Find the root of 3x² +7x + 2. Solution: a+b=7 and a×b=6 7 is split in +1 and +6 Sign change -1,-6 Divided by coefficient of x² -1/3,-2 it is factors of given eq.

So after watching your vid I moved on to practice problems. The first three went smoothly, then I came across this expression: 2x(2) - 8x+3; ab=6, a+b=--8. I see no factors of +6 which will add to -8,(-6,-1;-2,-3). Am I missing a step or is this an atypical expression?

there's a few short list of factors for 30. 30 is 1 * 30 2*15 3*10 you can quickly try adding and subtracting. There's only 6 combonations to try. there's another method for finding the square using the discriminant within the quadratic formula. The method above lets you quickly check your answer. the answer is is centered at (11/4) so the incercepts will the center +- some number. We can find that number quickly +- sqrt(121+168)/4=+-sqrt(289)/4=+-17/4 so we get 28/4 and -6/4

younlokdz you can multiply first and last number i.e. 2 and 21 in this case which gives 42 and then find roots and 42 orally which can be(1x42,2x21,3x14) and only 3 and 14 gives 11 as answer so select that combination.This is very help for bigger numbers.

We have to find numbers whose sum is -11 and product is -42. If you add -14 and 3, you will get -11. If you multiply them you will get -42.

Following these steps won't bring us to another quadratic equation? For example if we wish to solve the two linear equation there with a and b, we would need to write a(n-a) =m which is actually another quadratic. Just by looking at a and b, won't really tell me their value from those two linear equations.

Yes. It will lead to another quadratic but we dont have to do that. We have to guess two numbers whose sum is coeff of x(s) and product is coeff of x^2 * constant term(p). That can be done by writing all pairs of integers that multiply to p and find which pair's sum is s.
