Surface Book 1 Swollen Battery Replacement DIY

Hello everyone! In this video I replace the swollen battery from a Microsoft Surface Book 1.
The total cost for tools and supplies if you are starting with nothing is around $100 US.
Heat Gun $40
Replacement Battery $30-$40
Spudgers/Prying Tools (can be included with battery)
T3 Torx scredriver (bit) $5
Glue $5-$10
It is a challenging repair, but with patience and attention, it can be completed by a beginner in 1-2 hours. The cost of this device depends on the internal components and ranges from approximately $200-$400+.

My suggestion for anyone doing this: you can leave the charge port side alone and undo the screws at the top (to take the board around the cameras off) and slide the battery out that way (you will still need to take the screws off the motherboard, but you don't need to undo the cables attached to the mobo. My second big suggestion is to put isopropyl alcohol on the adhesive holding the battery... if you put enough there as you lift the battery out (I used a piece of plastic initially but then was able to get my finger tips under) the remaining iso alcohol should continue to pull into the adhesive and it really helps loosening it.

Hi does anyone know where I could get replacement antenna from or if it's possible to salvage the existing ones? They seem intact except for where they were attached under the bracket, is there something I could use to reconnect those bits?

I did not. I believe I left some of the people previous residual glue and just counted on that. The PC is still working very well.

Well, I don't use this laptop heavily. Stream netflix for a couple of hours or word editing seems fine. I spend most of my time on my desktop. It gets pretty hot, but so far it's working well.

Update: I have used it for doing homework online and streaming KZbin and editing websites. Still nothing too heavy, but its not a very powerful laptop. Seems to be holding up fine.

I replaced the battery of the keyboard base. But I don't think I can replace the battery of screen. It is crazy hard. I am sure that I will break the display.

You can do it! The trick is to hear up the glue and go slowly around the whole screen when separating it. Don't pry too hard in a single spot. Work around slowly and be very patient. It is the longest part of the repair.

Yes, that is most likely a result of overheating. Due to poor design, overheating is most common in surface book 1 and surface book 4. The heat sink from the CPU passes over the battery which already generates a lot of heat.

🙂 yes! That's what I've heard it called. And you're absolutely right. Patience is everything. It's pretty easy and fun as a DIY home repair, just take your time. If you get frustrated, just take a break and come back later.

I usually check Amazon, eBay, and iFixit first, and then go from there. Just make sure the battery is confirmed to be compatible with the model you have :)
