I have Wet AMD in both eyes. The left eye has advanced and I have vision loss. Ocular injections seem to be helping my right eye be more stable and have slowed the vision loss on the left. My job has me working on screens 10 hours or more a day. I don't drive any longer if I have any errands to run farther than 10 minutes from my house. I do have distorted vision and I can't recognize faces readily anymore when people are walking toward me. I am also an artist so this has been terrifying for me but I am adapting well. The upside is that I have been predominately on the Mediterranean diet for many years - with the exception of eliminating gluten due to a sensitivity and avoiding all soy due to an allergy - so it could be much worse - and my doctor has me on AREDS 2. Losing the vision and living alone have been challenging but I am coping relatively well. This is something I never expected in my early 50s, but I am not going to let it stop me.

Have you considered the Carnivore Diet. If you watch videos by Dr Ken Berry and Dr Anthony Chaffee and Steak and Butter Girl, I find reading the comments, they are full of testimonials on the Carnivore Diet curing every mental and physical condition! I have just started for my mental health. I am 77 and like you live alone and so have to stay fit. The extra Vitamin B12 you get with this way of eating is helpful with MD. I have a good friend whose MD was caused by being vegetarian!! Namaste 🙏

How odd, I’ve been plant based for 6 years, I’m 66yo, just recently added CrossFit to my daily 4mi trail run, decided to add fatty fish (sardines and salmon) and fish oil epa/dha supplements to my diet for brain health (and extra protein to fight off sarcopenia) .. seems I should have known what’s good for the brain is good for the eye. Better to be lucky than right.

Eating the fish is a great plan but nearly all fish oil supplements are found to be rancid before it even leaves the factory. You might try an algae based EPA/dha though if you still want to supplement. All processed food is laden with oxidized soybean oil or other seed oils as the inherent fat ( extends shelf life). Avoid, avoid, avoid. One of the causes of AMD is oxidation according to this doc.

Macular degeneration didn't exist much before 1900. It was the addition of processed "seed" oils to our diet that is the foundation for macular degeneration. Macular degeneration increased at the same trajectory as the increase of macular degeneration over the last 100 years. Now we look at it as "common". Any amount of seed oil is toxic to the body. You will find out how bad the situation is when you seek to eliminate this from your diet. It is in almost everything!

You’re right about the trajectory of AMD following the same trajectory as seed oils but you can avoid them easily by insisting in restaurants that they cook your order in butter, animal fat, olive oil or a even a relatively new, safe, even for cooking at high temps-cultured oil called Zero Acre. A few restaurant chains have already switched to Zero Acre. And also, eliminate processed foods!

Anyhow he gets the shot and said don’t feel it’s over very fast small needle ever He was waiting and doc said it’s already over. They numb 15 mins before with drop. It has stabilized the worst eye which gets the shot. So don’t worry about shot hurting. Know sounds awful but not bad as sounds. We have ate fish once week for years sockeye salmon. Also have taken tons vitamins 25 years. Take lutein and zeaxanthan for many years b4 getting.

Most mainstream doctors have one class in nutrition in all of medical school. Hippocrates the father of modern medicine said 'let food be thy medicine and medicine by thy food.' A great majority of illness can be cured with just eating correctly and avoiding things like dairy, sugar, processed foods, seed oils, corn syrup and gluten!

One great and easy exercise that almost eceryone can do is the "soleus pushup". Just sit in a chair with you feet on the ground and lift your heels, while keeping you toes on the floor, lower you heels and repeat. The best thing is that the soleus muscle don't fatigue so this exercise can be done for hours so it's perfect for people that sits a lot at work, and don't have time to go for walks.

Question! Would Omega 3 Phospholipids be as beneficial as DE3 for someone who has AMD as well as dry eyes? Your channel has been so helpful as I also battle glaucoma! I have a great team of ophthalmologists, but your in depth dives have been so informative! Thank you!
@DoctorEyeHealth
@DoctorEyeHealth 20 күн бұрын
Right now, there isn't much research on phospholipid Omega 3 products...let alone ones on the eye. DE3 does have higher amounts of EPA and DHA, and your body does make use of the DHA - it just has to take a round about process to get into the neural tissue. Otherwise, the phospholipids are more about the DHA omega 3 and right now the research on dry eye is more focused on the benefits of the EPA. Hope that helps.

Excellent presentation. There are some people that probably should not take AREDS supplements, however. For example, people with hemochromatosis, a common genetic disorder, maybe should not take AREDS supplements owing to their high vitamin C content which will increase unwanted and dangerous iron absorbtion. Could you comment on this as well as the association with AMD and hemochromatosis? There is also a significant pecentage of people who get worse on AREDS. Would be interested in your comments on this as well. I really appreciate your videos. They are very informative. I've been using one of the dry eye gels you recommended with great success. Thanks!

Love your videos and presentation style. Similar to commenter below, I am 60 and was diagnosed with drusen based glaucoma last year following routine eye test. My eye pressure was Ok (15mmHg), prescribed nightly drops of monopost which brought them down to ~10. Also have had dry eye (cauterised ducts to help) since my early 20's 😞 Was basically told there was no other specific surgical/medical intervention to help drusen, other than some studies linking to benefits of high doses of ginkgo biloba and Vit B3 supplement. I take the former, but stopped taking the latter following recent links to to heart attacks and strokes. As a general question, woudl it be safe to have IPL for dry eyes with drusen? Would be great if you could do a video covering what drusen are, prognosis, medical interventions, supplements and drawbacks of them.
@DoctorEyeHealth
@DoctorEyeHealth 20 күн бұрын
Hey thank you! So there are retinal drusen (and a few forms - not always associated with AMD), and then there is optic nerve head drusen - which are a little different and are more calcified buildups within the nerve itself. Optic nerve drusen may weaken the optic nerve and make it more susceptible for glaucomatous damage. The IPL procedures should be done with some form of eye protection if the treatment is approaching the eyelids/eyeball. So there should be no relationship between the IPL and any forms of retinal or optic nerve drusen. IPL does induce some level of photobiomodulation, which is how red light therapy is known to work, and recent studies on red light therapies, have shown retinal drusen to improve with these treatments. Pretty fascinating! Looking forward to more research on that.

I'm not sure though if I made the right decision. Thank you for this video about eye diseases. Very informative. God bless

Dr. Chris Knobbe presented a very compelling case linking linoleic acid consumption with prevalence of age related macular degeneration in those populations. Edit: I saw you mentioned it in the Q&A, if the last years have told me anything is that you should be extremely careful with medical concensus, science doesn't work on concensus.
@DoctorEyeHealth
@DoctorEyeHealth 20 күн бұрын
Agreed about the consensus, to a degree. But good research does need to be peer-reviewed and I didn't want to go to into it but the whole seed oil fear is heavily debated. I think the best course of action is to try to eat real food and try to avoid too much excess oil/fats to begin with. But I hope to have a chance to ask Dr.Knobbe a bunch of questions in the future.

@@DoctorEyeHealth I would love to see a discussion on the subject with him, I would guess he would be open to come to the channel and present his case. Agree about eating real food but unfortunately I can't defend the peer review process anymore, I've seen too many failures and behaviors that can only be attributed to corruption or malice, not only incompetence.

Thank you for this video, Dr. Allen. I have makula degeneration really bad in my left eye. About 4 or 5 years ago, the VA optometrist told me I had it, but it was not noticeable for several years. They put me on areds 2. I also take a whole alphabet soup of supplements. No distortion on the grid sheets they gave me. However, last fall, I woke up one morning, and when I went outside, the phone and power lines looked like a bunch of writhing snakes. I immediately called the VA, and they got me in the next day. They said the left eye was bleeding and sent me to a retina specialist. There are only a couple here in Vegas, so I had to wait a couple of months. He stuck a needle in my eye with whatever. He said it would shrink the blood vessels. It took me a couple of days to recover from that. I think all the local stuff and the fluid from the injection got to my brain. That did a lot to improve my vision and stopped the bleeding. He showed me the pictures of my eye, which showed the bulge in the macula as it was separated from the eye ball. Anyway, I went twice more but canceled the fourth appointment. I just couldn't take it anymore, and I did not notice any improvement from the second one or the third. I do have that blockage in the center of my eye, but I can only see it if I cover the right eye. I'm an avid reader, but now my eyes get really fuzzy after a while, which will last most of the day. I'm wondering if I actually caused this. During the summer I go swimming at our complex every day. Last summer I got swimming goggles and wore them to swim. I wonder if they put to much pressure on my eye. They are those little ones you see competition swimmers wear. I had them pretty tight. Thanks again Doctor.

One of the main causes is diet--too much sugar and too many carbohydrates. Also, the vitamins have questionable results. You'd be better not just taking the vitamins, but also eating a lot of spinach and other green leafy vegetables each day. (I have difficulty following my own advice even though I know it is sound. I read a lot and watch a lot of scholarly videos.)

Hey thanks for sharing. Sorry to hear that you have had to deal with that. Theoretically Swimming goggles could increase the pressure of the eye but I have never seen any reports or publications discussing what pressure if could inflict. Either way though, Pressure on the eye is more of an issue with glaucoma and not macular degeneration. The development of macular degeneration and fluid inside the eye is more related to the pathophysiology of the condition and due to the risk factors discussed in the livestream. I hope you can follow up with local doctors and continue to monitor your macular degeneration and perhaps if you do have permanent vision changes, you can speak with a specialist, such as a low vision specialist to establish some level of relationship with them. Wishing the best for you. Also, for what it's worth, thank you for your service.

Hi, appreciated your presentation. I was given a sample of Preservision, and, unfortunately it has 80mg of zinc is generally not recommended from what I have seen. So, I am taking Life Extension Macuguard (the one without Astaxanthin), an additional 6 mg. separately, vitamin A and 30 mg. Zinc. I was told I have macular degeneration by an optometrist and then went to a retinal specialist opthamologist who said I do not have it. He said I have drusin but not in the macular. He recommended Areds for every one for eye health. The retinal specialist is highly respected in Dallas, Texas. I don’t want drusin at all! I am going to watch your video carefully again, as I am writing this. Thank you.

Thank you so much for all you do ie. videos like this one. Recently my ophthalmologist informed me during a yearly checkup that I have a small speck of drusen in one eye, but its too early to tell if it will develop into AMD (either wet or dry). He suggested that I start taking AREDS2 (which I have) and he'll re-check it in one year. My question is: should I wait a whole year to see what may or may not develop? I am a relatively healthy/active 62 year old male who eats right (have cut out almost all sugar and most carbs from diet) and get decent daily exercise. Is it possible that drusen can be reversed? Thanks again and I am hoping that you are able to answer my questions.

I just opened this page and I'm very interested. I have what macular degeneration and the head received injections for over 3 years at the VA here in San Francisco. They discovered that the injections weren't helping that I've been referred to UCSF And older treatment which have not yet received. Realized that I'd not told the doctors in retina department that I did injure my eye several years ago and I'm wondering if that might have caused this to some extent. I reached up above my head for a counter for what I thought was artificial tears. in fact, it was a solvent to Polish the headlights on my car. I was treated immediately at the ER at the veterans hospital and maybe that's not the cause but, I'm looking forward to watching your video to see what I can learn.

Excellent content, but I wish you wouldn't demonize the eye injections for wet amd. I've been getting them for about a year now in my left eye, and people, there isn't any pain involved. The eye is numbed quite well and there is a tiny bit of pressure felt, but that's it. The hour or two after the eye feels a little gritty but that passes quickly. And the benefit is that the injection stops further deterioration and you may even see some improvement in your vision. To me it seems so strange that there is no treatment yet for dry amd (I think there may be something on the horizon) but effective treatment for wet amd that works.

Hey thank you! You are right that the injection really isn't painful at all and i tried to stress how good they are and how people, even if they are uncomfortable with the injections, really should continue to see their specialist because the benefits are so good. But yeah, the thought of needles in the eye freaks some people out. Hopefully, if people see this content and incorportate some of the info they can avoid needing anything like that. Right now, I think the red light therapies for AMD sound the most promising.

Lower glucose in your diet so that you digest EVERYTHING and do not store excess energy . The excess energy raises triglycerides, damages the endothelial lining . My father is 97 with diabetes and arteriosclerosis and 5 stents. All his medications were removed 10 years ago. He’s never been healthier . His family has all passed away . Everyone says it’s genetics but it’s clearly not. His diet and moving his body walking and being active prevents clotting . Macular degeneration has affected his siblings. He did not grow up on the Mediterranean diet even though he’s from there. He’s grown up on fresh caught sea food , raw sea urchin, raw shrimp, pig knuckle stew. Lots of unpasteurized parmigiano . The main thing is to eat only what you need and meager portions . Never over eat when you are young. Ration

Thank you so much, doctor. I have learned from you really valuable info. For ex about drusen! No one has explained it to me! A have glaucoma and drusen. Glaucoma has been present in the family from my grandparents, mother's side, macular degeneration father's side. Macular degeneration not present in my eyes! relief, but I don' t have to sleep on it! I was told, re drusen, bad luck and that I have to live with that, nothing to do. about it. There is a lot to do about everything!!! Thank you. What is strange, or not, is my left eye has gone into miopia, and is not feeling well, iop higher, compared to my right eye. In the last year. My right eye can see in the distance very well, my left eye can read! Questions please: Should I put together the info from glaucoma added with the present info re macular degeneration? Is one treatment or another harming in any way the other afection? How can I protect eyes for their separate affections? Glasses don t help me so much! Very grateful again, for all the shared info. Joseph, I am considering what correlation there might be with eye muscle atrophy and macular degeneration. Have you ever kept track of eye movement capability , how far and fast someone is able to move their eyes, up, down, left, right? How many repetitions can be done before slowing for people with macula problems?. I am thinking that if someone has a lifestyle that requires constant eye movements they may build stronger eye muscles which would recruit more blood flow to the area and help clear waste products. I started to wonder about REM during sleep, what is it's purpose, our muscles are mostly paralyzed during sleep but seems our eyes are left functioning. Do you know if anyone has looked for any correlation between lack of REM sleep and macula problems? All of these problems (in my mind) seem to be related to blood and lymph flow, down to the finest capillaries. I would like to hear your thoughts and of your experiences.
@DoctorEyeHealth
@DoctorEyeHealth 20 күн бұрын
Some fascinating questions!!! I personally have not looked into research about eye movements to that degree. I am also unsure to what extent eye movements play with lymph flow. However, my girlfriend is a leading mind and researcher in eye movements and eye exercises(Vision Therapy) and I will ask her later today. We do know that retinal cell recovery (mainly with oxygen consumption) occurs most heavily at nightime during rest. Eye muscles can be trained, however I am not sure about their relative strength and/or muscle size with training (hard to measure that). But The eye muscles are very unique, they are not like other forms of skeletal muscle. Thanks for the excellent questions!
@mballer
@mballer 20 күн бұрын
@@DoctorEyeHealth If retinal cells recovery happens during sleep, what would you think about using supplemental oxygen while sleeping? Have you heard of EWOT? This is breathing 95%+ oxygen through a mask while exercising and supposedly recovers capillaries from damage.
