Great video, sir. Thanks for taking the time to put it together. I could prattle on almost endlessly about the virtues and versatility of surf rock. Suffice it to say that its just plain cool. Currently, my favorite surf acts are The Aqua Velvets, The Mermen, Daikaiju and Los Straightjackets.

I will check out the aqua velvets, I haven't heard them yet. I was just playing a los straitjackets tune a minute ago called new siberia lol, great picking workout. They are killer. I really been digging Los Twang marvels lately, I think they are from Brazil. Man are they ever just rocking my world. It's cool how surf is an international affair these days. Such amazing and melodic music.

Thank you for this video and the information given! I love this kind of music. I enjoyed your rockabilly video as well, but this music is much easier to play!

I'm a Jaguar guy, but this was right up my alley. Great work! I'm kicking myself for not grabbing a deal on the anasounds reverb when i had the chance. Those things are cool! 😎

I love the progression at 1130 with the links built into the chords! Its the essence of the surf simple elegence. Simple but not simplistic. Thanks for posting this! Can you write the name of the song at 1130? Its hard for me to hear it

I’ve been toying with surf guitar for a little while now. I really dig the sounds. I’m using a Gretsch 5420t w/Bigsby, Fender Hot Rod deluxe, and I use an Analog Alien Rumble Seat pedal. It is a pretty great combination. I really dig the jazz master sound you are getting here. Nice playing and well explained video. I really enjoyed it. Sub’d

I was playing with this guy in FL for a time in this awful bro country cover band a few years ago, and he had one of those hot rod deluxe amps and I played through it whenever I'd be at the other guitar players house to practice dumb songs about trucks and beer and whatnot, and I have to say that I loved that amp. It did the clean fender thing I expected but also was a great amp for dirty stuff. Great amps, and the 5420, that's like THE gretsch. But I have my eye on those penguins and white falcons too. Gretsch has been hitting it out the park since the days of Chet Atkins.

Been trying to play surf on my Gibson Les Paul lol Its not terrible, but I think I need the trem bar. My Ventris reverb does pretty good job on reverb though, it drips. Cool video though.

I've always wanted a black lp with p90s but I just never pulled the trigger on it. Danny Gatton used a LP back in the early days and he played ever style in the universe on that thing. Gibson has LPs with f holes and a bigsby, those are pretty rad too
@skaldlouiscyphre24539 ай бұрын
And if I add more distortion this becomes a black metal tutorial. Or more so, add preamp distortion, have zero power amp distortion and put the reverb after the distortion, it becomes very similar to black metal. The whammy bar while you play chords reminds me of shoegaze.

Some of the modern surf stuff borders on hard rock levels of gain, Hawaii Samurai, and Daikaiju come to mind, also Phantom of the highway by Los Twang Marvels sounds like a fender amp on 10, it's pretty rad. Dick Dale pushed his amps all the way up too live.
@skaldlouiscyphre24539 ай бұрын
@@ndguy13243546 Interesting, I'll give those all a listen. I'm already a fan of Hawaii Samurai based on the song titles. I'm not sure if you've seen any of riboflavinmusic's stuff, but he has a bunch of covers of black metal songs in the style of surf and it's interesting how close they sound, outside of the shift in the nature of the guitar distortion and the drums being in half time. It's a bit of an old meme (surf rock covers of black metal songs) but there's definitely some similarities that make it work well. I think that how the distortion is achieved might make a difference between the guitar tones. I assume the surf guitarists would use Fender amps cranked until the power section distorts, rather than throw an HM-2 with everything dimed in front of their amp.

What was the Am-G-F song? Pintour?
@ndguy132435469 ай бұрын
Yes. The version I'm playing is based off of Hawaii Samurai recording of Pintor. Not sure which album of theirs it is on, but their record called "the shape of surf to come" is killer, and every song on it is a home run. Sounds like they record most of their tunes with the amps absolutely cooking.
