Aloha! 🌈 We are Alexus and Michi: PhD students and an international (Mexican American German) LGBT couple at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, located in Honolulu, Hawaii (Oahu). Alexus is a fourth year PhD student studying Biological Oceanography (Marine Ecology, Deep-sea Biology) and Michi is a fifth year PhD student studying Second Language Studies (Applied Linguistics, Language Teaching).
In this 2024 PhD Student Day in the Life Vlog, Michi takes you on a typical day in her life as a PhD student in Oahu, Hawaii, USA. Today, she and Alexus woke up early to go to the University of Hawaii at Manoa campus for classes. Alexus attended an Oceanography zoom class on coastal geochemistry, then Michi and Alexus had their Spanish class together. They managed to squeeze in some work between classes, and Michi worked on her PhD dissertation oral defense for her PhD in languages/applied linguistics. Afterwards, they headed home early to go surfing at Waikiki (Canoes break), enjoying the beautiful sunset while riding the waves.
