I have been aware of the gut-brain connection for 40 yrs. Glad that the younger generations are becoming more aware and enlightened on this. Poisons in pesticides in our foods, need to be addressed, as they kill the beneficial gut flora.

Study shows that vegans have the most diverse (i.e. best) gut bacteria. Other studies show that beans, grains and vegetables support good gut bacteria, while meat, eggs, dairy and junk food support bad gut bacteria. It's no surprise that other studies show that vegans as a group are the healthiest, in the US at least. Probiotics actually don't work very well. Prebiotics which is probiotics plus a bit of plant material was found to be more effective. Obviously the newly introduced good bacteria need to be fed plants. The most effective is to just eat plants.

Amazing content. I am 63yrs old and suffer from a number of eye issues including " dome maculopathy" as a result of being highly myopic. The interesting thing is that I was 43yrs when diagnosis with chronic ceoliac disease. It took me 3 years on a strict gf diet for my intestines to recover. Clearly, I am a classic case & proof that there is indeed a very strong connection between gut & eye health. Thank you so much for this very valuable information.

@nixdaddio definitely different for everyone, and different depending on geo location 🙂 from what I've learnt the western diet as a whole is full of inflammatory foods, high sugar, high wheat and dairy intake etc but back in the old days wheat and dairy were less processed so they weren't as bad, today they have higher amounts of pesticides used on wheat crops, higher amount of gluten proteins, and dairy is compromised from use of antibiotics in the cattle and what they feed the cattle (grains) because thats the cheaper easier option, all contributes etc, all this leads to gut dysbiosis and autoimmune diseases...then you've got the high levels of pollution and toxins in our modern world also causing us to have high levels of heavy metals in pur system like mercury that shouldn't be there, its just crazy!!

@@jmc8076I agree with you, some people process wheat just fine. The main problem is that in north america, wheat is sprayed with synthetic b vitamins. 30% of humanity has been found to have gene variations that impede methylation (conversion) of b vitamins and the synthetic ones are complicating this further. This affects dna transcription, digestion, ATP energy production, inflammation, neurotransmitters and more. The fix is relatively simple, to take methylated b vitamins (b9 methylfolate and b12 metgylcobalamin). Blood tests and dna tests viewed by genetically savvy doctors can help determine IF you or your loved ones are among the unlucky 30%.

Thank you very much for this video. As you gave me every answer, which I'm looking for almost 5 years. My home doctor thinks I am suffering from IBS, and for a few years, I have had problems in my joints After having chronic headaches and one day i lost my vision from right eye, my neurologist said, may be I suffered tiny stroke in brain. Today, I can connect the dots of all my problems to guts problems, which I'm suffering longest. Also, most of the time, if I get gut problems, then I feel uncomfortable in my eyes. In the hospital, my eye doctor said I have very dry eyes. So, thank you for such valuable information.

I just discovered your channel. Like what I hear, the fact that you’re open to the latest research in Microbiome and its relation to the brain and other parts of the body. Our gut is referred to as the second brain. I have a leg up on many people when it comes to Pre, Pro and Postbiotics. I’ve been reading, listening to doctor William Davis, cardiovascular surgeon and author of best sellers such as Super Gut, Undoctored and the Wheat Belly books. I’ve also followed Donna Schwenk who has a wonderful website and is one of the pioneers in cultured foods. Highly recommend both people. Donna is NOT a doctor but she lives, eats, and breathes cultured foods and is very knowledgeable. Bottom line don’t buy Probiotics, it’s a waste of money and time. EAT your Pre and Probiotics, period!

Years ago I was diagnosed with blepharitis. No cure, only treatment with eyelid scrub, warm compresses, and artifical tears. Well, the first two didn't help at all so I gave up on them. A few years later I was diagnosed with oral lichen planus and was told it's an autoimmune issue. Strangely, this New Year's day I began eating carnivore but could only stick with it for 45 days, even with taking digestive enzymes. So I swapped to Keto and eat low carb veggies, nuts, berries in addition to animal foods. My blepharitis got 80% better. I went from Thera Tears all day long to days where I don't need drops at all. I recently noticed the lace patches of oral lichen planus are gone too! My theory is by cutting junk foods and grains my diet is much less inflammatory. I began this lifestyle to lose weight (51 lbs gone) but the healing of my eyes and mouth are a wonderful bonus. I will never stop eating this way. I still take digestive enzymes and occasionally a real good probiotic.

Right that is keto and Doctor Berg predict this, instead I make sure of low carbohydrates and bone broth but also ethnic foods that use carbohydrates smell strongly give me dry eyes. Also leaves that are sprayed with bug spray when pollen comes from there I use heyedrate eye lash lid cleanser and we love eyes foam cleanser ice mask warm and cold. But when I take flaxseed oil it avoids the infection. I have to get to the eye doctor but they make it worse every time they want drops that make me sick prone to infections. I had eye surgeries that’s when my eyes started getting infections now I haven’t been to eye doctors for years don’t want those drops.

There's a really old medievil cure for phebitis which also works for Mrsa it involves leaving raw onion in wine in a copper vessel and might be something else in there like garlic I forget but it is worth a try. I've been trying to find a copper vessel as that's very important. Anyway maybe you could google it and see if it helps. I've used manuka honey successfully on my kids toe infection and that would be milk for eye area. Anything else I know of is too harsh for eye area ..I also found msm powder really good for other skin inflamation ..its a salt of sulfur so it might be better to take it internally it also works for arthritis inflamation...but you can rub it on skin too but I think the fact of it being a dissolved salt might sting your eyes so maybe try it as a drink instead.

So amazing how this channel has grown in content 👍 Also amazing how mainstream all this has become nowadays - we were called nuts when we talked about this stuff over 20 years ago. I'm glad we are learning more through research now, however, it's still a mess because it's so complicated and individual. Probiotics are so individual, what may work for one person, may not work for the next, so people may have to experiment to find what works for them. Soluble fiber is important, IF tolerated, for many gut issues.

Very intersting topic. Connection between microbiome and Eye health is so new that all of the douzens eye doctors that I visited were totally ignorat of. The concept of nutriton as a significant factor to eye health is just alien to them, as if eye is connected to body by ethernet cable! As someone who suffers from chronic dry eyes, I experience this connection firsthand but when I explain it to the docotrs they dismiss it as irrelevant, and just prescribe another useless eye drop. Personally I see that whenver I have bloating (especially after a night of drinking or having lectine heavy foods like lentiles) I get sever dry eyes and excruciating eye pain due to cornia being scratched. Please keep us updated about this crucial eye-gut connection.

The AMD segment of this video was really interesting. I have early stage AMD and because my mother had this disease I had been trying since my 30s to prevent my getting it. My mother had been a smoker, her diet wasn't great but she did eat meat and veg, a typical american diet I would say. I never smoked, I took supplements of E, C, Lutein and Omega 3s. I ate dark green leafy vegs and went plant based. So I was dismayed at getting the disease. This microbiome info could be my problem. TY!

I have 83-year-old friend with AMD, a lazy vegetarian most of her adult living on pasta, salad, bread, chocolate and wine. She became terribly ill some years ago with schizophrenia symptoms and falling and many other problems. It turned out she was Vit B12 deficient and her Doctor prescribed ‘SALMON’! She and her 52 year old son refuse to eat protein, not even eggs. She has agreed to spinach and about one hard-boiled egg a week! She is now eating yogurt and I am trying to persuade her to add a raw egg which my dog and cat have but she won’t even try this. She is also deaf. She is paying a terrible price for her compassion for animals. Namaste 🙏

Joseph, Do you ever ask your patients who have very healthy eyes how their gut health is? For unhealthy eyes, do you get labs done for things such as homocysteine, insulin levels, hbA1c, Omega 3 levels, vitamin d levels? Do you check their weight, blood pressure, heart rate and O² levels? Do you ask how much exercise they get, exercise that will increase their heart rate? Do you ask how much sunshine they get everyday? Do you ever prescribe in writing a certain amount of exercise and lifestyle change? Do you measure axial length? Do you help your patients to reduce axial length?
@DoctorEyeHealth
@DoctorEyeHealth Жыл бұрын
Thanks for asking all this! I started my journey and interested in lifestyle health in regards to the eyes when I was doing my residency at the VA here in Minnesota. Out of all the patients I had seen (mostly older men with many diseases and on hundreds of medications) I maybe saw 7-8 older guys total who had no disease, on no meds and interestingly had little to no eye disease. I asked each guy what there secret was...they all said diet and exercise. To answer your questions - No, I don't ask how healthy my patients gut is (unless I suspect a connection to disease, such as uveitis for example). - I do order labs to check for diabetes, but often refer to their PCP or GP for that. I do order omega 3 levels when we decide to consider taking omega 3 supplements (to know where they are at or even if it would be recommended) - We do not check for weight, heart rate and oxygen levels in our outpatient clinic as they typically don't apply to eye conditions but we do check Blood pressure as it plays a significant role for the eye. - We do measure axial length in the clinic and we have been practicing myopia management with Ortho - k, atropine, MiSight for several years now. -- I typically don't "prescribe" exercise/lifestyle habits but I do often have conversations about the topic for patients. I always discuss eye healthy foods and habits around sunlight protection. - I also discuss benefits of sunshine or outdoor time for children and young adults - even college age students.

Glucomanam is tasteless, plain but makes a gluupy thick effect (at least double what chia seed does and feels great and helps wieght loss in a meta analysis feels very good to take)

Yes, I found a cocktail for eyes sight, that improves clear vision, clear-sharp vision, can see street sigh, and read books without glasses. I just want to help the whole world to have better eyes sight, no more blurring, especially for seniors. Tell the world about this cocktail DIY. It works for seniors me and my friends. Here the eyes cocktail = 4 beetroots +2 apples blended into a paste and put in a container for one week + two spoonful apple cider vinegar + some Himalayan salt. when you drink take only 2 or 3 spoons of beet paste and mix with a glass of orange juice. You can drink from day one to the end of the week and you will see the result as you can see tv more clearly, and the surroundings more real no more blurring. This is the Gut Microbiome and eyes Health. Love from seniors, if it works for you please tell the monks and nuns and old people in Tibet, Nepal, and the Himalayan people to know about this cocktail. It is free for all people on this Planet Earth🌎🌏🌍No commercial. Gut relates to eyes.

Great video, Dr. Allen. As a fellow O.D., I appreciate the deep dive into this topic. I feel that for most patients, however, they get lost in the minutia of gut biome discussion. We get lost in the forest focusing on the trees. What can they do is the big question as you eluded to at the end. An ancestrally appropriate diet consisting of fatty meats, and low starch vegetables VOID of grains, sugars and highly processed seed oils is all that is needed, for most, to abate their miriad of inflammatory health conditions. Our modern diet, including the current food pyramid, calorie counting and portion control is the problem. The modern dietary advise creates a hormonal issue (ie insulin resistance). We are creating a metabolically unhealthy majority. The eye issues are a further manifestation of this problem. Low carb, ketogenic, ancestrally appropriate diet (however one wishes to call it) is the solution.

A ketogenic diet further inflames the body long-term. Meat and poultry are acid-forming and inflammatory. And if one purchases the standard fare sold at the grocery store, they're often full of hormones, antibiotics etc. that make you sicker, not better. An acidic body creates dis-ease. A cleansed body that leans alkaline is free of disease.

Hey thank you! I agree it is easy to get lost in the trees with this information. I feel the gut microbiome topic is so fresh, especially in the eye industry, that is difficult to make strong conclusions. We just don't have much clinical evidence, and what is there is fairly weak. When it comes to the dietary food wars out there, I certainly have my opinions but I try to stay open minded to all camps. At least when it comes to the eye and ocular nutrition, I feel the best evidence still lies with something along the lines of a true - more plant centric Mediterranean diet - with more benefits toward fish, if you were to consume more meats (as DHA from fish sources cross the blood retinal/ blood brain barrier better ). I think the low carb/ketogenic camps can work decent for short term weight loss but I fear potential long term consequences for many people - as many people following these diets adopt a heavy meat and saturated fat intake. I am sure you have also managed insane levels of diabetic retinopathy, vein occlusions, hypertensive retinopathy, or stroke related vision loss cases...and the relationship between all of them is the risk for cardiovascular disease. So I think no matter what, a diet that shows the best evidence for preventing heart disease is also on the line for the best diet for the eyes.

I heard that a significant number of students need glasses by the end of college, probably due to all the abnormal close-up eyestrain from reading, but that possibly taking breaks to exercise your eyes by going out to focus on distances instead of close up might keep your eye focusing muscles more balanced. I tried this and would go out and walk, focusing on distant tree tops to try to see individual leaves. I still do this and I think it is very good advice. Just take times to change your focus from close up to far away, at least to a tiny thing on the other side of your room so your eye muscles can practice changing your eyeball shape to focus on different distances.

Doctor Eye Health. Kefir is like super yogurt. Yogurt usually has 3-5 active cultures, kefir can have 20 or more. It’s a liquid that works well in smoothies. The bacteria eat a lot of the milk sugars so it’s sour unless you add more sugar. I used to add half a banana or spoon of jam to sweeten it. It does also have yeast so don’t leave the smoothy sitting on the counter too long, you could get an adult beverage. And from what I’ve read, some of those cultures can colonize the gut going forward, different from yogurt. I think kefir came from Eurasian nomads trying to keep milk from spoiling. It’s in many cultures.
