First of a two part video that looks at surface grinding. Surface grinding is not generally used by hobby machinists but learning the basics of the process can help to impress a future employer or bring someone to farm out certain operations to a specialized shop because they would understand that this technique could help in completing and important part. In this video, we will look at the basic cutting action of a grinding wheel, how to operate a manual surface grinder, wheel dressing and part preparation for first cut as well as speeds an feeds for grinding. This video is part of a series of videos that include:

As for all THATLAZYMACHINIST videos, this video is produced for novice , garage or beginner machinists. You can find all my videos as well as project drawings and course notes on my website THATLAZYMACHINIST.COM . Thanks for understanding that I am a professional toolmaker and teacher but I am not a professional video producer (and it shows). I produce these videos for fun as a little retirement project that lets me give back a little of what was passed on to me by so many amazing trades people most of whom, sadly, are no longer with us. Marc is there a way when dressing the surfacing wheel with the diamond to prevent it from knock chips out of the outside and inside surface of the surfacing wheel. I noticed sometimes it will knock quite large chunks off the outside and inside of the surfacing wheel. If you slightly chamfer the outside edges it will cut down the actual width of your surfacing wheel.

Wbich grits are your burnishing and lapping plates? How would you secure non-ferrous material to your table, or if it didn't have a magnet?

Would you believe i got a job grinding tools and one of 3 machines is a small light weight surface grinder. Watching utube i learned alot and only had 1slight accidents cause i for got to tighten the index spindle. Like you say light removal is only way to accurately re move material safely. Tomorrow morning i was asked to see if i can remove. 008 from a spacer used in a spindle just being rebuilt.Since the magnetic table is around 6" there will be over lap of the part im grinding and at 30 degrees will be a challenge depending on the y travel in relation to the spindle or grinding wheel. I haven't seen the part yet but i may have to rearrange the complete magnetic chuck @30"

Great video.... Smashing chap teaching folk on here some very valuable information on surface grinding. There's so much to learn with how to grind different materials, wheel selection, and a huge variety of attachments and various fixtures. Jones and Shipman 540 surface grinders are the best .

Also, great video! very informative. I've just bought a small 612 manual surface grinder and am learning as much as possible while I finish prepping/installing the thing (cleaning, new fluids, 3-phase power accomodation, Fix/replace DRO etc..). This helps a lot with the basics. I really like your description of the various tool profiles and the chips they produce when the DOC gets small. Initial process is a bit like woodworking where we use a jointer to make the reference surface then the planer guarantees thickness.

Once you have a side ground, you can tap it down lightly on the mag chuck with a softer metal tapper. You do this after the magnet is on. This is really paranoia speaking, but it makes sure the part is down. I agree with the two thousandths maximum for manual grinders like that. Any more and it’s super easy to get burn marks.

Zipper tooling must be difficult. Lots of carbide and some visual grinding i assume. There was a shop in Indianapolis called Gentry tool that made zipper tooling. Before i started working but 2 of my former employers worked there and a few other local shop owners worked there.

Marc, the problem with videos like this is that now I'll have to go get a surface grinder. ;) I've watched grinders being used in industry, but have never operated one myself. When I eventually get a surface grinder in my home shop, I'll certainly be reviewing this video series!

Why don't you just use vinegar to remove heat scale? It takes some time but it works wonders on raw steel. It seems like it would take a long time to remove the scale. [I'm a noob so I dont' now how thick that scale is, though]
