Supreme Court upholds Louisiana voting map with new majority-Black district

The Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that Louisiana can use a newly-drawn House map that includes a second district with a majority of Black voters. The decision comes after a lower court recently called the map unconstitutional racial gerrymandering. CBS News congressional correspondent Nikole Killion has more.

Louisiana was originally sued because they only had 1 predominantly Black Congressional district even though Black people made up 1/3 of the state's population. They proposed this new map with 2 predominantly Black Congressional districts, but they got sued again. The state won the case and can use this new map with the 2 districts because one of the reasons for grouping people by district should be to group similar people, communities, and socio-economic groups together to amplify their Congressional impact.

What enforcement powers are there to make the lawmakers of thwt state follow the Supreme Court ruling? What if the lawmakers ignored the ruling and kept the old map? What would happen?

Why would the state not follow the Supreme Court ruling? They won this case. They had 1 Black district and got sued. Then they proposed a second Black district and got sued again. Now the court said they fixed the original problem that was challenged so they can actually move ahead.
