For beginner surfboard hand shapers it can be hard to take away that extra foam in the nose and tail of your first surfboards. In this short DIY or " HOW TO " video i'll attempt to show how you can concentrate more of your time on the ends of your surfboard to get a nice foil. Plus the tools you can use.
This video is the start of some amateur surfboard shaping tips I hope will help the newer people. I will work through majority of surfboard shaping and glassing so please leave a comment on what you need help with and would like to see me video.

Too much foam/thickness in the tail? I feel personally attacked. Good video and tips 🤙
@Shrednaught

Haha I’d never attack anyone personally.. Sometimes you want more foam in either nose or tail. Sometimes not. This time was not.

@@Shrednaught Super nice videos and amazing boards I am becoming a big fan of yours! In your opinion what is the difference between a thick and thin (nose / tail) a part from aesthetics. I am an amateur in the world of building surfboards but I have found that a bigger tail gives me more push during the paddle. What is your opinion regarding thickness of the tail and nose? Keep the good work!

Great insight into your methods. And thanks for a rundown of your tools, would love to see how you'd integrate modern shaping into an older style of shape; like a twinnie or single fin. I checked out @Matthew Bettinaglio loved it! Hope you had some waves yourself over winter. Cheers.

How do you gauge the thickness of the tail to leave room for the fin boxes?

looks good man! I'm planning on shaping a pig longboard, any tips on longboard rails, nose, tail?
@Shrednaught
@Shrednaught Жыл бұрын
Not a longboard expert by any stretch mate.. but I’d say 50/50 rails and a bit more foam in the nose if you wanna get up front and try nose ride.

Shrednaught, i have a question for you. I have a shape i want to put in foam. When choosing a blank do you want one close to the final dimensions? I heard if you take to much off the blank it gets spongey, is this true
@Shrednaught
@Shrednaught Жыл бұрын
You’re 100% correct. You should be choosing a close tolerance blank. This not only saves time but helps the final strength of the board. When taking foam away to get your thickness you should take it from the bottom of the blank/board and then just a shallow skim off the top. Reason being is that the deeper you go the softer the foam gets. So just a shallow skim off the top produces a stronger deck 🤙

What grits of sand do you use for each step?
@Shrednaught
@Shrednaught Жыл бұрын
It depends on how far I wanna take it. But a usual sanded finish will be 80 grit in prep and then 120-240-320 finish
