I only come here when it's 2-3ish feet, and I've never had a lifeguard come up to me, but I have mad respect for these guys. They're constantly making sure everyone's safe, and I've witnessed firsthand the effort they put into preventing accidents.

I'm a 60 yr. old bald white guy and awhile back I went to Sandy's for the first time in about 30 years. It was perfect 5' green barrels just like the old days when I used to ride there all the time. I was just riding around the island as a tourist with my mom and kid, and didn't have any swim fins but just wanted to run out there and do some body whomping for about 10 minutes. So as I'm running across the sand I hear "HEY, HEY" turn to look and it's a Lifeguard running to me. He say's" hey bradda I don't know if you realize those are some big waves and they are very dangerous"! I told him, yeah I know I was a pro bodyboarder and used to compete at Pipe. He say's "ah, it's cool, you got this bradda" and turned away to let me play. I was laughing when I got out in the water but he did exactly the right thing. I see people complaining about racial profiling here but it makes perfect sense. And as soon as he realized I wasn't some idiot that was gonna get drilled, he immediately backed off.

No one cares where you surf joe. We get guys that bodysurf there their entire lives but still get fucked up. Point is, know your limits. We have tons of guys saying they do this and that but still run into trouble. I'm glad you went home in one piece.

@@kainoa7585 Absolutely correct. A close friend (ex Pro Bodyboarder) I'd bet you know, who has rode there for over 30 years got hurt badly there last year, it happens to anybody! People go there and the local rippers make it look easy, so they don't realize the risk. Aloha

I’ve been bodysurfing Sandy’s since I was 7. I’m now 28 and I will say I hear every single day I’m out, the lifeguards come on the speakers to warn unfamiliar people about these waters. Some heed the warnings and some don’t. They’re giving them to you for reason.
@cami8D
@cami8D 3 жыл бұрын
Can I ask you something since you're a Sandy's bodyboarder? I'm wondering why you guys surf those risky shorebreak waves instead of surfing at deep sea where possible wipe outs will drag you to the water which, for someone who can swim, is way safer than hitting your head/neck on the sand? I mean, why bodyboard is considered a "shorebreak surf"? Sorry if it's a dumb question. Also I'm not a native english speaker but I hope you understand me :)
@hawaiianseaturtle009
@hawaiianseaturtle009 3 жыл бұрын
@@cami8D For there to be deep water break, there has to be a big enough swell for waves to form and break, which isn’t going to be happening all the time. On those days when we are just craving to get our gills wet, good shorebreak like Sandy’s is almost always breaking whether it’s good or not. There are also other benefits to it. Sandy’s and other shorebreak, most of the time, have a lot of incredibly strong rip current. This makes for good cardio training for when those big days at deep water breaks do come. Some people love the thrill of having to swim very hard and fast to make it into waves at big shorebreak. It’s definitely a huge way to improve mental toughness because large shorebreak is (in my opinion) some of the scariest waves to catch because of what you said in getting slammed on the sand even if you make good barrels and sections. Another benefit is it teaches you how to “land flat” and help prevent from getting injured on the slam. It’s definitely scarier than deep water break to me personally but all these other benefits are just training for the big swell seasons 🤙🏼

"Nobody just shows up straight to Sandy's" man are you wrong lol. First time my 3 yr old son and I've been to a beach was Sandy Beach. I didn't know about the dangers till I got hit with a wave. Because I grew up playing football I knew how to break my falls. My wife kept my son on the very edge where the water would just hit his knees. Lifeguards did a great job and warned us when the breaks were going to get worse. If you ever go to Oahu, Sandy Beach is a must. Located close to the world famous Waikiki Beach.

A buddy of mine blew his shoulder out at Sandy Beach the 2nd day after he arrived on Oahu. Literally 30 minutes after hitting the beach. Long story short, he got medically discharged from the navy because of it. . Sandy is no joke. I consider myself a very strong swimmer but without a fin you can get sucked over in front of the rocks, I came really close to getting rescued but managed to swim out of danger. You learn really quick that you better respect Mother Nature!

These guys deserve a trophy!. Knowing one limitations would save these guys a lot of hassle and your self from a disaster. It looked shallow and the images show the water current draws you out into being smashed by the wave. I would love to travel to this place the sentry is awesome not to swim here though. Broken backs and necks people must be thrown on the sand bed ground, lucky they be alive and not drowned to add to injury.. People need to be honest if your not the best swimmer best not not test limits.

Sandy Beach… not just being a strong swimmer… but water awareness, don’t turn your back, how you *_feel_* the swell & react to it, where you position yourself, whether your body fights the ride or goes for a ride with Mother Nature, whether you gasp for air after immediately surfacing and breath sea foam or wait a couple extra seconds, etc., etc. A pool can make a strong swimmer, but that’s not enough here.

Nov 2014 , was one of my best weeks of riding in Oahu at that point, catching great barrels all day in perfect sunlight and crystal water. I pulled into a nice one at Gas Chambers and tried a rollo at the end, not realizing how close to shore I had travelled. I got pulled over and drilled head down into the bedrock sand, completely flattening out from my neck to my shoulder with the full force of the wave. "POP" underwater, that didnt sound good! i jumped up and my collar bone was pushing up through my rashgaurd :( Immediately thankful it didnt break my neck. Thank you Ocean Safety for letting me hang out while I waited for a ride to Queens Med. They told me it was dislocated to keep me calm and it worked- they are not allowed to treat that stuff and a good thing they didnt touch me too. Shattered clavicle, surgery, plate installed, two months out of work and a full year of physical therapy and gym to get back to near normal...Took me a year to ride a Sandys again, I will always have massive respect for the one of the best beaches on the planet for riding. Mahalo for every day.

Why did they choose the flattest time of day to film this? Wish they had filmed this at 5:00 pm. Sandy's waves consistently rise late in the afternoon. Sandy's at 10 am vs 4:30 pm are as different as Pipeline in June Vs Pipeline in January. I surfed here for 12 years, went to Kaiser HS, lived in Kalama Valley.
