As a Mini owner and having driven it full time for 10 years as the only car now, I can really relate to the assessment of this video ... for the most part. Back in 2014, I bought a 2004 Mini Cooper Convertible for my wife whilst in Cyprus. To be honest, the car was great fun to drive cabrio, to park in tight spaces, and just to cruise in with the top back, when it worked. Having stated that, we paid for the top to be repaired three times, and it still does not fold all the way back. The glove box had to be repaired twice and broke again recently. The same goes for the trunk/boot lid. We had to rig both the glove box and the trunk ourselves, thanks to some good videos on YT. We can drive the Mini with the roof in targa mode at least after the last repair, but God only knows, when the thing will break again! The manual gearbox is getting really hard to shift as of late, so we turned to YT videos to "patch" it up today as well! Thank God for WD-40 and silicon! As we live in Australia now, as was the case in Cyprus, the car is so stiff, it can ride like a brick on bad roads. However, find a curve or two and the Mini becomes the proverbial "wolf in sheep's skin" ... more akin to a race car. You really do buy it for the looks, nostalgia, and quirkiness. We loved it, however, after all the issues, money spent to service it, and 10 years down the road, we are ready to sell our little Mini Cooper Convertible finally. So, all in all, I have to agree with ReDriven's assessment. Hope my assessment helps. If you have never experienced these issues - yet - you are indeed lucky! Good luck...

I'm in the UK and well into my 70's. I've got a 2002 Cooper just like that one. It has had its niggles over the years but I can still get parts for it at reasonable prices. I don't need all the modern Hi Tech I've got plenty of CD's and I've been around long enough to know where I'm going. My Mini has done 190,000Km and it's still pretty nippy and corners like a Go-Kart. Of course I remember when the very first Mini's appeared back in 1959 so maybe I'm just nostalgic but I love it. I'll drive it until it or I die and I'm not betting on which will be first.

the middle console arm rest / glove box is an after market accessory. Ive had the harmonic balancer, power steering fan and thermostat all replaced over the last 10 years. In my opinion they're a great car, great on fuel but servicing costs and replacing tyres can be quite expensive. If you have a flat you have to call a tow truck as the 'run flats' do not always work.

Reliability....well, not great but not the worst either. This is Mini no 5. Mino no 3 was a very different story. Always breaking down on a weekly basis. I sold it as couldnt afford to put any more money into the car and the new owners ended up scrapping it. I think its maintenance yes, but Luck of the draw as well.

I owned an ‘05 Cooper S Cabrio and an ‘11 with the turbo. Supercharged version thermostat failed and coolant leaks - trades for the new turbo version which had less harsh suspension as first one had sports suspension with runflats and was brutal on our shitty roads. Newer model had timing chain tensioner failure caught just in time but roof rattles drove me insane so in ‘16 I bought the Megane RS265 which has been 100% reliable - who would think it - spot on info here AK as I love Minis but they’re tough to live with and newer bloated versions aren’t anywhere as appealing 👍👍👍

I own a Cooper S in the same colour and have personally reconditioned it to the tune of thousands of dollars. Mine have these huge 6 piston calliper brakes from Wilwood that literally make your eyes pop out when you hit the skids hard. I love the car to bits despite some of the flaws mentioned in the video. I have made modifications to some of the mechanicals that I think are design flaws from the factory to improve the reliability factor. Obviously, by spending this amount of time and money on it I don't intend to sell it any time soon. So I guess when you love something this much, you love it warts and all. This type of car will remain within the realms of car enthusiasts and I don't really have an issue with that. Sorry, but I would never be seen dead in a Yaris. Unless it's a GR. Though, that really isn't a Yaris mechanically speaking.

I look after mine that helps, and I think that's true of any car. Mine has a reconditioned gearbox, the facelift gearbox is better. Exhausts rust at the backbox join. Suspension and tyres should be renewed, and handling improves no end. Oil leaks; check rocker seal. Mine still has the intermittent electric window not working, a rubber mallet takes care of that! Does it rattle? Yes! Is the ride a bit harsh on London roads? Yes! But is it one of the most fun driver's cars I've driven, even on short trips? Definitely! I love it, flawed but brilliant! Had a '02 for 18 years with the sports package. Fun car to drive , good on fuel. In the eighth year, the power steering failed , Mini knew of the problem, but did not issue a recall till a year later , and that's typical of BMW . Went through two clutches , 9 hour job , not that I was hard on it , they where short lived , plastic components. Then windows and locks started to fail . Air bag light was on $500 for a wiring harness for the seats . Last straw was the shifter cables , $ 500 just for the cables had to wait a month for the from Germany. Overall was a great car , but never own a BMW product again , expensive to maintain.

It's well known that the 2005-06 model years are the ones to have. These were the last years of the Gen. 1 cars, and all the problems from the previous years (e.g., the Midlands transmissions in the base cars) were resolved. Most of the other criticisms in this video apply to any other 17-year-old car - some electrical components failing, stiffer suspension, etc. MINIs are all BMW under the skin, and, if maintained properly, are very durable, high-quality vehicles. I've been driving the same MINI since 2005, and I'll never sell it. I do all of the work on it myself, though, and would recommend that anyone who wants an older, "classic" car, knows how to do their own maintenance. Also, never buy one of these with an automatic transmission; these cars are made to be driven.

That said, my daily is a 2019 MX-5, but I will note that the MINI is in many ways more fun to drive, but do not have it as primary transport at this age. Pretty good review, and well done video. Mine is a grocery getter and my Autocross car, and is great for that purpose, kept garaged and remains meticulously maintained.

People that bag the Tritec engine, in the Cooper S, it’s a cast iron block, has forged crank and bottom end, won international engineering awards in 2003 & 2004 for it category, and we’ll known and tested in the Mini community for taking 450hp standard (when people have swapped the supercharger for a turbo). The facelift also got a Teflon coated supercharger. They are awesome engines. I’ve owned and driven a lot of driver cars and the Mini is one of the most engaging cars I’ve ever driven.

That "pro mechanic" was pretty embarrassing. I guarantee if you asked him to differentiate between an R50 and an R56 he wouldn't be able to. Sure, R50s and R53s have their issues, but timing chains is not one of them. That's the R56. A 2006 R50 will be a pretty dependable car.

Absolutely love my 05 Mini S that has the yellow n black color scheme like the one shown in this vid. However, it is a major pain in the @zz working on it. One thing I recommend is to immediately change out the stock coolant reservoir with a metal welded seam aftermarket one. It is notorious for the stock plastic tanks to bust at the seams and if you don't see the overheating warning light, you can quickly blow the engine.... ask me how I know 😡. Also, the plastic clips that hold interior panels as well as the plastic bumper cover, and wheel well shrouds get very brittle and break whenever you work on it. So just pick up a bulk bag of the different types, you'll need them. He's 100% right about the weak doorlock cables and the locking mechanism as a whole. Also, make sure the AC system is functioning properly since it is common for the interior exchanger to get a leak which requires the entire dashboard to be removed just to work on it. (oops, just heard him address this issue). I disagree with his assessment of space. With the back seats folded down, there's a huge amount of cargo space. Also, the front has tons of legroom, more than I need at 5'11". I only recommend a Mini if you're just absolutely in love with them. Otherwise... look for something else. Edit: Road noise when driving: I have around a 2000 watt RMS sound system with a 12" sub... so road noise is nonexistent 🤣 FYI, the Kenwood 12" sub with box fits perfectly in the rear cubby and if you have the flap that comes down when you close the hatch, it is completely hidden from the outside. Rockford Fosgate makes a small amp model that fits perfectly in the side panels where the stock one would go. I have one for the main speakers and another for the subwoofer.

Mint 2004 R50 here. 2nd owner. 122,000 miles. Other than a first-time clutch replacement at 115,000 miles and a dirty 02 sensor (Cleaned it fix), I’ve had no issues. Average 25 MPG and I’m really trying to destroy this little clown car, but it just won’t die. Anybody who assumes these cars are unreliable is just plain wrong or they have neglected to do proper maintenance over the years. I would like to buy another sports car, but this damn thing just won’t break down and give me a reason to go car shopping. My wife drives a 2019 countryman S all four and it has been a stellar vehicle. Go ahead and buy your Toyotas and Hondas and fall asleep while you’re driving such boring cars. Believe me, these are much more fun and I love their rally racing heritage. If you are not a car guy, then this is probably not for you and you should stick with something more “neutered”. My wife hates this little car because it’s such a chick magnet. Every morning when I get up I have to brush off the bras and panties that have been strewn across it in the hopes of getting a lift in this little gem. I can’t drive past an elementary school without being mobbed by little kids who are overjoyed at the site of this little beast. I’ve lost count at how many times I’ve nearly pissed myself in laughter as hillbillies in giant pick up trucks have flagged me down because their wives/girlfriends insist on getting a picture with this beauty of a car. I wish people would just leave me the fuck alone so that I can drive in peace, but when you wear a size 12 shoe and drive one of the smallest cars on the planet that women adore, well, you probably know what I mean and you just get a lot of attention. Minis for life!

short answer: mini coopers are mostly high maintenance, and rock solid if properly maintained, but they don't often appeal to people who are rigid about maintenance so used ones tend to need a lot of work to be reliable. If you do the maintenance, they are great cars. Repairs and parts may be expensive, but if you take care of it, that's unlikely to be an issue. New minis are not super expensive, so probably don't buy a used one unless you are either familiar with them and can do some of the work yourself, or don't mind the gamble/costs for the year and model you really want. So you may have to spend more on oil changes etc. especially on the turbo models, but the mileage makes up for it....except they're so fun to drive you may not get that 30-40 mpg. I drive an 11 base Cooper I got from a friend. Her parents bought it for her and she isn't car savvy, but her dad was staunch about her doing the proper maintenance so it's actually in really good shape and only has 68k miles. I don't mind working on the Prince engine (so far). The running joke is that you can technically rebuild almost the entire engine without removing it from the bay. I'm shopping for a new car, but I am keeping the mini for a fun weekend drive/project car. I do open it up from time to time, but mostly keep it under 4k RPM and get around 35 mpg. Mine may be an automatic, but it has the semi-manual option, with sport mode and I can turn of the traction control, so I enjoy it plenty when I want to. I get some looks like "THAT 6' tall guy drives a cooper blasting metal?!" and yeah, it's a bit absurd, but I get my creds back at the auto store because I work on it myself for the basics, doing most of the maintenance right in the parking lot.

Great video and you are right on the money with your advice. I love my 2005 Cooper S with almost 300,000 miles (483,000km) on it but I never recommend them when asked. I just can't. I'm fortunate to be able to afford the inevitable MINI repairs but I can see where this car could be a serious financial hardship for someone without that ability. And OMG the interior rattles at this age. Big plans for the warmer months to start tearing the interior apart, install sound-deadening material, a lot of double-sided tape, some foam, and tighten everything up. Oh and don't forget if you want to buy one... PREMIUM FUEL! OUCH! This is the main reason I won't even consider buying a new MINI. I don't know about Australia's prices but here in the US it can be 30% more than regular (sometimes even more).

Now I have to replace water pump cause it’s leaking coolant lately, not to mention I have just replaced refrigerant /AC line yesterday cause it was busted open rubbing against sway bar cause I forgot to put back A/C line bracket which helps for clearance.
