Here are the facts. His Mother's side is from Paramakudy. Father is Catholic from Jaffna. His Father moved to Bogawantalawe and began teaching. He ended up as a Principal at Bogawantalawe school. Manoharan is the only child. Mano studied at St. John's Jaffna and later completed a degree in a English literature at St. Joseph's college, Trichy. He was a good athlete and a good singer. He sang the original Surangani in sinhala in the 70s and became popular. Thereafter for rest of his life he was known as Surangani Manohar.
