This is a tired comparison already. If you want a tablet experience with a few laptop usability, the iPad wins. If you want a laptop experience in a tablet form factor then go with the many windows tablet solutions. It’s not a “which is better?” question, but a “what do you need it for?” question.

It can be a laptop replacement. I used a surface 2 during my college years, used MS excell, PP, Word, downloaded files in excess. There was barely anything I couldnt do with the microsoft surface. I always had it with me since it has notebook and the pen. Never used notebook and I still have all my notes saved from those years. Its an amazing product.

As a long time ipad user - i can say that using the ipad in landscape with the keyboard is not weird at all... the home button is only really used as a fingerprint because you can use the 'home' button on the keyboard... the camera also works extremely well whether in landscape or portrait - it is very weird that you mentioned that because ALL tablets and phones have that same 'issue' when you switch between landscape and portrait. The idea of the tablet is to be a handheld device - most do get cases or covers to use as a stand...it's not for everyone, but i can see why having a built in kickstand would help - although you are screwed if it gets broken... apple try to have no moving parts because this means less chance of things going wrong. The surface go in portrait mode doesn't work well - icons bottom and side...and it makes the screen look very thin and awkward for reading. It's still more of a portable mini PC in tablet form, rather than a tablet that can be quick and comfortable to use as a book in reading mode, to tap into portrait gaming, to view your stunning portrait pictures -- granted, ipad does work well in both portrait and landscape BUT it lacks a PC feel... everything feels like a cut down version, some features don't work well or are missing, sometimes it's literally an iphone version with higher quality images -- i wish apple would create a dual boot and allow a touch form of OS X on tablets...but they wont. For me, the ipad does feel very dated and it now limits you to what you can do. The surface go, is still trying to be a PC but windows is too buggy and old and certainly underperforms on budget windows machines. I would never shell out money for the ipad pro 12" -- i'd by a laptop...But the same with the surface go - at $399 it's reasonable, but it doesn't work well as a tablet and isn't powerful enough as a PC/laptop machine...so then you go up a tear, add the pen etc and then I'm also in the laptop price zone for what is meant to be a budget device. I'd recommend the ipad for those who like sketching and want a quick on the go experience for basic stuff - it is essentially an oversized iPhone with some great creative apps... i wouldn't recommend apples keyboard and the pencil is only for drawing - writing isn't great. I'd struggle to recommend the surface go becuase the entry model is underpower and the next model stops being a budget tablet... i also wouldn't recommend it because essentially you need the keyboard for a good experience and the pen is required for good notetaking (it's a nice pen for writing, not so good for drawing). I'd say - for apple users, consider the ipad for a secondary device. For windows users, get the surface pro for a better size and more for your money (especially now that most places have deals with office and a keyboard thrown in) If you really want the surface go - wait... in a few months the deals will come out... i also think microsoft will lower the price - the starting price should be $299

The iPad isn't a main computing device and neither is the Go. They're complementary, secondary devices at best. Computing needs and preferences should dictate which one to go for.

I hope Microsoft does work on the tablet UI. I think trying to maintain one interface for all things leads to too much compromise. My suggestion? Take a page from the book of Linux, where you can install different desktop environments and switch between them. Windows should have an opt-in classic shell for traditionalists who want it, and a default modern shell that leans on the strengths of Windows 8.

I think that's because the ipad's are thinner on the sides, and maybe has an excuse for thicker top & bottom bezels because of touch ID. I don't think the bezels on the Go are a deal breaker, but it would have been nice if they were a little thinner.

Because of how you have to hold a tablet thin bezels can be a drawback... EVERY time I hand my Galaxy tab with thin bezels to someone some other app or feature activates because of a touch to the side of the screen... VERY annoying. so I wouldn't mind bezels that a decent sized thumb could fit in without activating something...

And apple iOS ACTUALLY has had, and still uses software to detect accidental touches due to the smaller bezels. I really admire both Go and iPad for trying to converge towards a "dual purpose" laptop/tablet experience. I'm still stunned that stodgy old Microsoft has turned Windows into a competent, if not slick, touch-based operating system, while Apple has taken the original first underwhelming iPhone operating system and first slow ARM chips and turned the iPad into the best touch system in the world, with ARM chips that are faster than both the old Atom series and the new Pentium Gold ("Core M wannabees") processors. As one commentator noted, perhaps this comes down to a battle of operating systems, not of hardware. But I think you nail it when it really comes down to "productivity" (which is code word for "typing" and "Office") vs "consumption" (which is code word for slick touch interface and tons of handy, albeit almost single purpose, apps). I can't buy everything new that comes out. So my travel kit is a compromise of Surface 3 with Keyboard Cover for email and banking (easier to type in passwords) plus an iPad 2017 (or Air with LTE) to Netflix and browse. My one gripe is the Surface 3 isn't "lappable" short of a laptop desk. Yeah, I DO like the Go, but not sure about the size. I like the 10.8" of the Surface 3. On the other hand since Word is free for 10" screens, maybe the Go will drum up some Office customers for MSFT.

The main problem with the Surface Go is that Windows 10 is not optimized as well with tablet mode compared to iOS on the iPad. I’ve used windows in tablet mode and every single time I do that, I always resort to using the keyboard and track pad. The Surface Go is good in theory, but it’s designed to have the keyboard in mind. If the Surface Go works best with a Keyboard and track pad, why not just get a regular windows computer? That’s why I think the iPad is the better buy. It works well as a tablet and it can work decently with some laptop tasks, even if it’s not necessary. In contrast, the Surface Go doesn’t work as well as tablet compared to iPads, but also doesn’t as work as well as a regular windows laptop. Overall, the Surface Go is a good idea, but it does seem to be too compromised to be effective at the jobs it was designed to do.

The repeated claim that iOS is a mobile OS and therefore better than Windows on a tablet is not exactly true. iOS was developed from OSX from the Mac. They stripped a lot of features out and added touch gestures. So Windows 10 tablet UI, which is different from W10 desktop UI, is exactly the same except that MS didn't remove features. So even in W10 tablet UI you can still use a mouse or trackpad, run full desktop programs as well as apps and have things like user accounts.

For a tablet uses (watching Netflix, watching youtube, emailing) I'd choose the ipad But for a tablet/student uses (connecting into a projector using a vga adapter, taking notes) the surface go is 2x better

iPads are toys for gamers. Can’t do any work on them. Can’t save anything, can’t add storage, just play games! I have both, my kids play with the iPad and I use the Surface for work, school, and yes... Even play! Got to have Office! Especially MS Access (w/ VBA), as I use it a lot to develop apps for work.

@Siddesh Gannu I used a Windows phone as well as the surface. Really nice hardware but it was perpetually broken in one way or another, mostly on the software side. Windows 10 is no better. They have made it too "exciting" whilst some basic functions that actually matter have been in a broken state for years.

teeXtra I'm going to buy a surface go to supplement my surface book 2. It'll be how I take notes in meetings, send quick emails, consume content, and get a full computer experience on the go. The surface book will be for CAD, photoshop (which the pen is still necessary for), video editing, and serious gaming. Each has it's place.

Interesting that, for the Logitech keyboard for iPad (which I have and is a very nice typing experience, despite being a little fugly) the fact it uses batteries was a downside, but then moments later, the fact that the Surface Pen uses batteries was a plus... and Logitech advertises two years of usage on one battery for that keyboard, compared to the Surface Pen’s one year (I’ve had my keyboard for months, use it nearly every day, and it still has 100% charge). Also, it is definitely goofy, but the Apple Pencil charging method is oddly convenient if you need to charge it quickly on the go; and charging it for 15 seconds gets you 30 minutes of use. I have a Surface Pro 3 alongside my iPad 9.7, and I love them both. I’m genuinely interested in the Surface Go, and kinda do wish it had been available when I bought my Surface Pro for a similar price at a pawn shop. Probably would never have gone back to an iPad if it had been.

Benoît exactly, that's the point. This thing is a full PC desktop attached to external monitor mouse and keyboard, plus it's a full laptop, plus it's a poor tablet. It's 3in1. In this way this Surface can be a true unique phone - companion for people who want 2 personal devices. Instead the iPad, as you said and I agree with you, is a third personal device not being able to be a true pc. Interesting competion here

To me, it's simple. If you're in the Windows environment, get the Surface Go. If you're in the apple ecosystem, then the iPad. I'm actually upgrading to a higher spec'd Surface Pro 6 (from Surface Pro 3) and getting a 1st gen iPad Pro because I love both pens for different reasons.

I vote iPad for the simple reason that the question was about the best _tablet._ Windows has never been a good tablet experience, with a limited store, clunky layout, and overall less user-friendly interface. That’s the reason you never see a Surface out in the wild without the keyboard.

With some improvement, I think the Windows 10 tablet experience would be the way to go in the future. Android tablets and iPads personally still look and feel like blown-up phone UI. There's still huge amount of empty space on the display.

There are times you need to use a mouse on Surface tablets which is a pain! That's why I rather use an iPad or even an Android tablet. Also iPads have lots of touchscreen apps which are properly optimised. Most Windows apps are not properly optimised for touchscreen experiences, not even close to Android tablets.

It’s a tablet/laptop. iPad doesn’t even have mouse support (which sucks!!!!) and the fact that you actually mentioned android (which are trash tablets) shouldn’t even be mentioned! Apple iPad is a toy. All this “apps” are games and gimmicks, when you need to get work done, Surface destroys iPad. Again, i like Apple a lot; I own Apple products and love them, but Surface has become my go to when it comes to getting REAL WORK DONE!

Israel Ruelas Where there are touchscreens with proper interface, there's no need for a mouse scrolling and pointing to specific area needed. Touchscreen is a lot quicker to navigate and to open apps. Surface is frickinly fiddly in comparison.

The 400$ surface go has trade offs not mentioned by the reviewer. The lowest tier 400$ version has 4 gb ram and most importantly only 64gb Of slow emmc storage. Making the Windows experience less than stellar. The base model surface go should be compared to the base model iPad. And the mid tier surface go, like the reviewer has, should be compared to the iPad Pro.

I don't know if Surface Go will have a bump up on drawing capability (which is unlikely since it's basically a cheap version of Surface line), but so far, Surface is still lagging behind in drawing technology.

Caseko CSK in terms of apps you are correct. I was only thinking of the surface pen. If it’s Surface Pen vs Apple Pencil, Surface Pen wins. I like the eraser on it and the buttons and feels nicer and more natural. I own both so I’m not being bias.

I'm about to get a tab. But I'm so torn, specifically between the iPad pro to-be-debuted and Sammy Tab S4. Could you please address these queries and forward any suggestion you may have? Any input would be much appreciated! 1. What I really require is an on-the-go document editor, specifically text document. I need to read, compare, collate and edit Word and Pdf docs on the go (while traveling or commuting) and that too, on multiple windows. 2. I'd also like to catch a break and therefore would like my tab to be a fine entertainment device. Picture quality and audio should be real good. Not external audio, though; but audio through headset. The speakers would almost NEVER be used. That's a certainty. 3. I also would like to scribble on my tab. I need to take notes and writing is much better than typing it out. 4. I am dead set on iPad and am in fact waiting for the latest Pro iteration. But as one who has only experienced the 'open' atmosphere of Windows or Android (I've NEVER experienced iOS), how do I transfer files to an iOS driven device? Do I have to constantly change doc-formats (specifically AV files) every time I need to stream them to my iPad, from my PC? Because if I have to, then it simply is not worth all that hassle, now is it!

I feel like a lot of the keyboard issue could be fixed with a different options. I have a zagg rugged messenger which has the extended area for your wrist and is backlit. It also has a two year battery which can be recharged easily and only runs $99.

But dual boot will be awesome. I never experienced good performance or app support/sensor support by emulation. If Microsoft want they can really do it. Recently team member at Microsoft mobile has revealed that they are really working on a non windows phone. Also they have helped to improve Dex experience on the new Samsung TabS4. So if they carried out that work to this and made a dual boot version, it will be awesome and an iPad killer both as a mobile app supporting device and laptop replacement. But in reality Microsoft will never do any thing exciting. So their place will be taken up by chromebooks, iPad and android in tablet category as always.

well it has an x86 processor while android optimize for arm processor, so not a good idea. Asus did put an x86 proc on their phone but it was a failure. Emulator would be a better choice
