Looks like a Tautog jig. Bottom sweeper has been making these for a decade but they have 2x or 3x hooks 'ause tog and sheepshead have human-like teeth. They can be a little expensive but they kick ass

Ya, I can kinda see the similarities but a completely different style of head and fished completely different. Surf Heads are designed to match the small sandcrabs we have here on the West Coast and are used for sight fishing in less than a foot of water on top of sandcrab beds or just past the surf break. Unlike sheepshead that are structured based and like you mentioned, have knarly teeth which would call for a much heavier wire gaged hook. These special heads are much smaller and built off an ultra-light wire Owner Hook that can be fished as light as 2-6# setup (as many of us do). Our surf fish here in CA have very small to zero teeth and call the empty vast stretch of sand home. Definitely the West Coast version. Appreciate your input, thank you 🤙

@@FishingWithStingrayDrew That's really cool. We have molecrabs here in NJ, we call 'em sand fleas, maybe the same thing. I bet your jigs would work great on northern kingfish (whiting). I'll have to get some to try 'em out this summer after the black drum and striped bass have moved on. A 100 lb boomer might be a bit much though.

why not make them with stronger hooks?

I might in the future with a 1/2-3/4oz just for the stripers up north from me but that's strictly based off a fish (just one) that isn't very common in my area. I'm located in SoCal, specifically Orange County. As an angler, I don't need stronger hooks. I need the sharpest with the proper wire that fits 2" plastics. I'm using 4-6# test and can only pull so hard. Plus, stronger hooks calls for a thicker wire gage which won't help my finesse approach at all. Muscling in surf perch, corbina, & sfc isn't appealing to me. I'm fishing for sport/fun and my technique calls for Owner Hooks. They are simply the best.
