilled through and done real damage. A strat bomber flying off the side of the map and coming back in isn't considered offmapping. Offmapping implies you manipulated the movements to stay off the map for a significant travel period. It's considered cheating because you can't detect it coming using any legal means. Your bomber just flying off the map and coming back in with a bomb isn't offmapping, because, if you were paying attention, you already saw it. They didn't get it off the map and travel to a different part of the map with it.

Yes and no .... but for this discussion, mostly yes. They start out as a single reclaim entity, but if any tree is *damaged* it breaks the cluster, and each tree becomes individual.
