Surangama Sutra Fascicle 9, Multi-Voice with Text Screens

Per Wikipedia, the Śūraṅgama Sūtra (Sanskrit: शूरङ्गम सूत्र; traditional Chinese: 大佛頂首楞嚴經) (Taisho 945) is a Mahayana Buddhist sutra that has been especially influential in Chan Buddhism. The general doctrinal outlook of the Śūraṅgama Sūtra is that of esoteric Buddhism and Buddha-nature, with some influence from Yogacara. A common translation of the sutra's name in English is the "Heroic March sutra" (as used e.g. by Matthew Kapstein, Norman Waddell, and Andy Ferguson), or the "scripture of the Heroic Progress" (as used e.g. by Thomas Cleary). Some of the main themes of the Śūraṅgama Sūtra are the worthlessness of the Dharma when unaccompanied by samādhi power, and the importance of moral precepts as a foundation for the Buddhist practice. Also stressed is the theme of how one effectively combats delusions that may arise during meditation.

So from about 40-42 minutes I admit I myself have been influenced sometimes to think that desire is the path or that there's nothing wrong with impure living (breaking the prohibitions)

That idea sounds a bit like some aspects of Tibetan Buddhism, though I don't know a lot about it.

@@namoamidabuts the prohibitions are in place for a good reason, if one seeds up ill-will or certain unskillful conducts one ends up on a miserable path. For example eating or sleeping all the time presupposes a conditioned wave of states of hunger and exhaustion. A well-balanced healthy lifestyle help ones yoga practice, yet people should know how to distinguish between important and unimportant matters, what's skillful and what's not, what's necessary for a healthy abiding and what's detrimental for such.

Good morning: Do you have any insight as to why Tathagata insists on getting so technical? He speaks of heavens which have no practical application for raggamuffin folks like me. I can't attain the even if they do physically exisf? It can be frustrating, and you'd think he would know that. Of course he didn't ask my opinion, did he? Ray
