Surface Laptop Go Unboxing & Comprehensive Review

I've got three Surface Laptop Go's to demo, unbox and review from someone who has used it extensively along with other Thinkpads, Surface Pros, Surface Laptops and iPad Pros.

I've been using the laptop surface go I5 128gbs version for a month, the battery is not the best, real world use will be around 6 - 7 hours. When you have multiple tabs and a couple of application open while charging, the fans will be very audible, not the most silent when on charge in the library. The screen resolution is very low for a 12.4 inch screen, you can tell with small text when using word, it also does not get that bright. the speakers are also not the best. There is also no keyboard lighting and there's is a very subtle static sound coming from either the fans or speaker, located just under the keyboard. But surprisingly its not bad I actually like the laptop for its weight, size, design, usable for uni work.

Thanks for asking! For recording: Canon 80D with a 24mm lens and a Rode Videomic. For editing: Adobe Premiere Pro. Lighting: 2 soft boxes, 1 18-inch ring light, backdrop with frame (not used in this video really) - all from LimoStudio on Amazon.com. If I have to do a voiceover, I use the Samson desktop USB mic with a pop filter. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have more questions!

I'd like one of these, but would need external monitor support. Does no thunderbolt support mean that you can't connect it to an external monitor?

You'd still be able to connect an external monitor. I purchased a $10 hdmi to USB-C cable from Amazon and it's worked with no hiccups for monitors and TVs. The thunderbolt would only affect data transfer for the most part and that's if you're transferring at least 10 Gbs of data back and forth constantly or need 10W of charge.

Do you need a controller for minecraft and other games like that. For that laptop?

You don't need to use a controller but if you prefer to use keyboard and mouse, that's okay too.

How is the battery life on it? Can it reach 10 hours? And how did you find the screen?

Battery life is realistically 10-11 hours when the battery mode is at recommended. However, if you're watching TV episodes in HD quality, it'd last you 4 episodes while on high performance. For note-taking, emails, online courses or web browsing on recommended battery mode then you'll get the estimated 13.5 hours.

I just pre ordered it! The one with 128 GB. The part of chrome and s-mode was not clear to me. Is it a big disadvantage?

Hope you like it! I do prefer Edge over Chrome because there are less processes running in the background so you save on battery. It comes in S mode which means you can only download apps from the Windows Store app. If you want to download anything outside of that, you would have to go to Start, type in s mode and you can change out of it. Just know that once you change out of s mode, you cant undo it. I hope this helps!

My first ever Surface was the original Surface Pro when I was in undergrad. Then I got a Surface Pro 3 a month into undergrad and I used it after graduation for another year before getting my ThinkPad X1 Yoga. Both Surfaces were 128GB and I don't think I ever had any problems as a student. Utilize the cloud and you'll have less to worry about over time.

How is the screen resolution? Does it look pixelated when reading or writing some code?

Screen resolution looks bad on paper being 1,536 x 1,024 at but as far as reading (I read very tiny print), watching videos and editing, no pixelation.

Depends on the program you're using but I highly recommend getting the 8GB 128GB version if you're gonna edit using the Windows Photo app. If you're trying to use Adobe Premiere Pro or something, I'd recommend a Surface Laptop or Surface Pro with at least 16GB of RAM.

I checked the hardware specs against the Laptop Go and here's what I found: 1) If you plan to run it on bare minimum graphics, then any of the Laptop Go models will work. 2) If you want it to run on the recommended graphics, then I highly recommend you get at least the 8GB models so you have enough RAM to run Universe Sandbox 2 and other programs in the background.
